Surgical Technician/Scrub Tech

Schedule: this is a full-time, 40-hour/week position that typically works Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day, based on scheduled cases for the day.1 in 4 call and 1 in 4 weekends is required. They do approximately 2500 cases/year.

How you'll contribute

A Surgical Technician/Scrub Tech who excels in this role:

• Assists surgical team during the surgical procedure(s). Understands the procedures being performed and can anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during procedure. Transports to decontamination room upon completion of the surgical procedure.

• Prepares and maintains equipment and surgical instruments in the OR suite and ensures their proper set-up. Responsible for all instruments, maintaining them in good working order, and assuring the availability of needed instruments to do all surgical cases.

• Maintains sterile field and counts all instruments, sponges, needles etc. needed for each case. Has necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during operative procedures.

• Cleans, assembles, and prepares instruments, equipment, and supplies for sterilization when needed. Follows proper sterilization processes. Participates in testing and recording of all Biotesting for the sterilizers and autoclaves in the department as needed.

The Scrub Tech performs various duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure a safe and successful operative procedure. This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management.

It is expected that the Scrub Tech will support system wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices. In addition, this person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined.

SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Serves as scrub person for basic surgical procedures and participates in complex surgical procedures as needed.
• Follows department procedures for scrub persons by assembling surgical packs, supplies and instruments for surgical cases and preparing operating room for surgery.
• Inspects instruments and power equipment prior to use to assure operational order and troubleshoots, reports, and removes faulty instrument and equipment from service.
• Assures adequate amount of appropriate supplies and instrumentation are available in accordance with surgeon’s preference and counts all instruments, needles, and sponges with registered nurse according to procedure.
• Inventories and monitors instruments, sponges and needles on operative field using department count procedures.
• Adjusts instrumentation and supplies to changes in procedures and patient condition.
• Assists with monitoring and reporting blood and fluid loss during cases.
• Ascertains correctness of count prior to closure of body cavities and surgical wound. assist circulating nurse with restocking the room at end of shift.
• Anticipates surgeon’s needs and assists surgeon by draping patients, holding/passing instruments, retractors, sutures, and medications, applying surgical dressings, suctioning and sponging surgical wounds, holding extremities, and moving patients.
• Recognizes and reports emergency situations.
• Adjusts priorities and participates in resolving problems as appropriate.
• Assists in identification, labeling and proper specimen disposition using departmental procedures.
• Performs or assists in sterile preps as needed/requested by monitoring aseptic techniques of surgical team members at field, reporting and correcting breaks in sterile technique immediately, and controlling location of contaminated instruments and supplies.
• Maintains appropriate quantities of surgical supplies and equipment by restocking room with necessary equipment and supplies and apprises supervisor of special requests for surgical supplies and equipment.
• Assists with decontamination of all equipment, instruments, and supplies as necessary and assists with cleaning rooms, furniture, and equipment according to established procedures

• Associate’s degree in surgical technology from accredited school or two (2) years of experience in a directly related area
• Valid state Surgical Technologist license
• Current BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification

Assists the delivery team by acting as the scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures. Maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field. Responsible for stocking supplies, acts as courier for the department; and assists with A.M. care as needed. HS Diploma/GED; graduated from a Surgical Technician program is preferred. Previous clinical experience is preferred. Must have BLS/CPR by the American Heart Association.

• Prepares operating room for surgery, including gathering equipment and supplies, ensuring the operating room is in working order and sterilized for surgery

• Knows instrumentation, has ability to anticipate surgeon's needs by observing and concentrating quietly during operative procedure.

Job Title: Radiologic/Scrub Tech Department: Operations

The technologist assists physicians in performing diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures by preparing the patient and operating the x-ray equipment in order to obtain diagnostic images.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Monitors and assists patients before, during and after procedures to include proper positioning, prep and drape.
• Able to scrub and circulate in various IR areas for multiple procedure types.
• Turns over and prepares rooms using aseptic technique between patients, assures all equipment and supplies are readily available for procedures.
• Flexible team player comfortable with a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing.
• Knowledge of arterial and venous anatomy as it pertains to interventional procedures.

• Active and unrestricted RT license in the state of Virginia, if applicable (for RT position, not required for Scrub Tech).
• Minimum 1 year clinical experience. Interventional Radiology experience preferred.
• ARRT or equivalent (for RT position, not required for Scrub Tech)
• Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the job. These include, but are not limited to, sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting, pulling, moving patients/objects > 50 pounds, and repetitive motions.
• Ability to multitask, prioritizes effectively, and works as part of a team.
