**Purpose:**
The CRNA provides anesthetic care for all types of patients in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and under the standards of the Department of Anesthesiology and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. The CRNA administers anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery, monitors the patient's physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents and informs the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition that potentially threatens the safety or care of the patient.
**Responsibilities:**
+ Assumes responsibility and is accountable for controlled substances according to department and hospital policy and State and federal guidelines.
+ Assists with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs, GRNAs, and SRNAs in the clinical area.
+ Administers anesthesia and anesthesia-related care in four general categories: (1) pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation; (2) anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emergence, (3) post-anesthesia care, and (4) peri-anesthesia clinical support functions.
+ Performs according to established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. Review appropriate documentation for informed consent and identify appropriate surgical site with operating room staff and surgeon in accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance standards. Participates in the Quality Improvement (QI) process through case documentation, incident reporting, evaluation, education, and implementation of the QI plan.
+ Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia education program required.
+ Knowledgeable regarding controlled substance policies in accordance with Federal and State laws required. **Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**
+ Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required.
+ Board Certified, Recertified or eligible by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists required.
+ CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
+ AHA-approved ACLS/PALS certifications as required by institution of employ upon hire.
+ ACLS and PALS required within 90 days of hire or transfer

The Senior Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of nursing care. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Senior Professional Staff Nurse encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Senior Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.

Responsibilities:

* Provides direct and indirect patient care in the peri-operative setting.
* Preparing the operating room by setting up sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies while ensuring that all necessary tools and medications are available and sterile.
* Creates a caring and compassionate experience for patients' visitors, and colleagues
* Practices solid communication skills with team members and can articulate changes in the patient condition while contributing recommendations to the plan of care.
* Maintaining appropriate state of the unit by stocking, organizing, and cleaning areas as per regulatory requirements.
* Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
* The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
* They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
* Minimum 2 years experience. BSN preferred.
* Must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level. Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status. ,UPMC approved nursing certification preferred. Annual completion of a professional contributions selected from department, hospital, or system goals, and approved by your Unit Director OR certification and 1 professional contribution selected from department, hospital, or system goals, and approved by your Unit Director as set forth through UPMC's My Nursing Career Ladder.
* Certification not required if Master's in nursing or DNP is held. Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
* Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
* Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state. UPMC approved nursing certification preferred. Annual completion of a professional contributions selected from department, hospital, or system goals, and approved by your Unit Director OR certification and 1 professional contribution selected from department, hospital, or system goals, and approved by your Unit Director as set forth through UPMC's My Nursing Career Ladder. Certification not required if Master's in nursing or DNP is held. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.


* Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
* Registered Nurse (RN)
* Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
* Act 33 with renewal
* Act 34 with renewal
* Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
* Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
