The Subsurface Utility Engineering Technician is responsible for supporting the engineering team in the identification, mapping, and documentation of underground utilities. The technician will work closely with project managers and engineers to ensure accurate utility information is provided for the planning and design of civil and construction projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct field surveys to locate and map underground utilities using geophysical equipment such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic locators.
- Interpret utility records, as-built drawings, and other relevant documentation to assist in utility detection.
- Coordinate with utility companies and government agencies to obtain necessary permits and information.
- Document field data accurately and prepare reports detailing the findings and potential conflicts with proposed plans.

Qualifications:

We are seeking Engineers who will manage our utility work with Public utilities across multiple disciplines on a range of projects, including utility interference on capital projects, EV charging, and substations at our office in Lower Manhattan. NV5s New York City Office operates on a four-day work week.
ResponsibilitiesThe Project Manager - Utility Engineering will apply their knowledge of civil engineering to manage clients such as Con Edison and Verizon in evaluating subsurface interferences with their facilities on capital infrastructure, design of substations, and installation of EV charging in the NYC area. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Managing scope, schedule, and budget for utility infrastructure projects
- Managing a multi-disciplinary team (electrical, structural, geotechnical, civil, etc.) on substation design
- Building strong client relationships and being the main point of contact to a variety of utility clients
- Attending in-person, field, and online meetings with clients to provide administrative support and engineering guidance to resolve utility interferences
- Leading a team to perform record research, including utility plates, NYCTA Subway records, etc.
- Reviewing and assisting with development of private utility alignments to avoid utility interferences
- Overseeing the development of technical drawings, preparation of estimates of quantities, and writing specifications
- Coordinating field work for data gathering, test pit inspection, surveys, and construction observations
- Overseeing the preparation of support drawings, conduit plans, overlay of private utility facilities on NYC Construction Plans
- Working effectively with project teams, clients, and all other stakeholders
- Responsible for quality control of tasks
- Assisting with proposals and business development
A Baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college.
- Minimum of 4 years experience in infrastructure engineering design in NYC
- Experience working for clients such as private utility companies or NYC Agencies
- Knowledge of CAD (AutoCAD especially)
- Knowledge of Civil3D (a plus)
- Knowledge of Microstation (a plus)

General Responsibilities:
Oversee projects related to Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE). The Project Manager (PM) will oversee utility records review and documentation, and coordinate with survey crews, geophysical teams, and hydro excavation. Geophysical experience is preferred in-order to assist with Leven B designating activities. The PM will also assist with proposal writing and management. Define survey objectives, design survey approaches, analyze the resulting geophysical data, and provide interpretation of results. Results are incorporated into the planning, design and construction of vital infrastructure such as roads, tunnels, airports, industrial, and other facilities. All SUE projects would be performed in accordance with ASCE 38-22.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
- Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
- Mid-level, SUE PM responsible for oversight of Leven D through A activities on medium sized projects with a variety of complexity.
- Demonstrate knowledge in the use of ground penetrating radar, magnetometry, terrain conductivity, and other utility locating methods.
- Ensure project delivery and compliance with ASCE 38-22 standard.
- Participates with more senior Geophysicists on large, more complex projects.
- Performs site visits, field observations and field data collection or assignments.
- Direct and supervise field staff to test and collect data and/or document site activities.
- Responsible for developing written proposals to clients for both small and large projects including quality control review of proposals written by others.
- Evaluates complex geophysical data and assembles in written reports.
- Review final SUE drawing and report.
- May serve as team member or lead in meetings and communications with client pertaining to specific projects/tasks.
- May oversee work performed by lower level Geophysicists and Technicians.
- Bachelor's degree in geophysics, engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 4 years experience.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable violation history.
- Willingness to travel.

We are seeking Engineers who will manage our utility work with public utilities across multiple disciplines on a range of projects, including utility interference on capital projects, EV charging, and substations at our office in Lower Manhattan. NV5's New York City Office operates on a four-day work week.
ResponsibilitiesThe Project Manager will apply their knowledge of civil engineering to manage clients such as Con Edison and Verizon in evaluating subsurface interferences with their facilities on capital infrastructure, design of substations, and installation of EV charging in the NYC area. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Managing scope, schedule, and budget for utility infrastructure projects
- Managing a multi-disciplinary team on substation design
- Building strong client relationships and being the main point of contact to a variety of utility clients
- Attending in-person, field and on-line meetings with clients to provide administrative support and engineering guidance to resolve utility interferences
- Leading a team to perform record research, including utility plates, NYCTA Subway records, etc.
- Reviewing and assisting with development of private utility alignments to avoid utility interferences
- Studies, overseeing the development of technical drawings, preparation of estimates of quantities and writing specifications
- Coordinating field work for data gathering, test pit inspection, surveys and construction observations
- Overseeing the preparation of support drawings, conduit plans, overlay of private utility facilities on NYC Construction Plans
- Working effectively with project teams, clients, and all other stakeholders
- Responsible for quality control of tasks
- Assisting with proposals and business development
A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college.
- Minimum of 4 years' experience infrastructure engineering design in NYC
- Experience working for clients such as private utility companies or NYC Agencies
- Knowledge of CAD (AutoCAD especially)
- Knowledge of Civil3D (a plus)
- Knowledge of Microstation (a plus)
- Detailed oriented, excellent writing skills
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
- EIT required
- PE preferred or the ability to obtain with 1 year

Compensation: $85,000.00 - $135,000.00
