Position Summary:

The Surveyor is responsible for all field layout and as-builts on assigned projects. Work conditions include walking long distances while carrying up to 40 pounds of equipment and working in all weather conditions for 8-10 hours a day.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate all types of survey equipment including GPS and SCS900 software, Total Station, and Level.
  • Perform site setup activities; i.e. site calibration, level runs, control checks.
  • Perform all layout calculations in data collector; i.e. Station/Offset, Distances, Grading.
  • Keep detailed field notes.
  • Work independently when performing field layout.
  • Transfer files between field and office.
  • Work directly with the Project Managers and Superintendents regarding initial project layout requirements, means and methods of establishing project survey control, and field reporting.
  • Utilize Trimble survey equipment and software including GPS, Robotic Total Stations, and manage Machine Control equipment
  • Software used includes SCS900, Trimble Access, and Trimble Business Center.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, construction related college degree preferred.
  • 7- 10 years of construction related experience required
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of survey grade GPS and SCS900 software as well as other survey equipment.
  • Basic CAD skills; i.e. Business Center, Carlson, Civil 3D, MicroStation, Open Roads.

Under general supervision, performs detailed field surveys at assigned site.

Performs technical work performing a variety of surveying and civil engineering tasks for County roads, bridges, construction sites, maintenance projects, and related work as apparent or assigned. Essential Functions

Performs the layout and staking of engineering and construction projects.

Prepares data files from CAD files and project plans for use in surveying and staking operations.

Operates specialized survey and construction layout equipment such as global positioning systems, total station instruments, data collectors, levels, pipe lasers, horizontal and slope lasers, prisms, chains, plum-bobs, rods, and computers.

Prepares a variety of engineering drawings for construction projects using computer aided drafting (CAD) software.

Collects data representing existing boundary, topography, and built environment and other features for use in project design for various County departments

Performs material take off (MTO) on County construction and maintenance projects; requests material bids as directed.

Provides technical assistance to department crews for construction and maintenance projects; interprets various drawings, maps and plats as needed or required.

Trains a variety of personnel in established work methodology as necessary.

May assist with seasonal or disaster related issues from flooding and windstorms, snow removal, ice control, etc.

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent service.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of surveying and civil engineering and construction practices, procedures and techniques; thorough knowledge of land survey nomenclature and symbols; general knowledge of maps and records; ability to operate Computer Aided Design (CAD) equipment: civil engineering and surveying software programs; ability to research land records; ability to perform precise survey work and produce field notes; ability to understand and work from oral and written instructions and sketches; ability to work out of doors under varying weather conditions; skill in the use of survey instruments; skill in the use and application of software relating to engineering and surveying needs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience

Associates/Technical degree with coursework in land surveying, civil engineering, or related field. Extensive experience in construction and land surveying applications, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Performs minor adjustments on surveying instruments to maintain accuracy.
  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of federal and local surveying laws; rules, regulations, and county ordinances; and policies, procedures, and best practices relative to land surveying.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent mathematical skills to conduct land survey analysis.
  • Thorough understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of land surveying.
  • Thorough understanding of federal and state laws related to land surveying and subdivision of land.
  • Proficient with computerized mapping technologies and surveying instruments, and the computer applications and software used to process field data.
  • Must be familiar with utilizing total stations surveying equipment ; Trimble brand experience preferred
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying or similar field required.
  • Licensure by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) or comparable certification required.
Physical Demands:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

What You Will Do

Some core responsibilities for a Surveyor include:

  • Measure distances and angles between points on, above, and below the Earth's surface
  • Use known reference points to determine the exact location of important features
  • Look for evidence of previous boundaries to determine where boundary lines are located
  • Record the results of surveying and verify the accuracy of the data
  • Read and interpret schematic/blueprints

We expect all field employees to:

  • Actively participate in a strong safety culture
  • Recognize safety hazards and risks
  • Participate in onsite safety meetings
  • Follow OPD and client safety policies and procedures
  • Be aware of changing conditions on an active jobsite
  • Be on time to the jobsite each day ready for work
  • Display a positive attitude and be able to work in a team environment
  • High attention to detail to avoid reworks and errors

Some physical demands of being a Surveyor include:

  • Capable of working in outdoor weather and environmental conditions including extreme heat and humidity, extreme cold, and high elevations.
  • Lifting and carrying awkward objects up to 60 lbs
  • Standing for extended periods of time up to 11 hours per day.
  • Moving the entire body. Considerable use of arms, legs, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, crawling, twisting, reaching, and bending on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to work on elevated platforms and maintain balance when stepping on narrow platforms such as beams and pipes. Must be able to perform these activities while wearing an approved full-body harness and lanyard.
  • Use hands to handle, control, and feel objects and/or tools

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • At least 2 years of experience as a Surveyor in a construction environment
  • Must be able to read and understand civil, structural, and pipe drawings
  • Travel is a must with extended periods away from home in remote areas at times
  • Must be willing and able to attend all mandatory safety meetings
  • Must be able to work shifts up to 12 hours per day and 7 days per week
  • Must be able to meet all physical demands of the jobs

What Will Put You Ahead

  • 4 or more years of experience as Surveyor
  • Previous experience in a gas plant construction environment
  • Valid Surveyor License
