Our client, a prestigious cultural institution in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US , is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Lead Curatorial Assistant to support our curatorial department. This role is critical in the management and presentation of our diverse art collections. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the arts, a strong background in art history, and exceptional administrative and research skills. This position requires a dedicated individual committed to preserving and promoting artistic heritage.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist curators with research, exhibition planning, and object handling for current and future exhibitions.
  • Manage and maintain the integrity of the permanent collection database, including cataloging, condition reporting, and accessioning new acquisitions.
  • Coordinate logistics for loans, including shipping, insurance, and condition reports for incoming and outgoing objects.
  • Prepare exhibition-related materials, such as label copy, catalogue entries, and interpretive texts.
  • Support the organization and execution of curatorial department events, lectures, and public programs.
  • Facilitate communication between the curatorial department and other museum departments, including registrars, conservators, educators, and marketing.
  • Conduct provenance research and assist with copyright and image clearance for publications and digital platforms.
  • Oversee the work of intern and volunteer staff assisting the curatorial team.
  • Manage departmental budgets and process invoices and reimbursements.
  • Ensure adherence to museum policies and best practices in collections care and management.

Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Art History, Museum Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience working in a museum curatorial department or gallery setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of art history, preferably with specialization in a relevant area.
  • Proficiency in museum collection management software (e.g., TMS, PastPerfect).
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience with handling works of art and understanding of conservation principles.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be available to work on-site in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US .

Job Description Summary
The John J. Willaman & Martha Haas Valentine Curatorial Assistant provides essential support to the curatorial staff in the documentation and management of the living plant collections, as well as in facilitating scholarly and public use of these resources. Primary responsibilities include annual inventory of the collections, accessioning and deaccessioning, plant health assessments, mapping, and labeling. The position also entails data entry and management within the collections database, along with the preparation of maps and interpretive materials for researchers and visitors.
Training will be provided in the use of the institution's collections management software and GIS applications. Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong woody plant identification skills and a working knowledge of database systems.
Job Description
Responsibilities
+ Work with curatorial staff to document, evaluate and inventory living collections.
+ Create and distribute plant labels.
+ Perform database entry and GIS mapping.
+ Assist research staff and visiting researchers.
+ Create/update/place interpretive materials related to the living collections.
+ Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
+ High School Grad/GE Degree and 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required; bachelor's degree strongly preferred.
+ Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
+ Knowledge of typical office computer programs including Excel, file sharing programs, GIS and relational databases, preferred.
