Description

The survey crew chief will be a member of the survey field crew personnel engaged in mapping and surveying activities for RP Constructors and Civil Engineers and Constructors. 


Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Learn to search legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain information about property boundaries in areas to be surveyed.
  • Learn to interpret and understand sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys.
  • Survey team member conducting surveys to establish legal boundaries for properties, based on plats, deeds and titles.
  • Perform geodetic measurements and process raw survey data to determine locations, elevations, and other characteristics of land and property features.
  • Record the results of surveys including locations, elevations, and other characteristics of land and property features.
  • Establish fixed points for use in making maps and plats, using geodetic and surveying
  • Coordinate findings with the work of engineering and architectural personnel, clients, and others concerned with the project.
  • Learn to plan and conduct ground surveys to establish baselines, elevations, and other similar control networks.
  • Draft/sketch various survey documents for review and approval of a professional land surveyor.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.
  • In time, having the ability to work independently and balance the workload to best accommodate demands of the job in excess of client expectations.
  • Learn to prepare preliminary maps, drawings, sketches, and tables from field notes.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from a Land Surveying/Geomatics program. (Preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • GPS and CAD experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work in adverse/extreme weather conditions. (Required)
  • Ability to move on foot through active construction sites and undeveloped ground.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds.

The mission of the Survey Crew Chief is to collect valuable field data and information that can be translated into digital deliverables for use in the design and construction of a project. A Survey Crew Chief will act as the field leader for a survey crew performing required field work tasks and assisting in the drafting of boundary, topography, ALTA, right of way, and construction surveys for public and private clients.


Requirements:


1. Provide field work direction and communicate to survey crew member(s) on means/methods to accomplish surveys for public and private clients.

2. Determine elevations and laying out stakes for mapmaking, construction, land, and other surveys.

3. Operate instrumentation for the collection or distribution of survey data (total station, data collector, level, GPS, UAS Systems).

4. Perform record research of public records, such as deeds and easements.

5. Transmit survey data to the proper files in the computer network and be able to acquire the data for field use.

6. Record field data readings in field book.

7. Mark points of measurement with elevation, station number, or other identifying marks.

8. Measure distance between survey points with steel or cloth tape or surveyor’s chain.

9. Establish survey stakes at designated points and specified elevation.

10. Cut and clear brush and trees from line of survey.

11. Read and understands plans and specifications.

12. Perform other duties as directed by Survey Coordinator.

13. Perform job specific quality system tasks as defined in quality manual.

14. Produce drawings and maps of specific locations, to be reviewed by the Survey Coordinator, for boundary, topography, right of way, and construction surveys for public and private clients.

15. Process a working knowledge of drafting programs (Microstation, InRoads, AutoCAD, ArcGIS).

As a survey crew/party chief, you will engage in diverse survey tasks across various projects, including construction staking, boundary surveys, topography surveys, and ALTA surveys. Working under the guidance of our professional land survey manager, you will apply your comprehensive understanding of field concepts, practices, and procedures to contribute to the success of the team.
This role also offers the opportunity to engage in project management responsibilities including project research, boundary calculations, and collaborate on project planning and coordination; enhancing your skills while ensuring the quality and precision of survey activities.

+ Strong communication skills
+ Ability to contribute and work well on a team
+ 4 years of experience working with a licensed surveyor
+ Experience with construction staking, boundary surveys, topography surveys, and ALTA surveys, is preferred
+ Valid driver's license with a good driving history
+ Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
+ The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner

Actual compensation will vary based on factors such as experience, qualifications, geographic location, skills, education, and internal equity.
Colorado Pay Range
$30-$35USD

**Overview**
Kimley-Horn is looking for aSurvey Party Chief to join our growing team in Greenwood Village, Colorado (CO). This role offers a unique blend offield and office work-supportingaerialandterrestrialLiDAR data capture, photogrammetry, and occasional conventional survey data collectionwhileassistingwith post processing and CAD draftingpreparinghigh-quality deliverablesfor our clients
**Responsibilities**
+ Operate drones and terrestrial scanning equipment for survey data collection, including photogrammetry, aerial and terrestrial LiDAR capture, registration, and data extraction (occasional travel may be required).
+ Assist in processing and managing point cloud and other survey datasets, ensuring accuracy and usability for project needs.
+ Assist in translating field data (points, sketches, photos, and reference maps) into comprehensive survey deliverables.
+ Collaborate closely with surveyors, engineers, and project teams to deliver high-quality, on-time survey products that support projects in land development, transportation, infrastructure, and more.
+ Assist in producing clear, detailed CAD drawings and survey exhibits (e.g., subdivision maps, ALTA surveys, topographic surveys) using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
+ Assist in researching boundary and easement title documents, perform boundary analysis, and prepare legal descriptions and exhibits for rights-of-way, easements, and acquisition parcels.
+ Perform additional duties as assigned in support of survey operations.
**Qualifications**
+ 3+ years of prior survey experience
+ Experience with conventional survey equipment a plus
+ Experience extracting LiDAR data is beneficial
+ Experience in CAD Survey Drafting preferred
+ FAA Part 107 certification or ability to obtain within 3 months
+ Strong communication and technical skills
+ Ability to work independently and in a team environment
+ Ability to work on multiple projects at one time
**Salary Range:**
+ $55,000 - $80,000
+ Eligible for Performance Based Bonus Contribution
