  • Hands-on experience operating services in Kubernetes, with familiarity in tools like Terraform and Helm.

  • Comfort working across the stack - from low-level infrastructure components to application logic - and making trade-offs to move quickly.

  • A focus on building systems that are both technically sound and easy for others to use.

  • Curiosity and adaptability in fast-changing environments, especially in high-growth orgs.

Weekly Hours: 40

Role Number: 200603921-0836

The Apple Services Engineering (ASE) team is one of the most exciting examples of Apple’s long-held passion for combining art and technology. These are the people who power the App Store, Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books. And they do it on a massive scale, meeting Apple’s high expectations with high performance to deliver a huge variety of entertainment in over 35 languages to more than 150 countries.

These engineers build secure, end-to-end solutions. They develop the custom software used to process all the creative work, the tools that providers use to deliver that media, all the server-side systems, and the APIs for many Apple services.

Thanks to Apple’s outstanding integration of hardware, software, and services, engineers here partner to get behind a single unified vision. That vision always includes a deep dedication to strengthening Apple’s privacy policy, one of Apple’s core values. Although services are a bigger part of Apple’s business than ever before, these teams remain small, forward-thinking, and multi-functional, offering greater exposure to the array of opportunities here.

The ASE Analytics & Data Engineering organization powers the analytics behind the App Store, Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple Fitness+, Apple Books, Apple Wallet, iCloud, and more. These analytics are used to improve user experience, power features like Search and Recommendations, pay royalties, and improve Apple’s business, all while maintaining utmost user privacy.

We’re looking for an engineer to join the team working on defining the future of our privacy-first instrumentation capabilities. You will work at the intersection of product management and engineering with a number of multi-functional collaborators to answer two main questions: What data should we collect for our products and services and how will we get that data from client devices while preserving privacy?

Description

You’ll be tasked with designing, launching, and supporting new data infrastructure products as vital to answer high-level analytics questions at scale.

Your responsibilities will include all aspects of software development management, from brainstorming, design and analysis to development, implementation and maintenance. Additionally, you'll be tasked with defining the strategy for new data infrastructure products as necessary to answer high-level analytics questions at scale. Finally, you will be expected to create and maintain instrumentation specifications—documents that specify what fields and values are collected and when—for all new features released across ASE products and services.

To accomplish all this, you’ll collaborate with a wide range of collaborators including product managers, client and server engineering, data scientists/business analysts, privacy engineers and attorneys, QA, and more.

You will:

  • Design and implement innovative Privacy-preserving systems to be used across ASE products and services

  • Design and develop frameworks and tools to collect analytics data from our products and services on all platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, visionOS, web browsers, and third party platforms.

  • Own the end-to-end product lifecycle for client instrumentation capabilities, creating detailed specifications that provide clear guidance to engineering, data science, and QA stakeholders

  • Manage the end-to-end design, launch, and support of new data infrastructure as needed to address sophisticated analytics needs, including technical system design and implementation

  • Advise business and engineering team members by serving as a data collection subject-matter-expert who understands how analytics-related asks will impact numerous server and client engineering systems

-Lead discussions with privacy and legal teams to ensure that both Apple’s analytics needs are met and consumer privacy is protected

The people here at Apple don’t just create products — they create the kind of wonder that’s revolutionized entire industries. It’s the diversity of those people and their ideas that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do, from amazing technology to industry-leading environmental efforts. Join Apple, and help us leave the world better than we found it.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to assist in the creation and enforcement of privacy and compliance policies and guidelines across ASE and Apple

  • 5+ years of experience working as a software engineer, technical product manager, or engineering-focused management consultant

  • Strong software design skills, coupled with a deep knowledge of data structures and algorithms

  • Experience working with large, multi-functional teams spread across multiple locations

  • Comfort with translating ambiguous high-level analytics questions into concrete engineering asks

  • Clear and concise communication

  • Strong prioritization skills with the ability to balance multiple programs simultaneously with overlapping deadlines

  • 5+ years of professional experience with some or all of the following: data or analytics systems, frameworks or toolkits, Swift, Objective-C, JavaScript, C/C++, Java, TypeScript, React, Angular, Ember, Vue

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven experience in Privacy-Enhancing Technologies for large-scale distributed systems

  • Experience with differential privacy, private data-synchronization across systems and devices, data minimization, tokenization, cryptography
