Job Description: Custodian Department: Maintenance Reports To: Building Principal & Custodial Supervisor Work Schedule: 40 hours per week minimum, Monday through Friday (8 hours daily), with the possibility of overtimeDay or Night GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and secure environment in assigned building(s), in accordance with established district policies, standards, and safety codes. The role is critical to ensuring that school facilities support an uninterrupted and effective educational program by eliminating distractions, obstacles, and safety concerns. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Perform general cleaning and janitorial duties in common areas of the building. Conduct minor repairs and maintenance, including replacing light fixtures and unclogging pipes. Clean and sanitize restrooms and cafeteria areas. Provide limited grounds maintenance, including mowing lawns, trimming hedges, and clearing snow from sidewalks. Ensure heating and cooling systems are functional and report any issues promptly. Maintain a clean and organized janitor's room, ensuring adequate inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies. Wash windows and ensure building cleanliness standards are met. Inspect the building for safety hazards and report concerns to the lead custodian, principal, or school resource officer. Perform other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of safety hazards and proper handling of cleaning and sanitizing solutions. Strong attention to detail and thoroughness in completing tasks. Ability to perform basic repairs and operate routine maintenance tools and equipment. Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment. Professional, polite, and courteous interactions with staff, students, parents, and visitors. WORKING CONDITIONS Primarily works indoors but may be required to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Exposure to moving mechanical equipment and occasional handling of toxic or caustic chemicals. Must meet deadlines under time constraints; noise levels are generally moderate. EQUIPMENT USED Manual cleaning tools (brooms, mops, dusters, vacuums, snow shovels). Mechanized equipment (floor waxing and buffing machines). Ladders for elevated work. Chemical cleaning agents (training on proper use will be provided). GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience in custodial work. Ability to operate and maintain various equipment and tools. Ability to work in environments with children and uphold health and safety standards. Knowledge of district policies, public relations, and the role of public education in the community. Strong interpersonal skills to foster positive working relationships. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS, CREDENTIALS, AND LICENSES High school diploma or GED required. Two years of custodial or equivalent experience preferred. Basic computer knowledge and understanding of building layouts, systems, and controls. Ability to read and interpret safety rules, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and effectively communicate with groups. Mathematical competency to perform basic calculations and interpret data. Ability to apply common-sense solutions to routine and complex problems. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach with arms, and communicate effectively. Frequently required to squat, stoop, kneel, and reach overhead. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 80 pounds occasionally. Visual and sensory requirements include near and distance vision, color perception, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
