Summary:
The Learning Support Specialist is a member of our Learning and Innovation team. The Learning and Innovation team is at the forefront of developing learning experiences in a technically rich environment, contributing to many UMGC initiatives. The Learning Support Specialist is a key contributor to the team responsible for applying course updates and troubleshooting functionality issues for online courses in a higher education environment. This team member will contribute to effectively supporting and maintaining platforms and technologies that enable next-generation learning experiences. This includes but is not limited to, learning management systems, content management systems, and third-party and custom-developed learning technologies. Core skills required in this role include excellent communication, problem-solving, and the ability to learn and work across many technologies.
Please note: The core hours for this position are 11am-7pm Eastern Time. This position also requires commitment to being on call for critical issues during assigned weekends and holidays.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Process content change requests and maintain content versioning.
- Effectively address support requests related to learning technology; responsible for research and development of resolutions to new and emerging issues that require the highest level of technical expertise for the supported platforms.
- Provide high-quality written communication to collaborate professionally with customers and other departments, document ticket resolution, and contribute towards team process and product documentation repository.
- Effectively lead meetings with stakeholders to gather course updates and trouble-shooting needs.
- Generate reports for the ticketing system, learning management, and content management systems; recognize, and act on inconsistencies in data and escalate issues.
- Perform testing, analyze testing results, and report errors to appropriate teams.
- Create user stories for bugs, enhancements, or new technologies.
- Provide training and technical assistance for applicable systems or processes to customers and team members, as needed.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Execute project plans related to learning technology and content management-related processes and initiatives.
- Manage user accounts, groups, and permissions for supported content management systems.
- Perform other job-related duties as required.

Experience:

Education:
- Bachelor's degree

- Basic knowledge of HTML, HTML5, and CSS

Basic function: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Learning Support Services (LSS) Specialist will perform and oversee a wide variety of specialized clerical and technical duties involved in the coordination of the College's onsite and online tutorial services; oversees the daily operations of the open access computer lab; provides testing and exam proctoring services; and other related learning support services as assigned.
Representative DutiesCoordinates the recruitment, assignment, and scheduling of student tutors to meet faculty and student needs. Assists with the staffing and scheduling of the computer and tutorial labs. Implements and posts a master schedule. Coordinates lab or classroom needs. Assists student tutors and student workers with employment onboarding and orientation. Provide student worker supervision and tasking as directed by the supervisor. Oversees tutors and student workers to ensure timely completion and submission of work assigned, as well as provide guidance to student workers on adherence to district policies and directives. Provides tutors and student workers with training, including training in the use of study skill material and online resources. Updates the information web page(s) for the tutorial services, proctoring and computer commons, including the availability of services, hours, and policy descriptions. Performs periodic analysis of tutor scheduling and assignments to optimize learning support services that meet student needs. Monitors student progress and refers students to other appropriate college services, as appropriate. Proctors exams and assessment testing. Assists with the implementation and monitoring of proctoring services for online and distance learning. Distribute and collect testing materials; provide instructions and monitoring during proctored tests; assure compliance with established testing requirements, regulations and procedures; Reports any testing impropriety, including items leading to recommended test exclusion or invalidation, to assigned supervisor. Assists in developing and enforcing student usage policies and guidelines. Works closely with assigned supervisor and IT to maintain computer lab equipment and manage computer lab software. Monitors equipment and software for the assigned lab(s). Maintains a variety of hardware and software applications required for learning support services. Troubleshoots minor software problems as related to lab and classroom stations. Provides computer related technical support necessary to ensure student success in the computer lab environment. Assists students and faculty with basic academic related computer and software usage, including the very basics of the College's learning management system (LMS) and other student account login and navigation. Assists students with issues related to College-provided student account and software access. Collaborates and works with other staff members in providing students and faculty with learning support services. Maintains an up-to-date inventory of instructional materials, books, solution manuals and related office supplies needed for tutorial and computer labs. Systems, Reporting, and Program Operations• Maintain learner records in the Learning Management System, including uploading completions, tracking assignments, and compiling feedback for reporting• Manage access to LinkedIn Learning, SuccessFactors and resolve any employee issues• Assist with key Talent Development processes such as performance management and certification by coordinating sessions, tracking participation, and preparing related materials• Track and submit invoices, and maintain accurate documentation to support Talent Development budgets• Create and update standard operating procedures to ensure consistency and knowledge sharing
Facilitator Engagement, Communication, and Process Improvement• Coordinate with volunteer facilitators to confirm session coverage, manage facilitator communications, and assist with appreciation and graduation events• Respond to employee questions related to learning sessions, tools, and registration• Manage internal communications and scheduling announcements for onboarding and learning programs• Support administrative logistics for employee objectives, executive director and team dynamic innate traits debriefs• Identify opportunities to improve tools, processes, and templates across Talent Development operations
What You Bring
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience• At least 1-2 years of experience in an HR, Talent Development, Learning, or administrative support role (Internship experience welcome)• Experience using systems such as a Learning Management System, HRIS, or other internal platforms• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail• Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines with minimal follow-up• Strong communication and customer service skills• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Zoom, and Microsoft Teams• Ability to handle sensitive data and employee questions with discretion• Eagerness to learn, take initiative, and improve existing processes

Smithbucklin considers several factors when determining compensation, including a candidate's recent coursework, training, experience, and certifications, among other considerations. The expected pay for this role is $50,000 – $54,000.
