Primary Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Performs various engineering related calculations and analyses in the application of the basic design criteria necessary to complete assigned projects.
  • Support the development of traffic projections, transportation analysis, and/or transportation planning evaluations using various traffic analysis software programs. 
  • Assists the lead engineer or manager in estimating and tracking project costs.
  • Coordinates the preparation of data tabulation/evaluation and reports and assists in report production and development of engineering designs and specifications.
  • Provide quality control/quality assurance consistent with Company and Department standards and the requirements of our clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Performs field assignments including site inspections and conducting field assessments of properties.
  • Maintains field notes and photo documentation as required.
  • Assists with client contact and communication pertaining to specific tasks.


RequirementsEducation: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and E.I. certificate in the state where this person’s work is primarily performed or an Associate’s Degree or Technical Certification in a related field.

Experience:
Zero - four years of overall and progressively responsible experience with public and private sector projects, ideally in the A/E/C industry.

Skills

  • Proficient in Synchro/SimTraffic and HCS.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
  • Working knowledge of the procedures to execute a sound and efficient project, with the goal of developing good project management techniques.
  • Effective verbal communication skills with colleagues, vendors, and subcontractors. Must be able to explain scopes of work and obtain quotes from vendors.
  • Effective organizational skills to maintain deliverables, analytical results, and field notes in project files.
  • Effective writing skills to assist with report writing, proposal preparation, and engineering/construction cost estimates.

Working closely with our Southern California Engineering Team, the Civil Engineer will work on a wide variety of Public Works and Transportation projects throughout the Southern California region. Our team focuses on a multitude of projects including, but not limited to roadway design and rehabilitation, ADA related improvements, Active Transportation Projects, and other traditional public improvement projects such as signing and striping, traffic signals and street lighting. The work will consist of developing plan and specification packages from engineering criteria, notes, sketches, and/or detailed drawings to ensure each design meets what the client is looking for.

  • You will use technical manuals to ensure compliance with company policies and applicable standards

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
  • 5-10 years of experience drafting/preparing engineering drawings is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer OR Traffic Engineer in California preferred
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD drafting is preferred
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D modeling is preferred

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $130,000. This will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.

Provides technical assistance and guidance for the analysis, improvement, planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets and highways, their networks, adjacent land uses, and interaction with other modes of transportation and their terminals. Your Impact

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, maps, technical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.

  • Perform professional traffic engineering work and assist with conducting investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.

  • Participate in incorporating advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards.

  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out roadways, establishing reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.

  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigation, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way and the driver is provided with all of the necessary information and safety metrics to help ensure that their driving experience is safe and efficient.

  • Conduct traffic counts for roadways and intersections to determine the volume of traffic, where the traffic is going to and from, and the type of traffic on the roadway.

  • Takes a second look at safety features on the road, recommending traffic safety enhancement projects on the basis of respective studies.

  • Determine appropriate signage, signals, and pavement markings along a new or existing road.

  • Investigate accident data and determines if changes can be made to roadways or intersections to make it safer for all who use the roads.

  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.

  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.

  • Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.

  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.

  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.

  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during field/site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level risk mitigation activities.

  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).

  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.

  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior traffic design experience.

  • Engineer in Training Certification.

  • Knowledge with DOT advisory circulars and procedures.

  • Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.

  • Experience with roadway planning, design, and construction management; including project involvement in a variety of infrastructure projects, rehabilitation and construction of pavement, navigational aids, grading design, and safety management.

  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.

  • Knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.

  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microstation, and other applicable design software packages.

The successful candidate will be a technical leader in traffic engineering and be required to engage in business development activities including proposal writing as well as fostering existing and developing new market opportunities. Responsibilities also include managing and designing a variety of traffic related projects and services. Established client relationships are also expected.

The successful candidate will be well-versed across the traffic engineering discipline with demonstrated traffic studies, design, and project management experience in traffic planning, analysis, and design. The successful candidate will be expected to effectively oversee and mentor staff and perform, coordinate, and manage a variety of traffic related engineering projects or task assignments including but not limited to traffic signal plans, signing and pavement marking plans, crash analysis, planning studies, traffic analysis and studies and maintenance of traffic plans. To be successful in this role, you must:

  • Have a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Have awareness of applicable federal, state and local codes, criteria, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Possess basic knowledge of production software.
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision as well as within a collaborative team environment and the willingness to work with different teams to meet project deadlines.
  • Have a passion for engineering and a willingness to grow and learn.
  • Possess solid oral and written communication skills and have the ability to effectively interact with and build strong relationships with clients, customers, contractors, team members, and other key stakeholders.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office software 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • EIT with 0-3 years of experience
  • Coursework and/or recent project experience that includes Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning, Traffic Engineering, and/or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with traffic analysis tools (HCS, Synchro, and Sidra) and traffic simulation modeling (TransModeler and VISSIM)
  • Previous internship experience
  • Exposure to MicroStation or CAD software
