Duties
Help
Provides nursing expertise and leadership in medical/surgical, mental health and other specialty units throughout the institution.
Responsible for the quality and appropriateness of comprehensive nursing care provided to patients where nursing care is provided.
Monitors and evaluates nursing practice to promote consistency in performance and ensure safe patient care is provided.
Serves as a resource person to other nursing staff.
Supervises and monitors various inmate staffed health services programs functioning within the facility.
Responsible for developing and approving the quarterly nursing unit work schedule.
Participates in audits, program reviews and surveys by the institution, Bureau of Prisons, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Assures the components of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation) are carried out by nursing staff in all areas of responsibility.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements.
Basic Requirements:
Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission of Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
AND
Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-09 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
* Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; OR
* At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-10 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.
Some examples of this qualifying experience are:
* Extensive knowledge of professional nursing concepts, principles, practices and nursing standards as related to medical and surgical nursing.
* Knowledge of a wide variety of drugs, dosages, therapeutic action and adverse reactions, techniques and operational mechanics of medical equipment, ability to transcribe physician's orders and accurately record in medical records.
* Ability to communicate with patients and health care staff and to be able to advise the patient on health care needs with consideration of mental, emotional, cultural, social and physical factors.
* Experience supervising staff, monitoring work performance or developing and approving work schedules in a hospital setting or medical office.
If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

Initial appointment to a supervisory/managerial position requires a one-year probationary period.
The incumbent is subject to geographic relocation to meet the needs of the agency.

Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques", three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.

Leadership Training: All newly appointed, second level supervisors and managers are required to complete mandatory training. The training will be scheduled by the Office of Training and Development within the first 90 days of appointment. The duration of the training will include 4 weeks of in residence training in Harpers Ferry, WV. Note: This training may be waived if previously completed.
