Job Description

The Utilities Engineer is responsible for the design, operational and maintenance support in the following utility equipment systems:

Clean Utilities (Clean Steam, Purified Water, WFI and RO Systems), HVAC Systems, Boilers, Co-Generation, Compressed/Process Air, Process Chillers and Ammonia Refrigeration Process, Alcohol Distillation and Recovery Process, Process Gases, Natural Gas, Bulk Chemical Distribution, Electrical Distribution, Fire Protection, Solvent Gas Detection systems, Water, Cooling towers and Waste Treatment systems for the Kankakee facility.

This role will support the site infrastructure fire alarm and protection systems, electrical and control systems, and the solvent gas detection and monitoring systems.

This individual will work closely with a cross-functional team to meet the needs of the groups they support.

  • Role that this position reports to:  Sr. Manager, Water Operations

Responsibilities:

1. Technical lead accountable for the operational improvement of the utility systems based upon industry trends and emerging technologies:  

  • Responsible for compliance and operational improvement of equipment systems
  • Provide engineering support to address operational / compliance issues and to ensure equipment is maintained at a level required to provide high reliability maximizing useful life
  • Implement measures to improve equipment that support utility operations  
  • Provide support in all matters pertaining to engineering, operations and maintenance of the equipment systems
  • Provide technical expertise and industry best practices
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts to resolve equipment and operational problems and ensure problem solving techniques are appropriately utilized
  • Prepares User Requirements Specifications (URS), Risk Assessments, Safety Assessments and participates in validation activities including review of IQ/OQ protocols, executions and summary reports.
  • Provide technical support to operations, maintenance, manufacturing, automation, quality assurance, validation, reliability engineering and project engineering.
  • Support the planning and execution of activities by working in cross-functional teams assisting in driving projects to completion to meet timeline and budget objectives
  • Manage system documentation including creation, review, updates, and approval of technical specifications, operating procedures, and system drawings.

2. Accountable for the Utility Reliability Program:

  • Execute the maintenance strategy for new and modified equipment
  • Management of CMMS data integrity and execution of Reliability Centered Maintenance Improvements
  • Develop preventative maintenance procedures for utility systems in collaboration with the Reliability Engineering department ensuring maintenance programs are implemented
  • Continuous Improvement of maintenance PM’s, BOM’s and Spare Parts
  • Review and lead utility equipment replacement as part of the life cycle improvement process and continuous improvement initiative planning.
  • Oversees reconditioning of the equipment to restore to like-new condition
  • Performs upgrades to improve safety, operational performance, and extend operational life
  • Collaborates with local and global partners to develop asset management plan that includes capital requests

3. Manage and monitor KPI’s:

  • Ensure compliance with site and global indicators
  • Measure and ensure compliant performance in Safety, Quality and Reliability
  • Demonstrate success of preventative maintenance improvements through performance reports, dashboards and metrics
  • Utilize control systems to monitor, trend and verify equipment performance and downtime

4. Ensure cGMP compliance of all utility systems to meet regulatory compliance:

  • Equipment is maintained at a level required to provide high reliability maximizing useful life
  • Review environmental monitoring and laboratory sample release test results
  • Manage deviations, investigations (CAPA’s and OOT’s) with on-time closure
  • Safely resolve process problems, improve efficiency, reduce waste, and maximize uptime production
  • Execute root cause analysis around equipment and operational events, owning change controls, investigations
  • Lead investigations as the subject matter expert providing technical expertise for all phases associated with the operation and troubleshooting of the utility systems
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of the utility drawings, flow diagrams and Standard Operational documents.
  • Perform utility inspections for quality assurance on a periodic basis and initiate any procedures necessary to resolve problems
  • Responsible for utility inspections (GEMBA’s/audits) for quality assurance on a periodic basis.
  • Responsible to ensure training, deviations and investigations related to utility systems have on-time closure and KPI performance metrics are met
  • Responsible for change control activities, the implementation of CAPA items, quality investigations and determine/implement long lasting corrective actions and preventative measures.

5. Required to support all scheduled utility system shutdowns, tie-ins and system startup.

6. Demonstrate continuous improvement with respect to increasing job knowledge and proficiency related to biopharmaceutical industry engineering best practices and technologies, as well as technical understanding/problem solving capability.

7. Complies with requirements from CSL Behring’s Safety Program, including Health and Safety mandates and OSHA requirements.

8. Completes any other duties/responsibilities assigned by senior management.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the fire protection, alarm and control system.
  • Maintain accurate records of fire safety inspections, testing fire protection systems, maintenance, and repairs. 
  • Support Fire department audits.
  • Interpret and apply applicable NFPA Standards to the system design/layout.
  • Ensure fire systems are compliant with relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards inclusive of fire hazard classifications, classification of occupancy, partition/separations requirements and means of egress provisions.
  • Responsible to support electrical engineering assigned duties.
  • Create plans, perform equipment selection, load calculations and power system studies.
  • Periodically review and update the Short Circuit Coordination Study.
  • Performs data evaluation, design support, assist with reviewing electrical single lines, electrical plans, electrical control panel drawings, electrical equipment (pumps, motors, vfd’s, etc) for the utility plant.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or B.S. degree in an Engineering related filed.

