ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION
- Under general supervision and without technical guidance, other than engineering input, performs the most difficult development work. Plans, designs, constructs or repairs a wide variety of highly intricate and complicated tools, dies, jigs, gauges, fixtures, to extremely close tolerances; down to .0001"
- Constructs tools where no design is available.
- Selects allowances and devises mechanism detail.
- Does highly skilled tool fitting, adjusting, and timing.
- Performs any tool room machine operation including but not limited mills, lathes, grinders, profile grinders, heat treatment and annealing
- Works from complicated drawings and sketches.
- Uses advanced shop mathematics and all types of precision measuring instruments.
- Typical work products include multi-station progressive dies, intricate compound dies of irregular shape, sub-press dies for parts of delicate outline and complex index milling fixtures.
- Experience with cold heading tooling is a plus
- Willing to train a qualified candidate to assemble, construct and modify high speed & carbide header tooling.

Toolmaker performs repairs and engineering changes on molds and dies in the mold shop.
Role and Responsibilities1st Shift, 2nd Shift, Third Shift Available
1. Disassembly/Assembly of molds/dies.
2. Run ALL machine shop equipment related to tool and die industry (lathe, milling machine, surface grinder, TIG welder and various hand tools).
3. Ability to troubleshoot problems at the press.
4. Understanding of injection mold/press die process.
5. Read/Understand 2D and 3D drawing data related to molds/dies.

Skills and QualificationsEducation: Minimum - High School Diploma or GED required. Preferred- 2yr degree in Machine Tool Technology or Apprenticeship in Tool and Die. Journeyman's card in tool and die making or machining, with Deep Draw Experience also preferred.

Set up and operate a variety of machines to produce precision parts. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
Essential Duties and responsibilities:
- Troubleshoot die problems from observing defective parts or by observing dies operating in the presses.
- Troubleshoot weld fixture problems at the weld cell by observing defective weldments or by observing weldment operations and measurements.
- Be able to make setups as needed to rework non-conforming product for production requirements.
- Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, or grinders.
- Set up, adjust and operate all the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
- Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
- Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools. Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering and manufacturing needs.
- Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers, dial calipers, height gage, and dial indicator.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments.
- Qualification Requirements:
- Ability to follow instructions and a demonstrated attention to detail is required.
- Self-motivated to work independently with little or no supervision is required.
- Blueprint reading skills are required.
- Demonstrated ability to operate all tool room equipment (grinders, mills, lathes, hand air tools, manual tools) without assistance, as well hand tools and measurement tools.
- Applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data are required.
- Strong teamwork and oral/written communication skills are required.
- Good attendance and safety record is required.
Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED; plus, a Machine Tool Degree and or minimum 5 years' experience as a machinist in a manufacturing environment.
- Computer skills in Microsoft office and Cad/Cam is a plus.
Work Environment:
Regularly exposed to the manufacturing plant environment. Potential exposure may include, but is not limited to; solvents, dust, noise, and heat.
