Mercy Hospital's Surgery Center offers a complete range of surgical services in a convenient centralized location. The center includes an endovascular suite with vascular imaging capabilities, enhancing the surgeons' abilities to perform vascular procedures. Following surgery, patients are usually transported from the Operating Room to the Cardiovascular Surgical Care Unit, where they will stay until they are discharged. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant on the team, you will coordinate with fellow caregivers to create a welcoming, healing and warm environment for patients in this 12-bed unit. This position offers the ability to pursue educational advancement, higher positions and skills development courses offered by Cleveland Clinic. **A caregiver in this position works days/evenings from 7:00AM - 3:30PM or 3:00PM - 11:30PM, with rotating weekend and holiday requirements.**
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN. Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.
+ Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.
+ Assist with keeping patients' rooms clean and orderly.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Qualifications

- Training Options:
- Successful completion of a surgical technology program from a military branch or the U.S. Public Health Service.
- Completion of an accredited surgical technology education program.
- Two years of surgical technology experience in a healthcare setting between 2014 and 2017.
- Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Experience with computer applications is preferred.

The Patient Care Technician functions as a clinical support partner, assisting the patient care team by performing various tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional. Additionally, the Patient Care Technician may assume the responsibilities of a health unit coordinator.

**Unit Description:**
+ SIMC offers caregivers exposure to a diverse patient population, enhancing clinical experience.
+ Team members collaborate effectively in a fast-paced setting, fostering a supportive work culture.
+ Shifts are 12 hours in duration, starting at either 0500 or 1700.
+ The unit consists of 25 beds and accommodates both surgical and intermediate care patients.
+ SIMC also serves as an overflow unit for other critical care and medical departments.

**Essential Functions**
+ Prioritize and deliver basic patient care, including toileting, bathing, linen and clothing changes, fresh water and ice, ambulating, comfort measures, and other patient needs, while providing excellent customer service when responding to patient and family requests.
+ Reports and records patient care findings and data in a timely manner. Reports changes in the patient condition quickly and secures qualified assistance as needed.
+ May perform telemetry duties as required based on the unit, and function as a patient care attendant by monitoring patients, addressing patient care needs, and collaborating with other members of the patient care team as required.
+ Transport medications from the delivery system to the RN as required when working on a clinical unit.
+ Collaborate and consult with the RN and other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient care.
+ May assume the responsibilities of a health unit coordinator, including answering phones, transcribing physician orders, managing unit records, organizing, stocking, and maintaining unit supplies.
+ Implements plan of care as delegated.
+ Performs assigned duties within Scope of Practice. Performs specialized procedures with skill validation and according to regulatory standards.

**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Current C.N.A. Certification OR the following apply if working in the State of Utah:
+ Completion of nursing assistant training program. Verification of nursing assistant training program completion required _and_ C.N.A. certification required within 120 days of hire.

+ Completion of a fundamentals of nursing class with a passing grade within the past two (2) years. Official transcript required to verify completion of class _and_ C.N.A. certification required within 120 days of hire.
For those hired into a skilled nursing facility or long-term care center, obtaining a C.N.A. certification within 120 days allowed only if the new hire has never been a C.N.A. in Utah. If previously certified, hire must have a current and valid C.N.A. certification before the start date.

**Physical Requirements**
+ Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
+ Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
+ Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
+ Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
+ Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
+ May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
+ For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
