Partner with the Division of Health and Wellness and assigned school to provide mental health support to target groups of students who are at an elevated risk of suicide for a number of factors.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Reduce the time a student is away from their home school,
  • Increase the number of students who are connected to mental health supports, and
  • Reduce the likelihood that a student will be placed outside their home school again for the same reason.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Support students receiving educational services outside their assigned school (i.e. alternative placement due to code of conduct violation, intensive mental health support in the community, and extended homebound services due to mental health concerns).

This position is at East High School and is 37.5 hours per week/11 months per year.

The Chemical Dependency Prevention Counselor is responsible for providing school-based crisis intervention, prevention counseling (individual, family and group) and case management services to youth. The Counselor provides support for problem solving as well as information and referral services. S/he is responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments with the student that may identify any issues related to substance use/abuse, problem gambling and other risk factors that inhibit healthy youth development. SCOPE OF ROLE

Reporting to the Supervisor, BH Services the Counselor, School Based will provide an array of services to support school students and staff. These services may include education, consultation/training, prevention, crisis intervention and ongoing treatment.   • Maintain client charting in accordance with Medicaid, JCAHO, ODADAS, ODMH, CARF and professional standards. All documentation will be entered into the agency Electronic Medical Record.
  • Maintain clear communication with referral sources or designated liaison individuals in the school and community.
  • Assist in community outreach.
  • Reach out and engage parents, providing assistance in implementing effective parenting interventions.
  • Act as an advocate/liaison for client and parents with school and other community partners/agencies
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain all aspects of HIPAA, promoting patient confidentiality and right to privacy.
  • May be required to perform telehealth services as determined by school, family preference and Signature Health protocols.
  • Adherence and completion of compliance training provided by Signature Health.

The program operates year-round during the Academic Year (fall and spring) and Summer Sessions (July-Mid August). Fall and Spring Sessions are Monday thru Thursday (Occasional Fridays) from 8:00 am until 2:00pm and/or 3:00pm until 5:00pm. Saturday Sessions are 20 sessions during the Academic Year from 8:00 am to 3:00 p.m. Note: Academic Year weekday school hours are adjusted as needed per school. Summer Session is currently up to six (6) weeks, Monday thru Thursday, from 8:30am until 3:00 pm with occasional Saturday events.

Essential Functions:
-Conducts group dynamics sessions of a minimum of twice per semester at their school in collaboration with mentors on subjects outlined in the Personal Education Plan (PEP) document. The session must be properly recorded as directed by the program.
-Collects and submits any information (report cards, standardized tests, subsidized lunch, etc.) as requested by the program.
-Communicates any policy changes that may impact services being offered to the students at their school.
-Provides scope and sequence and lesson plans for group dynamic sessions as prescribed by the student Personal Education Plan (PEP) document.
-Be responsible for completing and reviewing PEPs with program participants.
-Illicit parental support through general and/or specific informative correspondence.
-Assists in the recruitment of prospective students.
-Maintains strong relationships with target schools.
-Collects and prepare all data requested by funding agent/director of the program.
-Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Functions:
-Establishes and follows through on a systematic course of action for self or others to assure accomplishment of a specific objective.
-Determines priorities and allocates time and resources effectively producing desired results at the level expected for the position.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
-A Bachelor's degree is required
-Work experience with urban youth preferred.
-Familiarity with students from NJGU/CB target schools would be helpful.
-School-based counselor must have access to target schools, i.e., current target school teacher or counselor. Current target school list includes the following Newark Board of Education Schools: Barringer High School, Central High School, East Side High School, Weequahic High School, Belmont Runyon, Hawkins Street School, Lafayette Street School, Rafael Hernandez School, Ridge Street School, Sussex Avenue School, and Wilson Avenue School.
-School-based counselor could also assist with non-target schools students as needed.
-At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
-School counseling or teaching Certificate in counseling preferred.

Salary Information:
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate for this position is $40.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.

School Based LPN / RN Key Responsibilities
  • Direct Nursing Services: Provide first aid, illness treatment, and emergency care to students and staff in accordance with professional standards, school policies, and state mandates.

  • Health Assessments: Conduct health screenings and assessments to identify health problems that may impact student learning and development.

  • IEP & 504 Plan Support: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement health-related goals and accommodations for students with disabilities as outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans.

  • Medication Management: Develop and oversee medication protocols, ensuring safe storage, administration, documentation, and monitoring of medications given at school.

  • Health Education & Counseling: Provide health education and counseling to students, staff, and families on various health topics, including chronic conditions, nutrition, and mental health.

  • Crisis Intervention: Respond to school crises, such as medical emergencies, traumatic events, or deaths, providing immediate support and coordinating with appropriate personnel.

  • Compliance & Documentation: Maintain accurate and confidential health records, ensuring compliance with state and federal health regulations and school policies.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with school administrators, teachers, and parents to enhance cooperative action, meeting the health and safety needs of students.


Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.

  • Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of Missouri.

  • Certification: Certification as a school nurse (Type 73) through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.

  • Experience: Previous experience in a school setting is preferred.

  • Skills: Strong communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.

  • Additional Requirements: CPR certification and the ability to pass a criminal background check.


Physical Demands
  • Environment: Occasional exposure to typical school conditions, including dust, noise, and changing environments.

  • Activity: Frequent standing, walking, and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Sensory: Ability to perform essential job functions with or without assistive devices or accommodations, including in moderate to high noise environments.
