Therapeutic Counselor

• Provide counseling to students in a school based, therapeutic environment using multiple forms of therapeutic approaches, in accordance with their IEP related service recommendations.

• Work with students to address depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, and problems with self-esteem.

• Provide family counseling and parental education as needed.

• Provide assessments in the areas of mental status, personality, behavioral response patterns, relationships, and family interactions.

• Work with IEP team and create benchmarks and objectives supporting the student across settings.

• Facilitate/co-facilitate counseling groups as needed.

• Participate in treatment planning with a interdisciplinary team.

• Consult with staff, educational stakeholders, family, etc. about treatment recommendations and progress.

• Submit progress notes, IEP goal updates, and short term objective updates indicating objectives, strategies, and outcomes obtained.

• Attend residential staff meetings and team meetings as scheduled and/or appropriate; attend discipline meeting as well as meetings with supervisor(s) as necessary.

• Ensure evaluation, progress, and discharge reports on each student are completed in a timely manner.

• Ensure adherence to accreditation standards and ethics of confidentiality.

• Provide appropriate supervision and in-house activities for students as needed.

Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in a Human Services field.

• Two years of relevant experience preferred.

• LCSW, LCPC or similar licensure required.

• Must pass DCFS background check.

• Self-motivated and detail-oriented with ability to multi-task.

• Ability to maintain composure and exercise sound judgment and discretion.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Exceptional communication skills with an ability to establish trust and rapport quickly.

• A good listener with an ability to empathize while still providing guidance.

Responsibilities of the Therapeutic Behavioral Specialist:
1. Provides 1:1 assessment, training and follow up in the consumers home and community as identified in their Mental Health and TBS assessments 2. Implements positive behavior programs for qualified clients in the community. 3. Assure compliance with safety and confidentiality standards. 4. Acts as a program monitor for assigned clients. Complete required forms and accountability documentation, incident reports, case notes, termination, client attendance, billing, and other required documentation. 5. Performs behavioral interventions as prescribed. 6. Assess and document client progress, performs quality control. 7. Maintains all assigned client case records. Participates in case reviews and goal planning. Schedule transportation, prepare required documentation, reporting. 8. Responsible for maintaining a professional relationship with consumers, parents, care providers, co-workers and appropriate others. Represents HOPE in the community. 9. Acts as advocate on behalf of clients served, providing intervention and consultation as needed. 10. Acts as a mandated abuse reporter. 11. Perform other duties, as assigned, to assure efficiency of program services.
Minimum Qualifications:
The Therapeutic Behavioral Specialist should possess a Bachelors degree in Psychology or its equivalent as approved by SCCMH.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the Therapeutic Behavioral Specialist:
1. Interest and ability to understand and relate to children with developmental/mental health disabilities and behavioral challenges. 2. Working knowledge of handling aggressive/assaultive behaviors. 3. Ability to relate in a positive and constructive manner with clients, their families, the community and staff members. 4. Ability to accept supervision and work cooperatively as a member of the counseling support team 5. Ability to observe, evaluate, document and communicate verbally and in writing, client performance and social behavior. 6. Knowledge and understanding of psychological and mental health disabilities, alternative communication systems and assistive technology. 7. Utilization of critical thinking skills in decision making situations, good organizational and record keeping skills. 8. Maintain valid CPR and First Aid certification. 9. Knowledge and commitment to the principles and concepts of normalization and a commitment to enhance community integration of adults with developmental disabilities 10. • Participating in initial consults and writing corresponding consult reports.
• Completing biopsychosocial assessments on clients.
• Reviewing past treatment records and contacting clinical providers.
• Coordinating and helping to complete a comprehensive consultation addressing the client's educational, vocational, recreational, and social needs.
• Clinical: defining what clinical services will be accessed and how frequently. Facilitating efficient communication between treatment team, client, and family coach.
• Educational: assistance in selecting a school program. Supporting a client's school plan, including class selection, connections, and school-based resources (i.e. tutoring and counseling).
• Vocational plan: assessment of vocational interests, short-term support for finding and keeping a job and long-term planning towards career goals.
• Recreational plan: discovery of clients' interests in cultural, sports-related, and artistic pursuits. Connections to appropriate resources.
• Social: developing skills to pursue healthy behaviors and assistance in cultivating a positive support network.
• Independent living skills: creation and monitoring of a budget, assistance with time management and other basic living skills as needed.
• Creating short and long-term client goal plans; daily documenting of progress.
• Meeting with client 1-5 times per week in the community or home settings to monitor client progress, with follow up calls as appropriate.
• Providing connections to endorse community resources, treatment options, peer counselors and AA companions as appropriate.
• Providing observed in-home drug testing and Soberlink monitoring if appropriate
• Emergency support, on-call availability, and client transportation as needed.
• Additional duties will be assigned as deemed appropriate.

• Experience supporting clients with trauma and substance use disorder.
• One year or more of direct client experience in behavioral health or related fields
• Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
• Ability to calmly, flexibly, and efficiently manage client crises as they arise
• Valid driver's license with safe driving record
• Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently
• Knowledge of mental health diagnoses and behavioral health treatments
• Comfort and quick learning curve with technology on day-to-day tasks (i.e. Microsoft Office, Salesforce)

• Experience working as a recovery coach, mental health clinician or therapeutic companion
• Experience working with high-net worth families
