The fellow will teach introductory courses in biology and R programming to first- and second-year undergraduate students, receive structured mentoring and professional development to prepare for a full-time faculty position at a teaching-intensive institution, receive training in inclusive pedagogy, support for research and grant writing, and have opportunities to engage in the academic, social, and cultural life of Oxford College.
We will consider applicants from a broad range of biological subfields, as long as the candidate has experience with data analysis in the R programming language. The successful candidate will teach both "Foundations of Modern Biology I" (which includes a lab and covers topics in cellular and molecular biology, genetics, biodiversity, and evolution) and "Statistical Computing I" (an applied introduction to data analysis in R that does not require any formal computer science background to teach). The latter course is housed in the Quantitative Theory and Methods (QTM) department. The teaching load for this position will be the equivalent of one lecture and two lab sections (Biology) in the fall and up to three lecture sections (QTM) in the spring. Structured support and mentoring will be provided for both courses by senior members of the departments.
The goal of the postdoctoral teaching fellow program is to support the mentoring of fellows and equip them with skills for a full-time faculty position at a teaching intensive institution. As such, the primary focus of this program is to support the pedagogical development of the fellow and the advancement of a research program is not required or expected. However, interested fellows will also have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate research students, collaborate on research projects with existing faculty, and/or conduct independent research. Logistical and financial support is available for these endeavors.
