Responsibilities
Assesses each patient via chart review and consults with surgeon to design and assemble the proper extracorporeal circuit; primes, recirculates, and tests the extracorporeal circuit prior to initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass; initiates, continuously assesses, and manipulates the operation of the heart lung bypass machine to maintain the patient's physiologic parameters within normal limits during cardiopulmonary bypass; administers blood products/drugs/pharmacological agents as required to maintain the patient' s physiological status within normal limit s via heart lung machine directed by surgeon/anesthesia provider; obtains blood specimens for blood gas and anticoagulation analysis and interprets their results; disassembles and cleans the perfusion equipment; directs and/or assists the set-up, troubleshooting, testing and operation of the physiologic monitoring instrumentation; assembles, operates, and maintains other related extracorporeal equipment used in surgery and intensive ca re units (i.e. cell saver, intra-aortic balloon pump, ventricular assist devices); assists with the care, maintenance and inventory of departmental equipment and supplies; acts as an instructor for all scheduled clinical rotations of students enrolled at the University of South Alabama and other approved academic institutions; orients new personnel as assigned; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to digital, voice and overhead pages; maintains accurate and complete records by completing Cardiopulmonary Bypass record, Auto transfusion record; Balloon Pump record; Surgical Report record, and patient charges; files and maintains reports, database and records; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in a science related field or Bachelor's degree in Perfusion, and successful completion from an accredited Perfusion program required. Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion required, or attainment within two years of employment. Candidates must demonstrate good interpersonal skills and communication skills necessary to interact professionally with surgeons, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members. Candidates should also be self-motivated and value team collaboration, professional development, and maintain a diligent work ethic.

Qualifications

- 1 year of experience as a Surgical Technologist - Preferred
- Basic Life Support/CPR certification within 6 months - Required
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) - Preferred
