Summary:

A Test Engineering Specialist is a flex position who receives assignments from their supervisor to work either Wiring or Testing on our machine tool products to meet production requirements. This is a 2nd shift position that offers a wide variety of responsibilities between wiring during the assembly process to testing during the machine checkout process. Position also offers an excellent opportunity for career progression within our organization for candidates who meet qualifications for Test Engineering and beyond.

Scope and Responsibilities:

Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Test

  • Perform machine checkout (MCO) on our machine tool products to ensure they are fully functional, achieves our high quality standards and meets our customer’s expectations.
  • Perform MCO efficiently to meet business goals to achieve actual hours that are less than the planned and to meet scheduling milestones.
  • Support other groups, as needed, by keeping machines operational after MCO through machine teardown and also, to support the Installation group for issues related to machine functionality.
  • Interpret electrical/mechanical prints, MCO procedures and vendor documentation in conjunction with a working knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems to properly setup the machine and to troubleshoot simple issues as necessary.
  • Commission automation controls to our machine tools and their accessories.
  • Support assembly floor, as needed, with operating unit test stands.
  • Provide Test Engineers with technical feedback pertaining to problems discovered during commissioning and setup of our machine tools and then support them to development long-term corrective actions to those problems.
  • Train assembly floor employees to operate our machine tools with the various automation controls, when requested.
  • Take occasional trips to the field to assist Installations.

Wiring

  • Perform a range of operations to install a variety of electrical components and purchased accessories to our machine tool products.
  • Interpret electrical/mechanical prints, assembly work instructions and vendor documentation to ensure proper electrical installation of components and purchased accessories.
  • Connect and remove temporary power as needed to our machine tool products.
  • Wire units and machine efficiently to meet business goals to achieve actual hours that are less than the planned and to meet scheduling milestones.
  • Develop and maintain written assembly work instructions and adhere to existing ones.
  • Comply with standard safety precautions and electrical codes.
  • Disassemble and/or disconnect any electrical connection to check, ship, rebuild, or replace various components.
  • Solder electrical connectors, components and circuit boards.
  • Document wiring correction in a manner that follows company practices.
  • Detect and report unusual conditions, code violations, or faulty material to supervision.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or 4 - 6 years related experience and/or training.

Skills Required:

  • High mechanical aptitude
  • Good understanding of electrical and wiring concepts
  • Reading and interrupting hydraulic and electrical schematics and mechanical prints
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products

• Experience designing and drafting with 2D CAD and 3D solid modeling software

• Experience with LabVIEW or other PC based data acquisition systems

• Experience with terminal soldering, crimping, and connector fabrication.

Job Summary
You will leverage your electrical wiring and assembly skills to build and modify test fixtures, harnesses, and automated test equipment. You will work closely with our test engineering team to translate designs into functional test solutions that ensure the quality of our products.

Primary Responsibilities
• Fixture & Equipment Assembly:
Build, wire, and assemble new test fixtures, harnesses, and test equipment from engineering schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.
• Reading & Interpretation: Accurately read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and wiring diagrams to ensure correct assembly.
• Wiring & Soldering: Perform point-to-point wiring, harness routing, and component installation. Conduct high-quality soldering and crimping of wires and connectors.
• Maintenance & Calibration: Perform routine maintenance, repair, and calibration of existing test fixtures and equipment.
• Collaboration: Work closely with electrical test engineers to provide feedback on designs, troubleshoot issues, and assist in validating new test equipment.
• Component Installation: Install and mount a wide variety of electrical components (e.g., terminal blocks, circuit breakers, fuses, relays, sensors) onto panels and enclosures.
• Quality & Safety: Conduct visual inspections and continuity checks to ensure the quality of your work. Adhere to all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work area.

Basic Qualifications
• Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Technical school certification or an associate degree in a related field is a strong plus.
• Experience: 2+ years of experience in electrical assembly, panel building, or a similar role, with direct experience in building test fixtures or equipment.

• Technical Skills:
o Proven ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
o Expertise with hand tools and power tools used in electrical assembly, including multimeters, soldering irons, and crimping tools.
o Strong understanding of electrical wiring principles and color codes.
• Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work in a deadline-driven environment.
• Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills for identifying and correcting wiring errors and assembly issues.

As a Test Engineering Intern, a typical day might include the following:

  • Evaluate new test technologies and methods.
  • Determine Design for Test (DFT) specifications and coordinate with engineering staff on new product design.
  • Design, develop, and maintain test strategies for new and existing products that meet corporate objectives.
  • Train production testing staff in function, design, and maintenance of all testing processes on the production floor.
  • Gather and analyze test data to improve test coverage and efficiencies.

  • You are currently a student pursuing a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, with one to two years engineering education completed.

  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.
  • Have background check results satisfactory to SEL.
  • Have negative drug test result(s).
