Summary:
Provides medical interpretation for patients, staff and guests who are non-English speaking, deaf, or hard of hearing, to help communication with healthcare professionals.
Responsibilities:
+ Acts as a conduit between patient and/or guest and healthcare professional for communication in the patient's preferred language.
+ Accurately interprets medical terminology, including but not limited to anatomy, prescriptions, and procedures.
+ Complies with all privacy and confidentiality policies when communicating patient information.
+ May translate written documentation.
Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
Requirements:
+ High School diploma or GED. Completion of medical interpretation competency test.
+ Effective 6/1/2025, National certification as Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) or Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) for eligible languages within 2 years of hire or from the effective date, whichever is later.
+ 2 years of medical interpretation.

The Senior Manager of Language Access Services (LAS) oversees the provision of interpretation and translation services for patients and families with Limited English Proficiency (LEP), including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. This role ensures compliance with federal regulations such as the OCR 1964 ruling, ADA, Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, and The Joint Commission standards. Our team is composed of professional qualified interpreters specialized in medical interpretation in the languages most often requested at MD Anderson: Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin.
All MD Anderson medical interpreters/translators are screened and qualified by the Language Access Services department and periodically evaluated for proficiency and competency.
SUMMARY:
Provides oral and written translation of patient care-related material.
Our medical interpreters are involved in direct patient care whenever there is a language barrier. They are the voice of patients and staff. Interpreters will not answer patients' medical questions, but rather guide patients to the proper resources. All medical questions should be answered by the appropriate health care provider, and other patient concerns are to be handled by the staff specialized in the issue of concern.
* Provides oral translation of discussions related to patient referral, new patient registration, financial evaluation, patient assessment, treatment planning, admissions, discharge and other clinical and healthcare related discussions.
* Provides written translation of patient histories and other medical reports, patient education and instructional material, advance directives, medical documents and other institutional publications.
* Interprets clinical, financial, psychosocial and ethical discussions related to patient care activities.
* Serves as a resource to patients, staff and care providers to contribute to successful patient outcomes.
* Performs on-call translation duties requiring immediate response to electronic paging.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
EDCUATION: Bachelor's degree in a foreign language or related field.

Qualifications and requirements:
- Graduate of a master's level program in Speech Language Pathology which is accredited by Education Standards Board or whose practice meets ASHA certification requirements

Job Description
Evaluates, plans, treats and implements care for patients in the areas of speech, language, cognition and swallowing accordance with professional standards of the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) using any established Clinical Practice Guidelines.
**Education Qualifications:**
Key Responsibilities:
+ Provides therapy evaluation, treatment planning, treatment, patient/caregiver education, and discharge planning for a full caseload of patients
+ Provides all ancillary/administrative requirements for a full caseload of patients, including documentation, billing, scheduling management, and other administrative duties
+ Demonstrates appropriate communication, professionalism and supervision of support staff (licensed assistants, aides, volunteers) and complies with all organization policies.
+ Complies with organization code of conduct
+ Meets professional organization core values, code of ethics, &/or scope of practice
+ Work where the patient need is highest (including flexing to other departments) when home department schedule allows
+ Provide staff education, participate/lead committee groups, participate in staff onboarding/orientation
+ May serve as a clinical instructor, participate in department or therapy discipline committees, and complete credential/certification that would benefit patient care
Educational Requirements:
+ Master's degree from accredited speech and language pathology program

+ Current registration/license to practice speech-language pathology in the state of practice
