The Roles Available
General Motors has needs for qualified Skilled Trades Journeypersons and Journeypersons in Training. We are seeking Electricians, Pipefitters, Millwrights, and Toolmakers. These roles will be working under minimal supervision executing the primary responsibilities of the role.
Electrician Primary Responsibilities:
- Follow established safety procedures according to OSHA standards and company procedures
- Layout, installation, repair, and preventative maintenance of complicated electrical equipment and circuits
- Analyze and troubleshoot electrical malfunctions in equipment and related components, diagnosing and correcting the problems quickly to avoid production delays
- Perform electrical preventative and corrective maintenance on all plant equipment
- Promote teamwork and show a willingness to work with other departments
- Participate in continuous improvement activities
- Read and interpret drawings and wiring schematics
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills
Mechanical Trades (Pipefitter, Millwright, Toolmaker) Primary Responsibilities:
- Follow established safety procedures according to OSHA standards and company procedures
- Maintain, dismantle, repair, and replace mechanical and hydraulic components (e. g. bearings, seals, details, carriers, etc.) on industrial machinery such as shafting, motors, generators, air compressors, engines, pumps, cylinders, gears, couplings, linkages, ball screws, high speed CNC spindles, coolant systems and filters, and combustion equipment and valves
- Layout, assemble, fabricate, maintain, and repair piping systems
- Use various hand or power tools for measuring, cutting, threading, grooving, bending, soldering, assembling, joining, and installing pipes, valves, and fittings
- Read and interpret blueprints for the mechanical operation and assembly of conveyor systems, material handling systems, robots, and other automation
- Operate mobile equipment (e.g. forklifts, vertical lifts, cranes)
- Determine loading requirements to rig equipment and material for lifting
- Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
- Fabricate punches, tools, steel rule tools and t-sets to exact specifications
- Plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools or assemblies using blueprints, sketches, or models
- Determine quality of finished products, ensuring defect-free parts, by verifying dimensions, alignment, and clearances for conformance to specifications using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators
Minimum Qualifications:
- Electrician : At least six (6) years of related experience as an Electrician or a U.S. Department of Labor Certificate of Completion in the Electrical trade.
- Mechanical Trades: U.S. Department of Labor Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate in Mechanical trade (millwright, pipefitter, toolmaker, machine repair) or six (6) years of documented experience in a Mechanical trade
All Roles:
At least 18 years of age
- Eligible to work in the United States
- Must be willing to work flexible shift hours and day, afternoon, or night shift as well as overtime hours daily, weekends and holidays on those shifts with little notice
- Must be able to satisfactorily complete the General Motors hiring process requirements which includes comprehensive assessments, drug testing, and a background check
Preferred Qualifications:
Electrician
Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) such as RSLogix, Siemens, Rockwell, GE Fanuc, or Modicon
- Experience with industrial robotics systems, including platforms like Fanuc, ABB, or Rockwell
- Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and their integration into automated systems
Pipefitter
Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Experience with robot dress-out and end effectors, such as welding guns, spray guns, and suction cups
- Experience with fluid pumps, pneumatic pumps, and compressors
- Experience with planned maintenance systems and predictive technologies
- Experience with industrial robotics and automation
Millwright
Experience with Conveyance Systems
- Experience in Welding, including but not limited to TIG, MIG, and stick
- Experience with Mobile Equipment, including cranes, and forklifts
- Experience with planned maintenance systems and predictive technologies
- Experience with industrial robotics and automation
Toolmaker
Experience using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs)
- Experience with toolroom equipment, including Bridgeports, mills, lathes, and grinders
- Experience with tolerances and precision measurements
- Experience with planned maintenance systems and predictive maintenance technologies
- Experience with industrial robotics and automation systems
Physical Requirements
- Quick response to safety instructions, alarms, and signals are a must
- Ability to work and stand for extended periods
- Comfortably wear personal protective equipment
- Navigate a busy environment
- Bend, twist, kneel, crouch, and reach
- May need to lift or carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs. depending on department
- Occasional sitting during certain tasks
- Drive mobile equipment when needed
General Motors UAW hourly employment offers a very competitive compensation and benefit package. An annual incentive payout is also available, as qualified.
This position may be filled with a Journeyperson or Journeyperson In Training, the compensation ranges for a JIT include ($37.78-$4.08) or Journeyperson rate of 44.98. Certificates/credentials and scoring in interview will determine your status and pay.
Relocation and travel expenses will be the responsibility of the applicant.

- State of Michigan residential builder's license or completion of Detroit Carpentry Joint Apprentice School with journeyman card.

- Must demonstrate working knowledge of the carpentry trade pertaining to doors and hardware.
