Position Summary  

The Tax Advisory and Research Consultant will serve in a dynamic, challenging and growth environment and will:  

  • Be comfortable using artificial intelligence (AI) tools and platforms and be able to demonstrate how they leverage AI in their tax research practice to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and strategic insight. 

  • Understand the firm’s programs and processes, especially with respect to advisory, review and planning software; legal research tools, such as Lexis Nexis; and technical tax research, tax advisory and drafting, such as Checkpoint, are essential.  

  • Participate in client meetings and assist in serving their needs. 

  • Provide experience with corporate, partnership, and international tax matters. The candidate should preferably have experience with, and interest in, the taxation of high-net-worth families, family offices and closely-held businesses.  

  • Specialize in tax and legal structures as they apply to LLCs, corporations, partnerships, trusts, tax-exempt entities and privately-held entities. 

  • Advise clients on a variety of tax issues including accounting for tax provisions, tax compliance, business restructuring, and tax controversy. 

  • Review basic to complex income tax returns and tax projections. 

  • Demonstrate advanced technical expertise, e.g., through advanced education and/or continuing education oriented toward an advanced skill set or industry expertise. 

  • Understand and be capable of introducing services to clients into other Talley service areas such as TLG, TCG, TCAS, Assurance, etc. 

 The Tax Advisory and Research Consultant will interact with all the firm’s service departments and the administration team. This position will eventually have direct client interaction throughout the year. 

Essential Functions of the Position  

Technical Skills  

  • Initially, demonstrate a solid educational foundation with a degree in accounting, an advanced degree in and knowledge of taxation, and an ability to understand accounting principles. 

  • Candidate must demonstrate experience with AI-assisted legal and tax research platforms such as Bloomberg BNA, Lexis Nexis, and GPT-based tools. They should be capable of critically evaluating AI-generated content, integrating it into technical memos, and using it to identify tax planning opportunities. 

  • Be able to review complex entity and individual tax returns, including at least some experience with multi-state, consolidated, foreign reporting, etc. 

  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of tax law and ability to provide client recommendations for possible tax-saving opportunities. 

  • Assist tax consulting personnel and tax managers in performing various tax strategy analysis and computations of benefits and impact of such strategies.   

  • Address government agency tax notifications, document requests and audit support. 

  • Ability to perform tax research; prepare technical tax memorandum; and communicate contents and concepts with clients and professional staff.  

Demonstrate experience with the elements of the following: 

  • Mergers and acquisitions. 

  • Corporate governance and business operations for relevant jurisdictions, i.e., California, Nevada and Delaware. 

  • Joint ventures and strategic relationships. 

  • Business reorganizations. 

  • Debt financing. 

Client Service  

  • Client interaction and liaison for various tax projects, including obtaining appropriate information and resolving tax-related problems and notices.

The International Corporate Tax Advisory competency (ICTA) is responsible for advising clients on international tax operations, including cross-border controversy, international policy advisory, international tax quantitative services, internal restructuring, and refinancing. The coordinated go-to market and service approach of ICTA is unmatched in the market. It will offer you significant learning and development within the transaction landscape as well as international cross-border transactions. **Your key responsibilities**
Depending on your unique skills and ambitions, you could be managing various responsibilities, from technical planning and advising to global project management. **Skills and attributes for success**
+ Identifying and answering complex domestic and international tax issues
+ Providing technical tax advice and planning services to a portfolio of projects
+ Building long-lasting relationships with our clients, developing your understanding of their unique needs and requirements
+ Building and leading a dedicated client service team, providing performance feedback, and guaranteeing your people always have the skills, tools, and opportunities they need to grow
+ Constantly developing your own knowledge, maintaining your status as a trusted advisor by monitoring emerging trends, technologies, and practices
+ Manage overall engagement, engagement economics and engagement teams across the EY global network; help provide growth and learning opportunities to junior professionals while providing clear and direct feedback on overall performance
**To qualify for the role, you must have**
+ A bachelor's degree and around five years of related work experience or a graduate degree and four years of related work experience
+ A US CPA license or US state bar membership
+ Tax due diligence, deal-structuring, and post-acquisition planning experience and/or inbound and outbound transaction consulting with international tax research, planning and compliance experience
+ Ability to succinctly and clearly communicate complex tax concepts to clients
+ Experience managing budgets, projects, and people
**Ideally, you'll also have**
+ Strong writing, research, analytical, communication and presentation skills
+ Ability to work in fast-paced professional services environment
+ Willingness and ability to travel when necessary

+ We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you'll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $116,200 to $12,900. The base salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is 139,400 to 242,000. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.
+ Join us in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 40-60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
+ Under our flexible vacation policy, you'll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances.
