The role of the Surgical Assistant is critical in providing exceptional patient care resulting in the best clinical outcomes and meeting the needs of our patients. 

Role and Responsibilities

The Surgical Assistant will help surgeons during surgery by performing duties such as tissue retraction, intravenous lines, and completing documentation. 

• Performs preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate patient care.
• Verifies the identity of patients and operative sites.
• Discusses with surgeon the nature of the surgical procedure including operative consent and methods of operative exposure.
• Monitors and maintains aseptic technique throughout procedures.
• Maintains an unobstructed operative field using surgical retractors, sponges, and suctioning and irrigating equipment.
• Determines availability of necessary equipment and supplies for operative procedures.
• Obtains and inspects sterile and non-sterile surgical equipment, supplies and instruments.
• Operates sterilization devices.
• Monitors patient intraoperative status.
• Obtains dental radiographs and dental imaging. 
• Completes patient clinical narratives.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience 

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• BLS certification required or the ability to complete within 1 month of hire.
• At Least one year of related experience preferred.
• DAANCE certification preferred.
• Licensed dental assistant preferred.
• Radiology certification preferred.

**Job Summary and Qualifications**
1. Position Summary:
The Surgical Certified First Assistant (CFA) or Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) is a specially trained individual who is able to participate in and actively assist the surgeon in completing operations safely and expeditiously by helping to provide exposure, maintain hemostasis, and other technical functions. provides assisting services in both the preparation for and the performance of surgery. The CFA or RNFA is experienced in all aspects of aseptic technique, setting up the required equipment and sterile supplies as needed for their assigned cases, pulling cases as needed, and breaking down cases at the end of the procedure. He/she is knowledgeable regarding instrumentation, equipment and supply needs for all types of surgical procedures. These include, but are not limited to tissue handling, wound retraction/exposure, positioning, aseptic practices, providing hemostasis and suturing of tissue, as directed. The CFA or RNFA performs delegated duties consistent with his/her scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery.

+ Prepare for the procedure or surgery by participating in the performance of the safety check/universal protocol determining the specific equipment needed, reviewing permits to confirm procedures and special needs, assisting in moving and positioning the patient, selecting x-rays for reference, inserting and removing Foley urinary bladder catheter, and draping the patient.
+ Support the Surgeon during the procedure or surgery by retracting tissue and organs, maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use of appropriate instrumentation, placing ties or ligatures, or applying chemical hemostatic agents, using electrocautery mono and bi-polar, clamping, and ligating and cutting tissue.
+ Maintain integrity of sterile field, closing all wound layers, inserting drainage tubes, applying wound dressing and assisting with resuscitation or any other events in the OR.
+ Perform any other duties or procedures incident to the surgical procedure deemed necessary and directed and supervised by the surgeon.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ Associate's Degree OR Certification as a First Assist and a minimum of two years' experience may offset the associate degree requirement if first assist certified is achieved prior to August 2021.
+ Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program but is not required to be certified by the NCCPA, hold a license to practice or be a graduate of an un-accredited surgical assistance program
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
+ Two years of perioperative practice in an acute care facility
