We are seeking a Sports Physical Therapy Upper Extremity Fellow to:

  • Attend and participate in didactic education designed to advance clinical reasoning and pattern recognition in sports medicine and sports physical therapy.
  • Challenge their own and others' clinical decision making through constructive feedback in didactic units and case presentations.
  • Form alliances with patients and their families with the common goal of optimizing function and return to sport following acute injuries, surgical procedures and non-traumatic impairments.
  • Learn advanced level clinical biomechanics for evaluation and treatment in our upper extremity specialty clinics - swimmers, throwers, tactical athletes and strength and power.
  • Participate in Sports Performance coaching and training with high level travel baseball club teams.
  • Receive and modify practice patterns based on constructive feedback from mentors.
  • Participate in education by teaching in the sports medicine education series, the sports medicine symposium, and various outreach programs.
  • Collaborate on a weekly basis with board certified and fellowship trained sports medicine physicians and surgeons, including working as a physician extender in clinic and surgical observations.
  • Work in our state-of-the-art facilities - including the 28,000 square foot sports rehab facility at East Madison Hospital that has an indoor turf field, two pools, a basketball court, a golf hitting area with a K-vest, a sprint track and functionally based weight room. The Science Drive Medical Center has a fitness center to allow for movement-based sports rehabilitation.
  • Participate in mentor guided sports medicine projects.

Additional Information:

  • This position spends six months training in Dunedin, FL with the Toronto Blue Jays organization (March-August). What you can expect:
    • Athletic training room care and field coverage of spring training and regular season games with certified athletic trainers and physical therapists.

The UPMC/CRS Sports Residency offers two residency positions with slightly different tracks.
Professional Athlete Focus:
This position has two specific sports venue coverage components.  During the first 9 months, the resident spends two days a week in the athletic training room at Carnegie Mellon University with a sports residency faculty member to treat any athletes who require post-operative PT.  During the second half of the program, the resident spends a minimum of 10 hours/week in the training room with the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Club.
Youth Athlete Focus:
This position focuses on the treatment of high school aged athletes during the first year of the residency. The resident spends 2-3 afternoons per week providing on-field and training room coverage at a local high school with one of our staff athletic trainers.  This allows for a wide variety of sport experiences including but not limited to football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, baseball and track and field. During the final 5-6 months of the program the resident is assigned to assist in the Pitt Department of Athletics, primarily with Men's and Women's basketball
The Sports Residency is 18 months
Responsibilities:
+ Performs physical therapy assessment, reassessment and treatment and supervises physical therapist assistants in the treatment of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients referred by a physician to the clinic
+ Develops plan of care including goals and treatment plan in accordance with physician referral, nature of injury/illness and results of physical therapy assessment
+ Modifies or adjusts plan of care based on patient's response to treatment and/or changes in patient's status
+ Maintains written documentation for all physical therapy services rendered including documentation of initial assessment, follow-up visits, and discharge summary consistent with department standards

This clinic was established in the last five years in has a beautiful open gym setup with floor to ceiling windows and a diverse team of clinicians. Physical therapists at the clinic work directly with providers receiving referrals. + Complete and maintain all corporate and clinical services required training and maintain compliance with state/local/federal regulations

This job coordinates the day to day program operations of the athletic trainers; plans and organizes coverage for all contracted events; assumes responsibility for ensuring vacation coverage and oversight of trainers' monthly work hours; prepares reports for review while ensuring reimbursements are submitted in a timely manner; and provides recommendations for staff development.

**Education**
Required - Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training

**Work Experience**

**Certifications**
Required - Current Athletic Trainer License in state of practice
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association

+ Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
+ Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
+ Strong interpersonal skills.
+ Must be able to tolerate temperature of 100 degrees or more for three hours during outdoor events.
+ Ability to work flexible schedule and extended shifts as required.
**Job Duties**
+ Provides effective Supervisory/Management support.
+ Serves as a Liaison between the Athletic Training program, schools/club sports and the Sports Medicine clinic.
+ Coordinates the human resource and compliance needs of the program.
+ Collaborates with the development representative to market the Athletic Training program and coordinate community events.
+ Prepares age and prognosis appropriate treatment under the supervision of the physician/advanced practice clinician, and performs on-field immediate care for injury, recommending physician or therapy follow up.
+ Assumes responsibility for self development.
+ Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
