Job Duties

- Analyzes technical problems and resolves in accordance with established laboratory policies.
- Reviews test results, quality control records, proficiency testing results and preventative maintenance records.
- Ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems and Quality Assurance deviate from established performance specifications.
- Collaborates the planning of capital purchases and leases with the appropriate section Doctoral Director and Operations Director.
- Participates with the Director and other system colleagues in the development of new testing, validation and evaluation of new equipment, reagents, instrumentation and technologies.
- Maintains a working knowledge of applicable regulatory standards and ensures that compliance of standards is maintained.
- Participates in the analysis of cost for materials and negotiation of contracts to obtain favorable prices.
- Responsible for section purchasing, receiving, and inventory management to reduce costs.
- Accepts responsibility for effective cost accounting and cost management.
- Maintains adequate supply inventory.
- Participates in and coordinates the development of policy and procedure manuals with doctoral director and system colleagues.
- Assures timely and regular review of procedure manuals.
- Provides orientation to all new employees and identifies training needs and ensures that employees receive appropriate in-service training and education for their job responsibilities.
- Continually evaluates monitors and documents the performance of competency of each employee.
- Participates in annual performance appraisals.
- Collaborates with their specialty specific colleagues at other lab locations to assure standardization system-wide.

**Job Summary**
The Technical Service Specialist is responsible for performing preventive maintenance and diagnostic instrument repairs on UPC-MS/MS instrumentation and robotic liquid handlers. The instrument specialist works collaboratively within a decentralized group sharing responsibilities for on-site instrumentation as well as remote support responsibilities. The instrument group works in close collaboration with the MedTox Research and Development department. The position also includes project-based process improvement assignments.
**Work Schedule:** 9:00am - 5:30pm Tuesday through Saturday. Some overtime as needed.
**Qualifications:**
+ Minimum of 4 years of experience in a laboratory setting including some instrumental analysis, **specifically LC-MS** .
+ Preferred proficiency in Analyst, Sciex OS and Waters Acquity software.Proven mechanical skills.
+ Strong understanding of instrumental analysis and ability to apply that understanding to the diagnosis of instrumental errors
+ Proven ability to balance and prioritize competing tasks while working independently.
+ Strong interpersonal communication and listening skills; ability to communicate in an effective and timely manner.
+ Excellent problem-solving skills.
**Key Responsibilities:**
+ Maintain, calibrate, and clean instrumentation; perform scheduled/routine maintenance and critical function checks on the following analytical equipment: Waters Acquity UHPLC systems, Sciex triple quadrupole mass spectrometers, and Hamilton STAR robotic liquid handlers.
+ Diagnose and repair issues occurring in the above listed equipment; recognize significant changes in instrument function; troubleshoot as indicated.
+ Recognize when to contact external service vendors and work collaboratively to resolve issues quickly and efficiently to reduce overall down time of testing and/or instrument production.
+ Maintain accurate records and documentation for all laboratory equipment including, but not limited to, maintenance logs and instrument logs.
+ Schedule preventative maintenance and repairs internally and with external service vendors.
+ Consult with laboratory staff to ascertain that equipment functions properly and safely.
+ Demonstrate and explain correct operation of equipment to laboratory personnel
+ Provide troubleshooting assistance to laboratory personnel
