General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate professional work serving as prosecutor, preparing cases for prosecution, trying cases in Court, preparing and maintaining files and records, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Chief Assistant Solicitor.

Essential Functions
Prepares and presents misdemeanor cases in the County Courts system.
Tries criminal offenses brought under State and County statutes and ordinances.
Interviews law enforcement officers, victims, witnesses, probation officers, and other individuals in preparing cases.
Conducts comprehensive research in preparation for trials.
Prepares, reviews, and processes necessary documents in preparing for trials including docket preparation, reviewing law enforcement reports, photographs, and exhibits, securing criminal and traffic records, and documentation of prior convictions, etc.
Provides assistance and responds to questions from citizens and law enforcement officers.
Provides advice and training on investigations to law enforcement personnel.
Researches and proposes plea agreements with specific terms and conditions of sentencing appropriate to the assigned case.
Reviews case files to determine necessary witnesses for trial and hearings, assures that all required witnesses are subpoenaed to appear as required.
Develops trial strategies for each case and conducts bench and jury trials by determining appropriate jury instructions, examining witnesses at trial, and arguing matters at trial as assistant or lead counsel.
Drafts and files appropriate pre-trial motions and briefs; review trial transcripts; recommends available State and local options for resources and support services.
Responds to and argues pre and post-trial motions; including researching, drafting, and filing necessary pleadings and briefs, as well as, participating in oral arguments in appellate courts.
Creates and maintains files on cases to include evidence and detailed documentation; ensures case, witness information and charges are correctly entered into the appropriate case database.
Represents the State in contested probation revocation hearings.
Attends Accountability Court team meetings as necessary.
Assists with pre-trial diversion calendars as necessary.
Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the law of evidence and criminal procedure, knowledge of legal research and ability to conduct legal research. Ability to prepare cases for prosecution with minimal assistance; ability to present cases through the questioning of witnesses and introduction of relevant evidence; ability to argue motions, objections and sentences; ability to read, analyze and interpret complex legal documents; ability to express complex ideas orally and in writing; ability to speak extemporaneously and persuasively; ability to apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems; ability to handle difficult trial and appellate litigation; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, attorneys, law enforcement officials, Federal officials, State officials, County officials, witnesses and the general public.
Education and Experience
Juris Doctorate required. Experience practicing as a criminal prosecutor or defense attorney is helpful, but not required.
Physical Requirements

As part of the Attorney General's Honors Program, the Geoffrey Wright Solicitor General Fellowship (previously known as the Earl Warren Solicitor General Fellowship) selects one recent law school graduate to serve in a limited term assignment as a Geoffrey Wright Fellow in the California Office of the Solicitor General. The Solicitor General is responsible for ensuring the excellence of the Attorney General's appellate practice. The Office of the Solicitor General serves as a clearinghouse for appeals handled by the Department of Justice; provides appellate advice to all divisions within the Department of Justice; prepares or oversees the preparation of briefs, petitions, and other papers filed in appellate courts, including the U.S. and California Supreme Courts; argues appeals in federal and state courts; and supports the improvement of appellate practice skills Department-wide. The Office's cases often address significant constitutional, statutory, and policy questions arising in diverse areas of both civil and criminal law. The Geoffrey Wright Fellow participates in and supports the work of the Office, working with other attorneys in the Office and the Department on a wide variety of civil, criminal, and public-rights matters, often under tight deadlines. Duties include researching and advising on complex or novel legal issues; assisting with the review and preparation of recommendations concerning Department action in appellate matters, including filing or joining amicus curiae briefs in significant cases; assisting with the drafting and reviewing of court papers and with preparation for oral argument, including participating in moot courts; and assisting with the development and implementation of best practices for appellate litigation.
Working Conditions
This is a hybrid position with the opportunity to work remotely or in the office on most days, but some regular required in-office attendance. Travel and additional in-person attendance may be required for court appearances, meetings, and other occasional operational needs.
