Department Information: Performing an average of 7,000 cases each year, the Operating Room at SMJH has 8 OR suites and offers a variety of service lines including; Complex GYN, Neurosurgery, Vascular/Thoracic and Orthopedic surgery. It is also the 2nd highest-performing OR in the Sentara system for Orthopedic total joint procedures.

Overview

The Surgical Assistant II anticipates the needs of the surgical team, the Surgical Assistant assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, set up of various tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.

Demonstrates in depth clinical and technical skills in 3 surgical specialties. Participates in departmental improvement efforts to include quality improvement projects, conducting in-services, etc.

As a Cardiovascular Surgical Assistant, you will:
• Assist the OR team in setting up the operating room for surgical procedures, collaborates with the surgical team in selecting the appropriate equipment and positioning devises for the surgery. Anticipate additional instrument and supplies needed during the procedure.
• Collaborate with the surgical team when positioning the patient making certain the body is in proper alignment, pressure points are padded, circulation and nerve impingement are not compromised, and the position provides exposure for the surgical procedure and anesthesia access. Follow surgeon position preferences and well as patient comfort and safety.
• Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis by: Permanent: Clamping and /or cauterizing vessels or tissue; tying and /or ligating clamped vessels or tissues; applying hemostatic clips; Placing local hemostatic agents.
• Apply sutures, staples, clips, or other materials to close skin, facia, or subcutaneous wound layers
• Assist in the insertion, positioning, or suturing of closed-wound drainage systems
• Discuss with surgeon the nature of the surgical procedure, including operative consent, methods of operative exposure, diagnostic or laboratory data, or patient-advanced directives or other needs.
• Incise tissue layers in lower or upper extremities to harvest veins
• Monitor and maintain aseptic technique throughout procedures
• Anticipate surgeon's/physicians moves in an expeditious manner.
• Close body planes utilizing appropriate techniques.
• Apply appropriate wound dressings: liquid, spray, absorbent material and immobilization dressings.
• Work collaboratively with the surgical team to expedite safe surgical care.
• Transport patient to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) with the assistance of the anesthesia provider.

Qualifications include:
• 3-5 years of experience as a cardiac surgical first assistant in an active cardiac program
• 1-2 years Cardiac surgery experience
• Graduate of CAAHEP Surgical Assistant program recognized by US Dept. Of Ed.
• Initial Certification CSFA, CSA or SA-C
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred. Obtain in first year.
• Maintain mandated Certification competencies & CEU's

Job Summary:

  • Assists with patient positioning, skin clipping and prepping, foley catheterization and draping?

During surgical procedures: Use sponges and suction; Cauterization processes; Appropriately place and manipulate retractors (with or without padding); Irrigate the wound site(s); Cut suture material, handle hemostats, and tie suture; Provides assistance securing drains to tissue? **Surgical Assistant - St. Mary's Hospital**
**Three -12 hour shifts - 7:45 am - 8:15 pm**
**Candidates accepting a full time offer of employment may be eligible for a sign-on bonus of $5000 for new graduates and $7500 for candidates with at least one year of experience! **Job Summary:**
The Surgical Assistant serves in the assistant role in the provision of care to patients undergoing a surgical procedure under the supervision of the provider in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the organization. The Surgical Assistant is an entry-level practitioner and focused on learning and growing in this role.   
**Essential Functions:**
+ Performs surgical hand scrub, gowning, and gloving according to policy.  Routinely functions as first or second assist on assigned cases.  Functions in the Surgical Tech capacity fulfilling the scrub role as assigned, demonstrating knowledge and implementation of sterile technique. Checks all instruments to ensure they are in proper working order prior to use.  Assists with sponge, sharps, and instrument counts per policy and procedures.  Handles specimens in accordance with hospital policy and procedure. 
+ Protects patient information based on hospital policy and government regulations to assure information is kept confidential.  Participates in unit and hospital efforts to reduce adverse patient care events.  Actively participates in the Universal Protocol procedures that assure correct site surgery.   
+ Communicates effectively with the circulating nurse upon observance of any missing or malfunctioning instruments and/or indication of any compromise to sterility.  Reports any implants device, catheters, drains and packing circulator.  
+ Assists with OR case preparation: Utilizes surgeon's preference list to procure equipment and arrange proper placement in the OR; Utilizes aseptic technique when establishing the sterile field, opening supplies and instruments; Assists with monitoring and maintaining the sterile field.   
+ Assists with patient positioning, skin clipping and prepping, foley catheterization and draping.  
+ Under the direct observation of the surgeon, may: Insert secondary trocars; Place instruments through trocars; Utilize power equipment and stapling devices (other than skin stapling); Inject infiltration local anesthetic medications excluding Exparel.  During surgical procedures: Use sponges and suction; Cauterization processes; Appropriately place and manipulate retractors (with or without padding); Irrigate the wound site(s); Cut suture material, handle hemostats, and tie suture; Provides assistance securing drains to tissue.  Closes the surgical wound: May assist suture closing of fascia layer under the direct observation of the surgeon; Sutures the subcutaneous tissues and skin including with the use of a skin stapler if needed.  Applies appropriate wound dressings, including medicated dressings.

Qualifications:

  • Registered and licensed with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Assistant required.
  • Certified First Surgical Assistant with the National Board of National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)
