Job Summary
The Department of Fisheries & Wildlife invites applications for two full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate positions. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
The Research Associate will have a research focus on molecular ecology, including data collection and generation, writing proposals, analyzing data, leading research papers, ordering and maintenance of equipment and supplies, and grant reporting. The Research Associate will implement high performance computing, bioinformatics, and contributing to the mentoring and advising of graduate students in collaboration with supervisor Dr. Taal Levi.
The incumbent will oversee multiple projects involving fish and wildlife research and monitoring. They will be responsible for proper dissemination of results including presentations to scientific and public groups, reports to funding agencies, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. The incumbent will be expected to coordinate with graduate students, undergraduate research assistants, and interns to implement proper protocols for each project.

FWCS is an academic unit that reports to the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Department is composed of approximately 300 staff, including academic faculty, research assistants, classified staff, graduate students, and temporary staff. Over $8 million of externally funded grants and contracts are received each year in support of science focused on basic ecological research, conservation, and sustainable use of fish and wildlife and their habitats. The Department is the largest in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with over 1000 students in 8 degree and certificate programs, including one Bachelor of Science degree, five graduate degrees, and two graduate certificates.

Key Responsibilities
80% Research
Design and carry out existing research using molecular and computational methods. Read and interpret current literature in modeling techniques to implement the best practices. Will conduct/produce independent research. Will contribute to graduate student advising and mentoring.
10% Data Management and Analysis
Organize and manage data collected from field sites, including analysis of data and interpretation of results. Contribute to scholarly findings through authorship/co-authorship in reports and peer-reviewed publications.
10% Personnel Management
Train interns and undergraduate researchers in proper laboratory protocols, including DNA extraction and amplification and other molecular methods.
What You Will Need
PhD Degree in ecology, wildlife biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, genetics or similar.
Previous lab experience in DNA extraction, PCR , real-time PCR , and high-throughput DNA sequencing.
Experience with development of assays including qPCR, metabarcoding, SNP genotyping (i.e. GT-Seq).
Experience working on UNIX -based computational infrastructure for bioinformatics analyses.
Commitment to working professionally with people from all backgrounds

The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Timberland Conservation and Wildfire Resiliency Program is seeking a motivated professional to work as an Environmental Scientist reviewing and evaluating Timber Harvest Plans and Timber Emergencies and Exemptions by analyzing consequences of proposed activities, attending pre-harvest inspections, preparing written inspection reports and recommendations for the conservation of fish and wildlife resources, assessing the application of law, regulation and policy, conducting listed and sensitive species consultations, and preparing any related Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreements and Incidental Take Permits in the Bay Delta Region.
The incumbent works in close collaboration with other Environmental Scientists and Senior Environmental Scientists, and with other state agencies as part of a interdisciplinary review team. Under the close supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor) the incumbent represents the region and may act as the staff lead and may provide consultative advice when working with applicants, local, state and federal agencies, stakeholders, and the general public. Public contacts made in the course of this work are sensitive and involve a wide variety of special interest groups.
Performance of specified activities will require an in-depth knowledge of administrative procedures, Department policies, applicable environmental laws and regulations, and ecological principles to protect fish and wildlife resources. Strong written and oral communication skills are necessary. Problem-solving, organizational skills and a positive attitude towards teamwork are essential. Fieldwork in rugged terrain is required.
