This position is located at Cuivre River State Park at 678 State Route 147, Troy Missouri. Normal shift hours: 7:30 a.m.to 4:00 (1/2 hour lunch break). Shifts may vary with the time of year and in order to meet the needs of the facility. This position is required to work at minimum one weekend a month from April through October. Must also work varying shifts depending on holidays, emergencies, special events.

Responsibilities - What you'll do

  • This is skilled work in facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, and routine cleaning with emphasis on construction and repair of buildings at Cuivre River State Park.
  • Acting as lead, employee will lead or participate in construction projects or facility repairs including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting and masonry work. Diagnose, oversee or perform routine, technical and complex repairs to heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration systems. Research, estimate, acquire bids and/or purchase materials for specific projects or repairs as needed.
  • Perform, oversee and ensure completion of routine preventive maintenance and necessary repairs to vehicles, heavy equipment, tractors, ZTR mowers, pull-behind mowing decks, SUVs, golf carts, chainsaws, weed trimmers, push mowers and power tools. Monitor vehicle and equipment use to ensure safety protocols are followed and unit performance is optimal. Employee will assist in maintaining maintenance, training and safety meeting records, operation manuals and warranty papers.
  • Direct and perform grounds maintenance including mowing of all lawn areas according to the mowing plan and removal of debris according to park material management plan. Assist in inspecting tree resources. Identify and remove dangerous trees as prescribed in tree management policy. Conduct playground inspections. Identify and report risk management concerns. Respond to emergency needs when contacted.
  • Monitor operations of the water and wastewater systems. Perform testing, report problems and maintain records as required. Diagnose, oversee or perform routine, technical and complex repairs of lift stations, irrigation pumps, towers, pipes, drains, faucets all parts of the water/wastewater system.
  • Purchase operating supplies and parts as necessary. Become familiar with and follow all procurement rules and procedures. Monitor inventory and provide list of needs for central warehouse and MVE orders.
  • Assist with stewardship of resources, both natural and cultural. Participate in on-site controlled burns, invasive plant removal and other resource management related projects. Participate in off-site controlled burns at other parks to help meet Region or Statewide management goals.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of park rules, regulations, procedures and policies. Attend mandatory and other trainings to learn new or enhance existing skills. Communicate openly and effectively with the public, external stakeholders, supervisors and subordinates.
  • Performs other related work as assigned to further the Park, Division and Department goals.
Qualifications - All you need for success

This position may be required to obtain and maintain appropriate commercial operator's license, water/wastewater certifications, and/or other required licenses/certification. If required and if you do not currently possess this license/certification, you will be given six months to obtain necessary license/certification.

To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

  • Building and Construction: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings.
  • Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
  • Plumbing and Pipefitting: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to install, maintain, or repair pipelines, pipe systems, and fixtures, including water, air, steam, gas, chemicals, or sewage.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
  • Four to six years of on-the-job training in a variety of trade areas including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, concrete and masonry, painting, plastering, and mechanical repair. (Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education or experience)

  • Preferred Qualifications and Experience/Special Job Requirements
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license throughout employment
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical outdoor work, able to walk on uneven terrain for extended periods of time, able to perform duties in rugged terrain, lift and load 50-to-75-pound objects repeatedly, walk and work on roofs, operate equipment for extended timeframes such as mowers, tractors, trimmers and backpack blowers and climb ladders.
  • Must be able to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays dependent on the needs of the facility.
  • This position will be required to obtain Level 1 Prescribed Fire Training. If you do not have equivalent training, you will be given 12 months from the appointment date to obtain the necessary training. As a park employee you will perform routine duties and/or assist with controlled burns or wildfire.
