The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of recreation programming, customer service, and administrative support for special needs populations for the county.
Examples of duties include:
- Organizing, instructing, and supervising assigned recreational activities for special needs populations, such as sports activities, Special Olympics, wheelchair sports, social events, parties, art classes, outings, and field trips; gathering supplies and equipment; verifying completion of required forms for each participant; teaching and facilitating classes, clinics, and skills; providing information and direction; and ensuring all activities comply with established rules, policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Ensuring care for and monitoring of special needs participants; assisting in transporting participants to and from events and activities; and monitoring and assisting with personal care needs, such as bathing, medication, etc.; driving a van and transporting athletes to and from competitions and events; must be able to get in the pool during summer camp months appropriate swim attire required.
- Performing customer service functions; providing information or assistance regarding services, activities, forms, procedures, fees, or other issues; responding to routine questions and complaints; researching problems and initiating problem resolution; and referring complaints/problems to appropriate personnel.
- Processing participant registrations; receiving requests for classes and activities; reviewing registration forms for accuracy and completeness; entering information into online database and calendars; collecting and recording fees; and maintaining related documentation.
- Monitoring inventory of materials and supplies; ensuring availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; and inspecting equipment, fields, and facilities for safety.
- Processing a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures; receiving and reviewing various documentation; reviewing, completing, processing, forwarding, or retaining as appropriate; preparing or completing various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiling data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintaining computerized and/or hardcopy records.
- Operating a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operating general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
- Communicating with supervisor, other county employees, outside agencies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications include: education and experience; licenses or certifications; and special requirements.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Knowledge of local government operations, parks and recreation related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
- Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.

Physical demands include exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Must be able to run with individuals during programs and ensure their safety while running.
Work environment is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.

- Attend, participate in and/or conduct internal staff development programs, obtain continuing education as required by Company policy and regulations. Maintain and enhance clinical practice skills.

- Current Cardiopulmonary Rescutiation certification is required.

The Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator position will primarily serve our Long-Term Care residents, but may assist in other areas of the campus on an as-needed basis. This position works to implement and lead life enrichment activities. A typical schedule of this position is Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm.
Responsibilities of the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator:
- Coordinates and implements group and individual activities such as exercise, crafts, birthday & holiday parties, history presentations, board games and much more!
- Creates and leads a fun and inviting environment for our residents that fosters creativity, enjoyment and companionship.
- Participates in resident outings to local Apple Orchards, Fishing Trips, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and local restaurants.
- Collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team to design and implement activity care plans that meet a resident's physical and psychosocial needs.
- Participate in resident care conferences with residents and their loved ones to communicate about a resident's care plan and participation in leisure activities.
Preferred Skills:
- Degree in a human services related field is preferred OR certification through National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP), National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (CTRS) or a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) program.
- 1-3 years' experience working with older adults, preferably in conducting and leading activities OR 1-3 years' experience working in a customer service related industry.
Required Skills:
- Ability to coordinate, develop and lead activities with residents.
- Ability to communicate with fellow co-workers, residents and families in an appropriate manner.
- Familiar with basic computer systems such as Microsoft Word & Microsoft Excel.
- Must have excellent time management and organizational skills.

Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes and coordinates recreation activities, functional leisure skills, and leisure education. Interviews the person served to assess capabilities/interests/barriers. Monitor progress and recommends changes modifications to program as required.
- Consult with physicians and other members of the rehabilitation team regarding therapeutic recreation goals for program referrals. Coordinate activities with staff/rehabilitation team and participate in care planning meetings.
- Communicate with community service organizations to develop resources for recreational programs. Act as liaison to outside community recreation/leisure avocation agencies.
- Design community reintegration activities to assist the person receiving services with their physical and cognitive needs during physical recreational/leisure activity. Assist the person receiving services in understanding their various needs and limitations and how to manage them during function.
- Provide training to the person receiving services and as appropriate, all others involved in that person's rehabilitation. Analyze and document the result of any training.
- Perform a thorough evaluation, assessing the needs of the person receiving services, and set measurable objectives that are formulated in conjunction with the rehabilitation team. Adjust treatment to achieve maximum results.
- Responsible to apply professional knowledge and skills in accordance with accepted standards of clinical practice, to facilitate problem resolutions, and thereby the achievement of individualized goals and outcomes for the person served.
- Report progress to the rehabilitation staff, person receiving services and family members.
- Observe/document and report changes in the condition of the person served to the Clinical Coordinator/designee, attending physician and other treatment team members as appropriate.
- Provide treatment progress and status documentation in accordance with the Plan of Treatment.
- Participate in the team process provide input and effective treatment strategies. Attend case conference and family educational meetings.
- Develop, teach and assess the plan of treatment. Guide the Rehabilitation Specialist/Certified Nursing Assistant in fulfillment of the plan. Use appropriate methods and tools in all teaching and training activities, including those associated with discharge.
- Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct in relation to information that is confidential in nature. Share information only when the recipient's right to access is clearly established and the sharing of such information is clearly in the best interest of the person served.
- Collect and document items necessary for the organization to complete a thorough and effective program evaluation and program improvement.
- Attend, participate in and/or conduct internal staff development programs, obtain continuing education as required by Company policy and regulations. Maintain and enhance clinical practice skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned in response to the person serviced, office and/or program needs.
- Current Cardiopulmonary Rescutiation certification is required.
- The candidate must successfully complete any/all required pre-employment evaluation test(s) per policy in each assigned area of practice.
- Good organizational and communication skills are needed.
- Ability to function with minimum supervision.
- Reliable transportation is required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation Therapy or the equivalent plus a minimum of two years therapeutic therapy experience is required.
- Knowledge of complex neurologic injury and orthopedic rehabilitation techniques generally required. Knowledge of therapeutic recreation program design and the ability to obtain National Thereaputic Recreational Specialist certification within one year of employment required. Maintain professional license and/or certification as required by the state in which the therapist practices. Effective communication skills also required.