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience and a B.S.

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience and a M.S.

  • Must possess basic knowledge of core principles in various engineering disciplines
  • Experience with architectural, MEP and P&ID drawings preferably in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Experience interpreting electrical and control drawings.
  • Knowledgeable of electrical design standards, IEEE, building code requirements, NFPA and OSHA life safety regulations to design, safety and maintenance.
  • Working experience with electrical power distribution at 138kV, 15kV and 480v.
  • Experience in fire alarm and smoke control systems.
  • Knowledge of utility and mechanical systems (pumps, valves, materials).
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage contractors, while interfacing with multiple departments, working with internal customers to manage projects.
  • Functional knowledge of cGMPs and manufacturing operations in FDA regulated facility
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

The expected base salary range for this position at hiring is $96,000 - $121,000. Please note this salary range reflects the minimum and maximum base pay that CSL expects to pay for this position at the listed location as of the time of this posting. Individual base salary for a successful candidate is determined by qualifications, skill level, experience, competencies and other relevant factors. In addition to base salary, total compensation for this role may also include incentive compensation and equity.

Our Georgia-Pacific facilities in Green Bay, WI , are looking for motivated individuals to join our team as a Utilities Technician at our Broadway location. A successful candidate will be detail-oriented and thrive in a team-oriented environment. Utilities Technicians work a rotating 12-hour shift that includes days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime hours.

The wage potential for this role is $25-40/HR and will be determined based on experience . A $3.00/hour shift premium will be paid out for all night-shift hours worked (6:00 PM - 6:00 AM).

Additional Benefits to consider:

  • Full benefits package that begins at the first of the month following the start date
  • Two (2) weeks of vacation prorated for the first year

ROLE SUMMARY:

At the Baldwinsville Brewery, the Utilities Technician is a critical role responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of Brewery wide industrial utility supply systems such as ammonia refrigeration systems; glycol storage and distribution system, industrial HVAC system using lithium chloride dehumidification, compressed air systems;  process and potable water systems, chlorine and chlorine dioxide disinfection system, steam generation, and CO2 collection, liquefaction, vaporization, and distribution.  Technicians routinely monitor, analyze, troubleshoot and maintain all system.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Operate Brewery Utilities systems including: steam, CO2 collection, ammonia refrigeration and dehumidification, compressed air and incoming water & waste water treatment.
  • Perform boiler water and cooling tower water chemical treatment.
  • Responsible for process management, basic maintenance tasks, lubrication, housekeeping, and sanitation.
  • Document and respond to all activities that occur during shift of responsibility.
  • Respond to customer department requests for assistance with Utility system optimization and/or isolation.
  • Active and certified participant in the brewery's HAZWOPER emergency response team.  Willingness to don respirator and PPE up to OSHA level A as required.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Applicants should be familiar with automated process control systems.
  • Experience in the following areas is desired: water tube medium pressure boilers; large-scale ammonia refrigeration systems; compressed air systems; cooling tower systems; CO2 gas collection and liquefaction systems.

Utilities Pipelayer

The utilities pipelayer is responsible for providing physical labor at construction project sites. May operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, and clean up rubble, debris, and other waste materials. May assist other craft workers.

A Day in the Life
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor at construction project sites.
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Bring any concerns to the attention of the project Foreman, Superintendent, General Superintendent, Safety Director or management.
  • Load and unload trucks and haul and hoist materials.
  • Maintain a clean job site at all times. Pick up all material, tools, and small equipment and secure job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Material handling and storage.
  • Assist in identifying and ensuring that any underground and overhead utilities have been located/exposed prior to excavating.
  • Review trenching requirements with Superintendent and ensure any required protection is available.
  • Keep project Foreman, Superintendent, or General Superintendent informed of known actions, written or verbal, which may affect the ability to successfully perform tasks at construction project sites or adversely affect Company operations.
  • Other projects or duties as assigned by management.
What You'll Need
  • High school diploma or equivalent, six to twelve months of construction experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, and demonstrated knowledge of applicable safety precautions and procedures.
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings (plans/blueprints).
  • Ability to read and comprehend grade stakes. Must be able to calculate grades.
  • Experience setting up and utilizing a pipe laser.
  • Experience using an eye-level (transit).
  • Knowledge and ability to work with equipment, materials, and supplies found in construction work. Ability to follow proper use and safety guidelines at all times.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate plant utilities in a safe and environmentally responsible manner
  • Run and monitor plant boilers and utilities including water testing
  • Monitor and maintain fire protection system
  • Monitor and manage fuel inventory including wood chips, LP gas and diesel fuel
  • Utilize both, manual and automated control systems to monitor and adjust utilities as needed to maintain proper operation
