Research Title:
Staff Scientist
The work will entail:
Serve as molecular and cell biologist leading projects for the NIST Genome Editing Program . Support leading the NIST Genome Editing Program working with the genome editing team and engaging with stakeholders to develop and characterize measurement methods, control materials, and data analysis approaches towards qualification of genome edited samples.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Lead, plan, and conduct research towards characterizing assays and reagents, developing genomic measurements, documentary standards, control datasets, and control materials for the field of genome editing as part of the NIST Genome Editing Program.
- Lead development of wet-lab procedures for new quantitative measurements of geome editing execution and editing outcomes in various mammalian cell sysems
- Engage stakeholders to and identify opportunities for assay development, assay qulification, control material development, and standards development.
- Keep accurate and organized electronic records
- Organize and present results of the work in the form of reports, manuscripts, and oral presentations
§ A minimum of a Master's degree in Computer Science, Biology, Microbiology or a related field.
§ 2 years of relevant experience.
§ Proficiency in molecular biology, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, DNA handling/assays, PCR, RNA handling, mammalian cell culture, DNA isolation, gel electrophoresis, Illumina NGS seqeuncing
§ Experience leading independent projects or teams

Research Title:
Biointerface Metrology for CMOS Sensors
The work will entail:
The project encompasses the development of new measurement metrology capabilities to characterize biological films attached to semiconductor substrates. The measurements will allow the development of more robust semiconductor biosensors for applications in the life sciences. The project requires close collaboration with material scientists and theorists at NIST, as well as external stakeholders to transfer NIST measurements to industry . The project will meet critical milestones in the bioelectronic sensing project and support the CHIPS metrology program.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Utilize surface functionalization techniques such as thiol or silane chemistry to develop robust biotic-abiotic interfaces.
- The design, assembly and characterization of function of biotic-abiotic interfaces using biomolecules such as DNA or proteins.
- Perform tasks related to design of experiments and test fixtures to support surface functionalization experiments.
- Plan and perform measurements of samples from stakeholders that deposit biotic-abiotic interfaces using vapor deposition.
- Data analysis with MATLAB, Mathematica, or similar software of the raw sensor data to extract features and information indicative of biomarker detection and characterization.
- Present results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
- Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been properly archived.
§ A PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
§ At least 6 years of relevant experience with biological materials such as DNA.
§ At least 3 years of relevant experience with surface science and surface characterization techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) or cyclic voltammetry (CV).
§ Familiarity with electronic measurements and instrumentation

The work will entail:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is building a library of sector-specific scenarios to facilitate AI evaluations and measurements. These scenarios are grounded in real-world AI use cases and developed with input from the broader AI community and sector stakeholders. Well-defined key elements of scenarios will ensure AI evaluations are both realistic and effective. The PREP candidate will be responsible for assisting in gathering, refining, and documenting the AI scenario collection and generation process. The candidate will actively participate in NIST measurement science and be involved in human-centered research and evaluations of AI technologies .
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
+ Developing and conducting methods (e.g., interviews) to collect various AI use scenarios within an organization.
+ Replicating AI use scenario collection methods with various stakeholders.
+ Analyzing collected data using appropriate methods (e.g., qualitative coding, thematic analysis).
§ Refining and documenting the AI scenario collection and generation process for replicability and efficient scenario library development.
§ Presenting results at internal meetings and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
§ Ensuring that results, protocols, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.
§ Background in any of the following or comparable fields: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Human Factors/Engineering Psychology, Psychometrics, Economics, Computer Science
§ Education level: graduate student.
§ Strong background in research methodology with demonstrated research experience.
§ Competency in quantitative and/or qualitative research and data analysis.
§ Knowledge/interest in human-computer interaction and human-AI interaction.
§ Knowledge/interest in machine learning and AI test and evaluation.
§ Ability to work both in teams and independently.
§ Strong oral and written communication skills.
Number of Positions and hours/week
§ 1 position, graduate student, half-time at 20 hours/week
§ The details of the work arrangement are negotiable, but the position is envisioned to be telework, with the possibility of occasional in-person meetings on the NIST Gaithersburg campus.

The work will entail:
We are seeking to hire a biomedical engineer to be stationed at the NIST Gaithersburg Campus located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, close to Washington DC. The person hired for this position will provide technical support for executing cell-based experiments on laboratory automation systems. The person will be familiar with measurements methods for testing and experiment with biological cells. The person will also develop high-quality test methods through design-of-experiment techniques and sources of variability analysis with the use of automated instrumentation.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
§ Perform biological assays (i.e. cell viability, antibody staining, flow cytometry, microscopy, fluorescence, absorbance) in a laboratory.
§ Assay plate design for automation systems.
§ Assay protocol adaptation to automation system control software (i.e. programming with Hamilton Venus)
§ Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers for design-of-experiment approaches for instrument performance analysis
§ Evaluation of replicate performance datasets in collaboration with NIST statisticians
§ Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences and workshops.
§ Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in physics, engineering, biomedical engineering, biology or minimum 5-years experience in biotechnology related industry.
§ Experience with programming and using automation systems in the laboratory environment

Conduct research comparing models of received aggregate radio frequency (RF) emissions from 4G and 5G cellular deployments. Examine the effects of different path loss and clutter models on individual emitter contributions and aggregate emission calculations. Compare model predictions to field measurements from ongoing NIST projects.

+ Develop and implement algorithms and models for aggregate RF emissions using Python and/or MATLAB.
