Assignment

This position is a part-time position as an Associate Instructor in Social Justice Studies. The teaching assignment may require teaching lecture-discussion courses during day, evening or on Saturday and/or in an on-line/distance education format. The assignments are as needed, during Spring, Summer, and/or Fall semesters. This position is represented by the West Valley-Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT/AFT Local 6554).

Work location: Mission College, Santa Clara, CA

Salary and Benefits

Salary is based on a percentage of workload, up to a maximum of 67% of a full-time load. Salary is prorated based on a minimum salary range of $36,191 - $52,297 per semester; and is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.

Minimum Qualifications

1.Education - Possess any one of the following:
  • Master's degree in Social Justice; OR
  • Master's degree in English, Ethnic Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, Sociology, Philosophy, Political Science, History, Economics, Criminal Justice/Public Safety AND upper division or graduate course work in at least one other constituent discipline as previously listed; OR
  • The equivalent of the above.

2. Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation for in-class or on-line/distance education activities, evaluation of students' work, consultation with students outside of class and/or on-line, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.
  • Submit, when due, attendance rosters and grade reports.
  • Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
  • Maintain office hours each week, at .5 hours per week per section.
  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members' area of expertise.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual

Lynn Walker Huntley Social Justice Fellowship
The Southern Education Foundation (SEF), located in Atlanta, Georgia with support from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), seeks applicants for the Lynn Walker Huntley Social Justice Fellowship, an early career, two-year position from Fall 2026 through Summer 2028 focused on education justice advocacy across the South. Since 1867, the mission of the Southern Education Foundation has been to advance equitable education practices and policies in the South through research, advocacy, and leadership development to help every student attain a high-quality education that propels them toward the opportunity-rich life they deserve.

The Fellow will assist SEFs Government Affairs and Advocacy team with developing and implementing strategies to advance education justice policies at the local, state, and federal levels. This includes focusing on advocating for equitable school funding and integration, defending, and strengthening public education programs, and/or school curriculum that reflects the diversity and injustices of Americas past and present. The Fellow will also support impact litigation in these areas as part of SPLCs Democracy: Education & Youth practice group, and as part of the legal team of Brown's Promise, a project sponsored by SEF.

Candidates should be able to organize and prioritize a varied workload to effectively complete multiple assignments, for multiple supervisors, and meet a range of deadlines. Interested candidates should be able to interact with diverse external audiences at varying levels in non-profit, education, and government relations spaces while effectively communicating and embodying the values, purpose, and mission of the organization.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Assist in impact litigation, including legal research, memos, and drafting motions; identifying and communicating with plaintiffs and pro bono counsel; coordinating amicus brief efforts; and planning community events and media outreach.
  • Research and writing policy briefs and advocacy materials; crafting strategic messaging to advance equity goals; drafting legislative
    testimony; advocating to legislators; serving on coalitions and collaborating with partner organizations.
  • Conducting equity and civil rights training for staff and community partners.
  • Research and suggest recommendations on new policy developments in education justice across K-12 and the post-secondary
    spectrum.
  • Create a final report or project demonstrating progress on a key civil rights issue in education that resulted from SEFs activity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience :

  • J.D. or will receive a J.D. by Spring 2026.
  • Excellent research, oral communication, writing, and analytical skills; ability to convey complex information to a variety of audiences; be willing and available to travel for business needs.
  • Demonstrate commitment to SEF, Browns Promise, and SPLCs missions, education justice, racial equity, and civil rights and liberties for all.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a diverse team; demonstrated ability to take initiative and to translate ideas into action.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
  • Applicants must have graduated from law school 2024 or later; judicial law clerks and members of law school journals are encouraged to apply, but clerkship or journal experience is not required.
  • Fellow will need to be admitted to practice in one of SEFs 17 states.*
  • Experience working both independently and in cooperation with other staff members while displaying a positive, cooperative attitude.
  • Exhibit sensitivity to and respect for differences in personal, professional, and business relationships on behalf of SEF, Browns Promise, and SPLC.
Compensation for this role is $90,000 along with a competitive benefits package. This is a full-time position working Monday Friday. SEF is currently working a hybrid schedule where employees work remotely and, in the office, based on the needs of the business.

