Join our team as a Program Specialist I in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) at Iowa State University. In this role, you’ll be the backbone of our Veterinary Field Services (VFS) unit, ensuring smooth operations and exceptional service for clients, students, and faculty.

What You’ll Do:

  • Coordinate client appointments, manage medical records, and ensure accurate communication between clients and clinicians.

  • Provide exceptional customer service across multiple channels—phone, email, text, and in-person.

  • Manage client accounts, including payments and preparation of medications and supplies.

  • Schedule and coordinate vehicle use for field-based teaching, clinical services, and research trials; liaise with University Transportation Services for maintenance.

  • Support student orientation and compliance with facility SOPs, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.

You’ll collaborate with clinicians, students, administrative staff, and departmental leadership to ensure smooth operations and high-quality service delivery.

Additional Details:

  • Term: Full-time, on-site position located in Ames, IA.

  • Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00AM – 5:00PM, in the office

  • Scope: Supports over 100 VDPAM courses, many of which are taught in the field.

OdySea Aquarium is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated person to join the Animal Health Department as the Animal Health Technician. This position is responsible for providing support to the Animal health department and OdySea Aquarium's divers Animal Care Team and animal collection. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Under general supervision, assists the veterinarian in the medical care of the animal collection including all species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates housed at the OdySea Aquarium.
  • Works closely with the animal care staff and aquarists for medical updates, treatments and diagnostics.
  • Assist in the maintenance of medical records, participating in quarantine procedures and preventative health programs.
  • Proficiency in assisting with diagnostic testing.

  • Conducts chemical and cytological analyses of fluids and biological samples such as water, blood, feces and urine to determine normal or abnormal levels. Prepares biological specimens for shipment.

  • Performs cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments, diagnostic equipment, and hospital/procedure areas.
  • Dispenses and administers medications, treatments and vaccinations to animals as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Orients, mentors and teaches clinical diagnostic, treatment and laboratory methods. procedures and techniques to staff as appropriate.

A level I pharmacy technician works under close supervision of the pharmacist to dispense prescription drug products to end-users. Education Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED completed

Specific Responsibilities :

Surgical Support

  • Performs minor surgeries and assists the clinical veterinarians or other qualified individuals with surgical procedures. Prepares sterile instrument packs and prepares surgical suite animals for aseptic surgery. Administers anesthetic agents, intravenous fluids, and monitors anesthesia and post-surgical recovery. Submits surgery billing statements to CCM business office on a monthly basis for recharge to investigators (essential function for cost recovery).

Clinical Rounds

  • Performs daily rounds to triage new animal health reports and monitor ongoing clinical cases. Communicates with veterinary staff and laboratory personnel to notify and update regarding the status of clinical cases. Performs physical examinations, make treatment recommendations, performs treatments, and consults with clinical veterinarians regarding health reports.

Environmental Enrichment

  • Ensures that environmental and social enrichment is provided to the laboratory animals. Facilitates training of a variety of research animals (NHPs, pigs, cats) in various areas (clicker training, etc.). Orders and prepares enrichment supplies. Observes and oversees pair and group housing.

Colony Health Sentinel Program

  • Coordinates the rodent colony health monitoring program (Sentinel Program) and incoming rodent quarantine program. Responsibilities include scheduling of quarterly and quarantine sentinel shipments with the diagnostic laboratory, ordering of replacement sentinels and review of the testing results.

Drugs, Supplies and Testing

  • Dispenses non-controlled drugs and supplies form the CCM pharmacy to laboratory personnel. Performs periodic inventories of drugs, supplies, assay kits and instruments. Prepares and submits animals or specimens (blood, tissue, feces) for testing at diagnostic laboratories as determined necessary by the clinical veterinarians.

Teaching/Training

  • Trains animal care staff, laboratory personnel and interns in proper animal restraint, barrier technique and asepsis. Trains laboratory personnel, interns, and AHTs in technical procedures such as intravenous injections, blood collection, intubation, catheterization, etc.

Regulatory

  • Remains current with all regulations pertaining to laboratory animals including the Guide, Animal Welfare Act, etc. Maintains technical familiarity with a wide range of clinical and experimental procedures for a variety of laboratory animal species. Participates in various staff meetings, staff training and continuing professional education. Becomes familiar with relevant Animal Study Protocols and meets with investigators and laboratory personnel to discuss research needs and animal health concerns.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a college level curriculum in veterinary technology requiring a minimum of two years of full-time academic study in a program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association OR completion of a 4-year degree in animal science, biology, veterinary science, zoology or related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience as an animal health technician in laboratory animal medicine OR 5 years' experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician in a veterinary medical facility and
  • AALAS certified ALAT or equivalent combination of relevant work or education experience.

  • Conduct behavior evaluations and collaborate with the behavior program team
  • Perform intake exams, administer vaccinations, and work alongside the veterinary team
  • Execute humane euthanasia and prepare rabies specimens, as required
  • Support and collaborate with volunteers, providing direction as needed
  • Participate in adoption counseling and manage the owner surrender list
  • Facilitate animal transfers, including preparing videos, records, and partner communications
  • Perform accurate data entry into medical records and shelter management software (Chameleon)
As the ideal candidate for this position, you will have knowledge of animal behavior, enrichment, and safe animal handling techniques. In addition, you will possess many of the following:
  • Familiarity with animal diseases, symptoms, and shelter disease control best practices

This recruitment is being conducted to fill a 0.5 FTE Part-Time Animal Health Technician position in the Department of Health Services. This employment list may also be used to fill future part-time or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list. Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience : Any combination of education and experience which would provide for the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, two years of experience performing paramedical tasks in a veterinary office or animal shelter or possession of a valid Animal Health Technician Certificate issued by the California State Board of Examiners would provide the knowledge and abilities.

License : Possession of an Animal Health Technician Certificate is highly desirable. Possession of a valid driver's license.

Special Requirements : Completion of P.O.S.T. course work and certification in the use of firearms and exercising powers of arrest as specified in Penal Code 830.9 may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of : methods, techniques, and medication and pharmaceuticals used in the care and treatment of animals; physical and behavioral characteristics of common domestic animals and livestock and characteristics of common diseases.

Ability to : learn State laws and County ordinances relating to the care, treatment, and impounding of animals; handle animals properly and perform the work in a humane manner; willingness to conduct euthanasia of animals by direct injection; recognize symptoms of rabies and other common diseases of animals; properly and legibly complete necessary forms; work tactfully and effectively with co-workers, staff of other agencies working with animals, and the general public.
