ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Guidance Curriculum
- Plan, organize, implement, and deliver structured group lessons according to the district's guidance curriculum to improve students' interpersonal and intrapersonal effectiveness, personal health and safety, post-secondary planning and readiness, and other developmental needs.

- Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents or guardians, and district staff.
- Teach the school guidance curriculum components using effective instructional strategies and planned structured groups considering diverse student populations and needs for differentiated instruction.

- Use accepted theories and effective techniques of developmental guidance to respond to problematic or critical incidents to support students and offer services in time of need.
- Use preventive activities to remove barriers that interfere with a student's educational, career, personal, and social development.
- Implement remediation practices to assist students in coping with problem situations or unwise choices. Identify precipitating and antecedent factors, effective and ineffective approaches to dealing with the circumstances, and provide feedback to guide future decisions.
- Use specialized skills to support students in crisis situations requiring an immediate response. Maintain a healthy and safe school environment by collaborating with district staff, parents or guardians, and local officials.
- Provide continued support to students in need through individual counseling, small group counseling, consultation, or referral to services outside the school or district.
- Serve as an impartial, non-reporting resource for interpersonal conflicts and discourse involving two or more students, including accusations of bullying.
- Create school counseling services that are developmental and age-appropriate and provide information or literature that highlights related topics to students, teachers, and administrators.
- Assist individual students and their parents or guardians in monitoring their academic, career, personal, and social development as they progress in school.

Responsibilities
ICS seeks a School Counsel to assist, support and cultivate a strong school culture anchored in social emotional and academic support. Serving as the child's in-house advocate, the counselor's main role is to identify and support every child's academic, social-emotional and behavioral needs both in and outside the school environment. This is done through many avenues and consulting with key players in a student's learning process: family unit, teachers, school administrators and outside mental health professionals to create a safe, positive, and supportive environment for the student. As part of the Behavior Intervention Team (BIT), the Behavior Interventionist position assists HVED member districts and HVED programs in implementing a continuum of social and emotional learning (SEL) support, to address behaviors specifically for students requiring intensive, highly individualized intervention. This position provides collaboration, consultation, and direct support, on specific student cases and overall programming, creates and facilitates high-quality professional learning opportunities for member district and HVED program staff, and assists in the coordination of service delivery to ensure students are receiving effective SEL instruction designed to meet their needs in their least restrictive environment.
Qualifications:
- The Education District requires an applicant to have a PELSB License, preferably in one or more of the following areas of licensure:
- Licensed Special Education Teacher, preferably in Emotional or Behavior Disorders (EBD), Licensed School Psychologist, Licensed School Counselor, Board Certification Behavior Analyst (BCBA), School Social Worker, or School Counselor.
- Experience in child behavior and intervention experience required.

Hiawatha Valley Education District (HVED) provides special education services to 12 School Districts and three Charter Schools within five counties of southeast Minnesota: Fillmore, Houston, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona. HVED also has a Setting IV Behavior Program, S tudents A chieving I ntegrated S ervices (SAIL) that provides programming for students in grades K-12 with challenging behaviors currently receiving special education services.
