Specific Qualifications:

- Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and academic programs in education, social sciences, and related disciplines.

- Lead the development and execution of the School’s strategic plan, focusing on growth, academic quality, student engagement, and faculty development.
- Faculty and Staff Development:
- Support and mentor faculty members in their professional development, including teaching effectiveness, research, and service.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive academic community that encourages faculty and staff engagement and collaboration.
- Evaluate and support faculty performance through regular reviews and feedback.
- Oversee recruitment, retention, and development of high-quality faculty and staff.
- Student Success and Support:

Under general direction of the Vice President, Academic Affairs, the Dean provides administrative direction and equity-minded leadership for departments, programs, services, and staff in the areas of Social Sciences, Fine Arts, Humanities English and Languages and Letters. Essential Duties
- Demonstrate effectiveness in serving students from first and 1.5-generation and/or historically underrepresented groups as they pursue their academic goals.
- Assist Gavilan College in efforts to increase student success by developing and implementing equity-minded best practices and programs.
- Provide leadership for program vitality and development and work directly with faculty to plan for curriculum and program additions, modifications, and deletion.
- Set priorities for resource needs, provide program analysis and multi-year instructional plans, and participate in the district's strategic and long-range instructional planning.
- Stay abreast of national trends and innovations in teaching and learning, including effective and engaging classroom practices and techniques, alternate modes of assessment, hiring practices, the role of technology in the classroom, and/or changes in course design prerequisites as related to AB 705 implementation.
- Explain the emerging trends within the division and advocate for program needs at key committees and at meetings.
- Encourage excellence in teaching and provide leadership and mentorship to new faculty.
- Serve on, participate in or lead campus organizations, committees, and meetings.
- Create a positive and collegial working environment for all levels of Division staff and work cooperatively with other campus personnel to integrate and coordinate programs and services across the curriculum within a Guided Pathways framework.
- Prioritize Division financial needs, including new hires, program funding, technology and instructional equipment, and communicate those priorities clearly to the departments involved.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University ( NCAT ) invites nominations and applications for the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences ( CAHSS ) a cornerstone of the University, with nearly every student passing through one of the six departments and a mission to prepare students for a global workforce by providing high quality academic programs, scholarly research and services that are innovative and interdisciplinary across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. CAHSS students can explore over 24 bachelor degrees and three masters degree programs across the departments of Criminal Justice, English, History and Political Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Liberal Studies, and the Visual and Performing Arts/Theater. Launched in the Fall of 2016, the College is home to the Center of Excellence in Social Justice which engages in interdisciplinary local, regional, and national exploration of the past, present and future regarding race, economics, higher education, civil rights, and public policy. With the first cohort founded in Fall 2024, CAHSSs newest degree is the Ph.D. program in Criminal Justice, offering specializations across digital forensics, investigative science, research methodology, and social justice.
Through the College, N.C. A&T is one of the largest producers of undergraduate degrees awarded to African Americans in the visual and performing arts. Its theater program, accredited for more than 30 years, is one of only five accredited programs at HBCUs, and is the third oldest among the programs. The music program has been accredited for more than 25 years. The University is one of the top campuses for masters degrees awarded to African Americans in English, literature, and letters. The Universitys Journalism and Mass Communications department is one of only two accredited programs in the UNC system and is one of only seven accredited programs among HBCUs.
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences ( CAHSS ) serves as the chief academic and administrative leader of the College, providing strategic vision and leadership to advance the Colleges mission in alignment with the Universitys strategic priorities. The Dean fosters excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement while championing innovation, digital advancements, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Dean has an administrative team comprising an Associate Dean for Undergraduate Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Faculty Success, professional staff and six chairs across the CAHSS departments.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences houses the Departments of English, History, Journalism and Mass Communication, Liberal Studies, Political Science and Criminal Justice, and Visual and Performing Arts.

Description/Job Summary
Under the direction of the Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS), the Associate Dean will support curriculum development, course and program assessment, faculty recruitment, professional development, and student-centered scheduling. The Associate Dean will assist in the development of budgets for the academic areas within the academic division. - Maintain current knowledge of new trends and innovations in community colleges and higher education.
- Assist the Dean in providing leadership for accreditation and program review, including the assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Promote excellence in teaching and innovation in curriculum development.
- Facilitate partnerships with high schools to expand the dual enrollment program.
- Assist the Dean in developing guided pathways between Workforce Development and The Academy.
- Work with faculty to plan for curriculum expansions, modification, and deletions; and set priorities for resource needs.
- Facilitate academic partnerships among program faculty and four-year transfer institutions.
- Work with faculty to identify extramural funding to support program development and special projects.
- Assist with recruiting, hiring, and professional development of adjunct faculty.
- Work collaboratively with the program coordinators to manage book adoptions for the division.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of faculty, professional, and support staff.
- Work with the Dean to provide supervision for the course schedule and the assignment of faculty to courses; and monitor workloads.
- Work with the Dean and the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs to manage content for the college catalog.
- Teach two classes per academic term (Fall/Spring)
Education:
- Earned Doctorate from a regionally accredited college or university in Education, History, Sociology, Psychology, the Arts, or a related discipline taught in the School of Arts and Social Sciences.
- Three (3) years of progressive leadership experience at the Associate Dean, Department Chair, Division Head, Center Director level or above with a proven record of full-time faculty supervision, which must include the following:
- Course and program development and review.
- Developing and coordinating course schedules, curriculum, and instruction.
- Faculty and staff performance review.
- Five (5) or more years of full-time teaching in a college/university within a discipline in the arts and social sciences with an earned faculty rank at the assistant professor level or above.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in ensuring implementation of student learning outcomes and assessment of student learning.
- An earned faculty rank at the Associate Professor level or above.
- Five (5) years of experience at the Associate Dean, Department Chair, Division Head, or Center Director level or above with a proven record of full-time faculty supervision, which must include the following:
- Developing public and/or private partnerships and securing external funding.
- Developing relationships with high schools to develop or expand dual enrollment programs.
- Instructional design including technology enhanced methods of course delivery.
- Experience implementing collective bargaining agreements
- Understanding of shared governance and commitment to the mission of a comprehensive community college.
- Collaborative leadership style; demonstrated creativity and flexibility in problem solving.
- Current knowledge of best practices in curriculum development and course/program assessment and institutional/specialized accreditation.
- Understanding of innovative pedagogy and instructional design.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in the use of research, statistical analysis, and information technologies.
- Proven ability to provide leadership in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in ensuring implementation of student learning outcomes and assessment of student learning.
- Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence.
