What You Will Do Lead the development of high-impact digital storytelling across design, research, and strategy initiatives—from concept to execution. Present sophisticated concepts and solutions to non-technical audiences using storytelling, visual communication, and data-driven insights. Lead the end-to-end creation of original video content, including storyboarding, scripting, animating, editing, sound design, and post-production. Own the creative development and visual direction of storytelling pieces in collaboration with design teams, strategists, researchers, and marketing leads. Translate complex ideas into compelling visual narratives, leveraging real-time engines, motion graphics, AI content generation, and other advanced digital tools. Partner with the Design Technology Director to build a high-performing storytelling team, promoting a culture of experimentation, innovation, and collaboration across disciplines. Partner with architects, designers, strategists, and technologists to identify storytelling opportunities at all project phases—from pursuit through project completion. Establish and refine production workflows to scale storytelling capabilities across the region. Stay updated with cutting-edge technologies and industry trends, directing the team's R&D roadmap and tool adoption. Collaborate with Marketing, Brand, and Communications teams to support pitches, pursuits, and project storytelling. Manage project timelines, creative briefs, and stakeholder feedback from inception to delivery. Your Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in a field such as Architecture, Design, Film, Animation, Game Design, Media Arts, Visual Communication, or work experience. 5+ years of experience in digital storytelling, visual communication, or interactive media, ideally within design, architecture, gaming, film, or technology. Solid experience with emerging technologies, visualization, Artificial Intelligence, etc. Strong knowledge of both hardware and software requirements to deliver high-impact digital stories through video and other immersive platforms. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skills along with the ability to think creatively and critically. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Expertise in storytelling and visual communication, with a demonstrated ability to use these skills to convey innovative ideas for diverse audiences. MONUM is seeking a Senior Program Manager with a focus on Storytelling to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the MONUM Director or their designee, this pivotal role involves leading a portfolio of projects and providing strategic creative direction that significantly elevates and guides our team's storytelling efforts. This includes championing new approaches to narrative and visual communication. Additionally, they will manage key components of team operations, as all members of the team do, contributing to the team's overall effectiveness, especially involving strategic communications and sharing the impact of the team's work broadly.
The ideal candidate is a master storyteller, capable of translating complex civic challenges into compelling narratives using diverse creative methods (visual design, illustration, video) to inspire action and build momentum. This role requires a strong ability to think creatively within complex systems and possess an entrepreneurial, collaborative spirit for seamless cross-team engagement, drawing expertise from human-centered design, service design, and/or visual design.
Responsibilities- Explore and develop a portfolio of projects that flexibly use MONUM's "model" of explore, experiment, and evaluate to deliver exceptional services to Boston's residents, workers, visitors, and more. You will bring design and storytelling practices to bear on the team's portfolio of projects. This will range from developing strong visual components to the work to helping shape large city initiatives through a civic design and storytelling lens.
- Elevate storytelling across the team. You will be charged with designing and workshopping storytelling efforts with project managers across the MONUM team to ultimately support the Mayor's priorities. You will work closely with the MONUM and Analytics leads to elevate qualitative research alongside robust quantitative data practices to better reflect resident experiences and needs.
- Contribute to building MONUM's strategy for civic design practice and storytelling work. Your work will center on utilizing and sharing design and storytelling tools meant to prioritize residents' experiences in order to exercise a more inclusive practice.
- Effectively communicate the impact and value of our work through compelling and creative storytelling. This includes developing engaging narratives, utilizing visual design, illustration, video, or other methods, and creating both print and digital design artifacts to build momentum for this work.
- Forge inclusive new partnerships. You will work to form new relationships and constructive partnerships within and external to the government. Identifying opportunities for collaboration between the City, design institutions, and civic groups. You will spearhead new engagement strategies with residents that break the current mold.
- Mentor & inspire the next generation of Civic Designers. Use this position to engage young people and aspiring designers to consider public sector opportunities as a potential path for their careers. Work with MONUM leadership to develop and experiment with fellowship opportunities.
- Thoughtfully mentor Program Managers, summer fellows, and youth fellowships as constructed.
- Support the entire team as a coach and mentor. This includes consultation, construction of materials, thought partnership, critique of prototypes in various stages, and thought leadership on civic design and storytelling.
- Participate in internally facing work, such as hiring for our summer fellowship programs, quarterly review and goal setting, helping other departments with tactical requests, and other things that invariably will come up when working in a dynamic, responsive environment.
- Document and share what you learn through your work: writing, visually representing, speaking at classes and at conferences, participating in MONUM's "front door" approach to taking meetings, and talking about the work.

- At least four (4) years of experience working in a design-related field.
- A bachelor's degree is required.
- A graduate degree in a design-related field is preferred and may be substituted for up to three (3) years of required experience.
- Candidates should be strong relationship builders with demonstrated ability to work with internal and external partners, facilitate collaboration with multiple organizations with differing interests, and represent the City of Boston.
- Candidates should be "self-starters," comfortable with risk, and passionate about solving hard civic challenges with creative, original solutions.

- Demonstrated experience utilizing design, illustration, or video editing for effective storytelling to a range of stakeholders. Proficient in related software tools (Adobe Suite, Figma, Final Cut, Motion, etc).
- A diverse set of work experience is preferred, with subject matter expertise in areas such as design, public policy, storytelling, social justice, urban planning, or community engagement, and the ability to blend subject matters. Experience working within local government is appreciated but not essential.
- Additional language proficiency in one of the City of Boston's top ten commonly requested languages or American Sign Language is preferred.
- Strong organizational, workflow management, program management, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills are required along with the ability to exercise good judgment.

+ Leverage AI to design scalable processes for sourcing, drafting, localizing, and repurposing customer stories and best practice content globally
+ Lead the strategy for featuring customer voices at strategic first- and third-party events, sourcing and prepping customer speakers, and ensuring compelling stage presence
+ Collaborate with PR, social, and content teams to amplify customer stories, insights, and best practices across owned and earned channels using modern storytelling formats

We operate at large scales using best of breed backend services and we move fast to delight our customers.