Department Overview
The Director, Human Rights position can sit in our Chicago or Washington D.C. offices.
The Director of Human Rights will shape and advance McDonald's commitment to respect human rights across McDonald's restaurants, supply chain, and the company as part of the McDonald's Sustainability & Social Impact team within the Global Impact function. This role will lead the design and oversight of enterprise human rights strategies and governance outlining a multi-year vision for the business. The Director will report to the Senior Director of Social Impact and oversee the management of the Human Rights Manager. The Director will collaborate closely with key functional partners, such as Global Supply Chain, Global People, and Legal, markets, and external stakeholders to make sure that human rights is embedded into the business.
Responsibilities
+ Develop and lead McDonald's global human rights strategy and governance outlining a multi-year strategy, ensuring alignment with regulatory obligations, sustainability goals, and corporate values.
+ Oversee talent management of Human Rights Manager and drive capability building for internal teams to strengthen awareness, skills, and accountability for human rights.
+ Oversee management of cross-functional Human Rights Working Group, which governs the human rights management systems within functions and markets, and responsible for representing the group to senior leadership level, and shepherding key company policies and human rights management system improvements across the McDonald's System.
+ Represent McDonald's externally with NGOs, multi-stakeholder initiatives, government agencies, and industry peers to advance industry change on human rights.
+ Partner internally across functions (Supply Chain, Legal, People) to embed human rights priorities into business decisions.

Qualifications

-Respond to members of the general public in a professional and friendly demeanor who are calling CCHR's live call center by: screening calls and performing a preliminary assessment to determine whether a caller should be scheduled for an intake appointment at LEB; providing information including but not limited to site locations, phone numbers, and functions of the agency; and referring callers to appropriate additional services.
-Assist with community-based outreach about the NYCHRL and related issues to community groups, tenant groups, grass-root organizations, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, private entities, and governmental agencies. Meet with members of the public to perform a preliminary assessment of the individual's needs and/or claims of discrimination.
-Perform data entry, generate letters, and otherwise facilitate communication with members of the public making inquiries at CCHR.
-Enter/update/retrieve information on an electronic information storage system in order to facilitate agency operations.
-Maintain an organized, retrievable filing system.
-Provide day-to-day administrative support to the LEB, including reception duties, mail and correspondence, and docketing and service of complaints.
-Prepare and submit reports and forms in accordance with agency reporting requirements.
-Participate in training sessions to stay updated with the NYCHRL.
-Performs all duties as needed to advance the work of the LEB.

  • Prepares complete and thorough case plans as required by local, state, and federal government and prepares ongoing follow-up reports on each case assigned; monitors and adjusts case plans.
  • Provides case work services either individually or as part of an inter-agency team approach in the areas of family relationships, finances, parent-child relationships, domestic abuse, separation, juvenile delinquency, and other problems in accordance with the needs of the client.
  • Places children in substitute care settings; maintains ongoing supervision of placements through site visits and evaluates the social adjustment of the children; reports to court and participates in administrative review activities.
  • Provides case management to children with physical disabilities, mental health issues, and children in need of protective services, juvenile justice youth, and their families.
  • Provides oversight of youth subject to court orders to monitor community safety.
  • Provides emergency and ongoing services to families with the objective of preventing family breakup; provides services to reunite families.

Human Rights Specialist 1

The Human Rights Specialist 1 will serve as the No Hate NYS Regional Councils Program Manager and play a vital role in responding to individuals and communities impacted by hate and building external relationships for the Hate and Bias Prevention Unit (HBPU) within the Division of Human Rights. HBPU runs the No Hate NYS campaign and the campaign's mission is to combat prejudice and discrimination, serve as a resource for New Yorkers impacted by hate and bias incidents, and support communities in response to such incidents. The campaign focuses on public education, outreach efforts, and has established a hotline and online form for reporting hate and bias incidents. No Hate NYS campaign provides this coordinated and community-focused support through our state-wide Regional Councils, Response Team and Youth Initiatives.

Under the direction of the HBPU Assistant Deputy Commissioner, the Human Rights Specialist 1 would manage the work of the No Hate NYS campaign's 10 Regional Councils throughout New York State. The HRS 1 would work closely with our 10 regional councils to support them to fulfil their mission and action plans. As a Human Rights Specialist 1, you will:

  • Work closely with No Hate NYS campaign's 10 Regional Councils, supporting them to carry out hate and bias prevention activities in their regions.
  • Manage and refine the Regional Council's annual plan process to execute activities, meetings, and other special events, overseeing and approving the use of resources and financial planning.
  • Lead, in conjunction with HBPU team, statewide projects that are designated by HBPU that include the Regional Councils.
  • Monitor Regional Council's Action Plan goals; ensuring they are measured and achieved.
  • Work with the Assistant Deputy Commissioner to identify and provide relevant training for the Regional Councils.
  • Assist the Assistant Deputy Commissioner in the development of policy proposals and policy positions related to preventing and responding to hate and bias incidents in New York State.
  • Assist the HBPU team on the maintenance and expansion of our Hate & Bias Prevention Toolkit.
  • When needed, assist the Response Team, which will mobilize to support communities impacted by hate and bias incidents throughout the state.

