Join a team building the Service Mesh and Ingress Gateway load balancing and proxy platform.

The Microservices Platform Service Mesh team is building a highly scalable and distributed load balancing and gateway service to front all customer traffic coming into Salesforce. We provide simple declarative interfaces for L4/L7 load balancing, TLS termination, end-to-end encryption, along with support for richer traffic policies such as blue/green deployments, access control, etc. The team owns the application networking layer and enables secure, resilient, observable communication. The team develops and manages the Salesforce API Platform's runtime plane that applies API policies, handles requests, and enforces security. We're responsible for the execution of sophisticated routing rules to the appropriate upstream services. The runtime plane is a dedicated extensible infrastructure layer facilitating service-to-service and customer-to-service communication via proxies managed by the control plane such that policies can be applied at these proxies. The runtime plane is built using Envoy and Istio. It is extensible and features are built into these proxies or are integrations at these proxies with no change to actual services.

We are looking for people who can drive the design and implementation of the next generation Ingress Gateway data plane and control plane. We intend to transform our current software stack to adopt more cloud native primitives to build a more reliable, scalable, and feature-rich service mesh. Our software stack is based on leading edge open source software like Envoy for data plane and Istio for control plane. The opportunities to enhance the capabilities of the OSS software and contribute back to the community are immense. The team has already made active upstream contributions to the Envoy project. We intend to transform the way our north-south traffic is secured, load balanced and proxied before entering our core service mesh. We are looking to add experienced distributed systems engineers who are passionate, hungry for new challenges, can step up and own large areas of that vision.

Some attributes of successful candidates:

* Passion for service ownership, building reliable, and self-healing services.
* Proven ability to work in complex team environments and deliver under pressure with dependency constraints.
* Expertise in building large scale distributed systems, especially in public cloud environments (i.e. AWS, GCP).

Job Description

As the Software Engineering Manager (Data Services) you will report to the Director of Engineering
(Data and Machine Learning) and continuously collaborate with key stakeholders across the business while overseeing the design, development, and maintenance of backend data services and data products to solve the most critical technical problems.

Responsibilities:

• Take ownership for achieving objectives and key results for your team, allocate resources, oversee & own technical solutions, communicate schedule, status, and milestones
• Lead and manage a team of Software and Data engineers by setting goals, supervising work, providing guidance, evaluating performance, removing barriers, cultivating career development, and promoting job satisfaction
• Work closely with stakeholders to understand project requirements and define project plans for the development and timely delivery
• Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Translate technical concepts into understandable terms for different audiences.
• Collaborate with architects and senior engineers to design scalable and efficient systems using architecture best practices while ensuring that the chosen technologies align with the organization's goals and future needs.
• Review code and provide technical guidance to ensure high-quality code standards and adherence to best practices
• Oversee the reliability and performance by implementing monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to identify and address issues proactively.
• Enforce data governance policies and best practices. Ensure data quality, security, and compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
• Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices. Encourage continuous learning and skill development within the team.

Qualifications

Required Experience & Skills:

• BS or MS in Computer Science or related field; or comparable experience.
• 8+ years as a Software Engineer with a strong data engineering background (backend services, API, data pipelines and infrastructure)
• 2+ year of experience leading and managing at least 4 engineers
• Experience in developing production-grade applications using Python, JavaScript, TypeScript,
• and Node.js.
• Experience with developing and scaling data APIs (REST, GraphQL, Apollo ), microservices
• and event driven systems
• In-depth knowledge of data warehousing, data pipelines, data integration
• Proficient with SQL and NoSQL flavors like PostgreSQL, Snowflake and DynamoDB.
• Experience with AWS, Git, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Kubernetes, Serverless
• (Lambda, SQS, SNS)
• You've set up successful test suites to cover unit, integration, e2e, load, and security tests.
• Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
• Experience in project management, resource allocation, and stakeholder collaboration.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide a technical team
• Familiarity with NestJS, Node.js, FastAPI, PostgresSQL, Snowflake, DynamoDB, Kafka,
• Fivetran, dbt, Airflow, Docker, Kubernetes, DataDog, PagerDuty

About The Role

You will lead a skilled team of engineers focused on test frameworks, engineering tools, and web applications which powers the engineering experience at PlayStation. You’ll partner with product, design, AI/ML, and engineering teams across the globe to define, build, and scale tools used to build experiences for customers, from the PlayStation interface to peripherals, such as the PULSE Elite™ wireless headset.
