OverviewThe System Administration Manager manages and provides technical leadership for the Computer Science Department's Technical Staff, which provides a large and diverse set of computer-based services in support of departmental research, teaching, and administration. The Manager must possess mature technical skills to act as a first-among-equals within a talented technical staff; well-developed administrative skills including long term computational facility planning and budgeting; and strong personal skills. Reports to the Manager and the Departmental Chair.
Responsibilities- Responsible for long-term planning and requirement specification in departmental research, instructional, and administrative computing.
- Oversee the department's computer infrastructure, including Linux and Apple machines; manage datacenter operations and related facilities (e.g., racking, installation, and understanding cooling systems).
- Collaborate with PSD IT Team and the Office of CISO, IT security, etc.; manage all IT needs for the Computer Science department.
- Lead a team of four professional staff; establish performance goals, allocate resources, and assess policies for direct subordinates.
- Work with faculty on advanced research computing needs; advise on computational components of grant proposals in support of research computing.
- Coordinate with the Computing Committee Chair and serve ex officio on the Department's Computing Committee to identify issues and opportunities in departmental research computing and set policies in accordance with University policies.
- Work with Directors of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, Departmental Counselor, and Instructional Lab Manager on instructional computing leadership and support.
- Assist the Departmental Chair and Departmental Administrator on administrative computing leadership and support.
- Collaborate with other high-level IT professionals at the University to represent the department in technical matters and seek operational efficiencies through cooperation with other units.
- Manage project progress with accurate logs; ensure projects have necessary oversight and approvals for successful completion.
- Ensure implementation of approved best practices and IT policies for high-quality systems administration.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum: college or university degree in a related field. Preferred: Bachelor's degree in computer science.
Work ExperienceMinimum: 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline, with knowledge and skills developed accordingly.

Preferred Qualifications- Experience managing networked servers and workstations with knowledge of TCP/IP, system utilities, hardware installation, and OS installation.
- Experience in a multi-platform network environment including mail service, backup/restore technologies, Macintosh and PC support, and GUI environments.
- Direct experience with Linux operating systems; experience with research technologies including SLURM.
- Client and web server administration experience; programming languages such as Python, Ruby, C, C++, Bash scripting; virtualization technologies; data and network security; LDAP; system configuration and management.
- Knowledge of cluster configuration/management, backup technologies, Linux, Proxmox virtualization, Puppet, and heterogeneous computing environments.
- Strong competencies in complex IT environments, problem-solving, learning new procedures quickly, and ability to train staff; integrity and credibility with sensitive data.