Community Engagement and External Relations

  • Assist with marketing campaigns and other initiatives that raise the profile of No Hate NYS campaign within the community and proactively support the unit's mission.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with partners and other relevant community organizations, government agencies, and advocates.
  • Engage in community outreach to identify and assess possible hate and bias incidents as they occur.
  • Provide technical assistance or training on the work of HBPU and DHR to community organizations, DHR staff, and others.
  • Represent DHR and the Unit to the broader community of interested organizations, individuals, and other stakeholders.
  • Other related duties as they arise.

Minimum Qualifications

*This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

Seven years of experience in field investigation or law enforcement investigation and the preparation of detailed narrative reports; OR planning, developing, implementing, or enforcing a human rights, civil rights or housing and community development program, OR conducting discrimination or labor relations investigations, OR litigation, OR any combination of the above experience to equal seven years.

Substitution: An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor's in a related field degree can substitute for four years of experience; a master's degree in a related field can substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for six years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with community organizing or advocacy.

Experience in marketing and communications.

Demonstrated commitment to human rights.

Proven track record in event planning and community outreach.

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

The Women's Human Rights Coordination Group works closely with AIUSA staff to advance the global protection of women's human rights. The Coordination Group divides duties among the members of the group, and these include:

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitoring – The Co-group serves as key monitors and experts on women’s human rights. As such, members of the co-group are responsible for routinely monitoring the political and human rights situation concerning women’s rights and having a solid understanding of AI’s specific concerns pertaining to women’s rights.
  • Strategy building – The co-group is responsible, in collaboration with other volunteers and staff, for developing and implementing action strategies for AIUSA’s work in women’s human rights. The co-group participates in strategy development at international, section, and local levels. Such strategies may utilize an array of action forms including casework, campaigns, country or thematic projects, rapid or crisis responses. The co-group should be conversant in numerous tactics, which may include media engagement, US and foreign government advocacy, corporate engagement, shareholder activism, outreach to relevant professions, émigré groups or other stakeholders, and participation in coalitions or multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Campaigns and Crisis Response – The Co-group plays a key role in the development and implementation of relevant campaigns, including women’s human rights defenders and other individuals at risk. Their roles include crafting actions for the Women’s Human Rights Action Network as well as for members, supporters, and activists across the nation.
  • Women’s Human Rights Action Network – The Co-group supports a network of groups and individual members who carry out ongoing work related to women’s human rights. This Action Network is developed both within and outside our current activist base and is an opportunity to facilitate women’s human rights work and discussion and grow the movement.
  • Media and Social Media – The Co-group serves as official spokespersons for AIUSA concerning women’s human rights and responds to and initiates media coverage on women’s human rights. This includes both domestic and international print, TV, radio, and internet outlets. The co-group is responsible for maintaining the Women’s Rights pages on the AIUSA website and for crafting online actions. The co-group is also responsible for blogging and maintains a Facebook page and Twitter feed.
  • Working With Other Human Rights Organizations – The co-group seeks to develop and maintain contacts with their counterparts in other human rights organizations, solidarity groups or other stake-holders in women’s rights work.
  • General assistance to AIUSA members – The Co-group provides general assistance, information, and promotion of women’s human rights to AIUSA members seeking to work on women’s rights issues.

The Domestic Militarization Watch is a new initiative of PEP that tracks and exposes how military tactics, equipment, and federal forces are being deployed against communities within the United States. The Human Rights & Advocacy Fellow will focus on the human impacts of this trend—documenting civil liberties violations, racialized violence, and community resistance to militarized policing and surveillance.

This fellowship is ideal for students or emerging advocates passionate about civil rights, peacebuilding, or public policy , who want to transform research into meaningful advocacy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and document incidents of militarized policing, troop deployments, and immigration enforcement in U.S. cities.
  • Track and summarize human rights implications of these actions, including violations of protest rights and community targeting.
  • Conduct interviews or gather verified testimonies from affected individuals and organizations (with consent).
  • Draft human rights briefs, blog posts, and advocacy statements for publication on the PEP website and social media.
  • Collaborate with the Research Fellow and Executive Director to produce the Quarterly Militarization Report.
  • Support advocacy campaigns calling for demilitarization and the redirection of federal funds to social programs.
  • Attend biweekly meetings to share findings and coordinate with other fellows.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate, graduate student, or early-career professional in Human Rights, Political Science, Sociology, International Relations, Public Policy, Law, or related field.
  • Strong research, writing, and storytelling skills.
  • Understanding of civil rights, police accountability, or community justice movements.
