Position Description
The Utility Engineering Technician 1 position will be responsible for the investigation and/or inspection duties in the Engineering, Development Services and/or Stormwater divisions at Metro Water Services.
Employees at Metro Water Services work around the clock to supply, treat, manage, and protect our water resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of all who live, work and play in our community. Our dedicated, diverse workforce provides high quality drinking water and the best in wastewater treatment, storm water management, and waste collection services for our customers in the Nashville-Davidson County area. Our employees work together to service more than 210,000 water and 216,000 sewer accounts along with over 150,000 curbside waste collection customers. Typical Duties
Stormwater/Construction
- Perform inspections of active stormwater construction projects performed by contractors.
- Prepare daily logs documenting construction activities.
- Effectively communicate with property owners and businesses regarding projects.
- Coordinate with internal staff, engineering consultants, and contractors to resolve issues.
- Verify pay requests, change orders, and other construction related documentation.
- Investigate drainage complaints from residents and businesses.
- Interview residents and business owners regarding their drainage complaints.
- Document on maps the flow of overland water, ditches, pipes, inlets, etc. related to the drainage system.
- Determine work needed to resolve drainage issues impacting the right of way.
- Communicate to residents and business owners the extent of their issue and steps to be taken to resolve it.
- Perform all inspections associated with Metro Grading Permit (GP) sites.
- Perform all inspections on non GP-related matters (complaint investigation, etc.).
- Perform all enforcement duties associated with GP and non GP sites.
- Document and following up with inspections, complaints, and enforcements.
- Prepare for and facilitating pre-construction meetings.
- Perform other special projects and investigations as needed.
- Perform inspection of active water and sewer construction projects assuring the are built in compliance to approved plans and specifications.

- Ensure adherence to infill regulatory guidelines.
- Perform inspections on received complaints for single family residential.
- Perform enforcement duties associated with infill permitted sites and other single family residential sites.
- Document and follow up with inspections, complaints, and enforcements.
- Perform other types of investigations as needed.
- Effectively communicate with development community and property owners.
High School Diploma and two (2) years of inspection, investigative, or compliance related experience for water, wastewater, or stormwater infrastructure.

Your Primary Responsibilities will include
- Cost estimating, proposal drafting, scope and negotiation of SUE projects and tasks.
- Oversight of SUE Field Coordinator, technical personnel and subcontractors as needed to complete all aspects of SUE projects within DRMP Orlando office’s range.
- Maintain list of backlogged projects with priorities for scheduling
- Advise SUE Field Coordinator of priorities and approve field schedules and crew make-up
- Assist SUE Field Coordinator in cooperation with Survey Field Coordinator to ensure prompt data collection of SUE data
- Ensure delivery of collected SUE data to proper office staff for production of deliverables

- Coordinate with interdisciplinary units to fulfill project needs as well as integrate technological advancements to maintain and enhance workflow processes of SUE operations and deliverables (i.e. leverage GIS/CAD Techs as practical to implement field efficiencies, data security, and alternate deliverable options).
- Maintain and assist with standardization of QA/QC processes across territories to adhere to company requirements, industry guidelines, and best practices.
- Assist financial projections, book of business backlog, and equipment inventory of DRMP’s Surveying and Mapping/Geospatial group.
- Assist Utility Coordination efforts in conjunction with project engineers to adhere to statutory process of utility certification on FDOT projects.
- Perform annual employee performance reviews and coach personnel on career tracts.
What you'll need
- A minimum of 8 years in the Subsurface Utility Engineering profession.
- Valid driver’s license with approved/acceptable driving history required.
- Successful history of project management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Obtain a clear understanding of ASCE 38-02 standards and Quality Levels and their applications
• Provide underground utility flagging “designation” with proficiency utilizing ground penetrating radar and electromagnet equipment and other geophysical means.
• Designate all utility line types of conductive or non-conductive materials including water, sewer, gas, electric, fiber optic, PVC and all other underground facilities that would affect excavation of a site

- Be skilled in the operation of SUE utility locating and designating equipment, including pipe and cable locators, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and non-destructive vacuum excavation
- Complete detailed accurate daily reports, forms and field sketches, both electronically as well as draft by hand
- Use of tools and equipment to conduct utility investigations, including jackhammer, pogo-tamper, concrete saw, compressor blower, vacuum hose, air lance, and hand tools
- Drive commercial motor vehicles, however a CDL license is not required
- Perform safety set-up and maintenance of traffic operations under direct supervision of senior field staff
- Assist with survey and data collection tasks, supporting overall crew activities
- Perform daily routine maintenance of equipment
- Perform daily basic vehicle maintenance
Tech II Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED
- 4+ years of experience in the utility locating industry or as a SUE Field Tech
- Ability to read and interpret utility company prints and design plans
- Valid driver's license with good driving record
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical (U.S. only)
- Ability to obtain a DOT medical card for CMV operation (U.S. only)
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform physical movements necessary to operate heavy tools and equipment
- Ability to work outdoors in all climates
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time, by company vehicle or commercial airline, up to 2 week continuous stay.
- Work nights and weekends when required to do so
- Must have a good oral and written communication skills and attention to detail
- OSHA Safety certifications are a plus

We have an immediate opening for a Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) CAD Designer at our Commerce City, Colorado office. The position is responsible for the SUE drafting in AutoCAD for Plan and Profile designs.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Create and/or update utility drawings utilizing processed field data.
- Communicate directly with SUE & internal for incoming orders and work.
- Meet on job sites for large projects as needed.
- Work directly with City Inspectors and Engineers to review and change plans for permitting.
- Actively communicate with customers, vendors, and supervisors as situation warrant.
- Perform QC of deliverables with other team members.
