**Summary Description of Job:**
This position is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the NFS Transportation/Waste Management (T/WM) programs are compliant with federal and state waste regulations. Specific attributes include waste characterization, packaging, storage, and disposition including compliance with RCRA, TSCA, NRC and DOT.
**Major Duties and Responsibilities of Job:**
+ Interface with on-site waste generators to develop solutions to technical problems associated with T/WM.
+ Provide direction to waste generators for adherence to on-site and off-site waste acceptance criteria.
+ Review and approve work requests, procedures, and drawings detailing proposed process changes and determine waste characterization, packaging, storage and disposal strategies. Waste streams included are RCRA, low level radioactive waste, mixed waste, PCB waste, and sanitary waste.
+ Develop/revise waste characterization document.
+ Prepare sampling and analysis plans in accordance with EPA guidance documents and SW-846.
+ Interpret laboratory analytical data and characterize material for disposal in accordance with applicable regulations and disposal/treatment facilities waste acceptance criteria.
**Educational Requirements of Job:**
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering, Waste Management, Environmental Science or related science, engineering, or technical field OR 8 years of equivalent experience acceptable in lieu of degree.
**Experience Requirements of Job (Beyond educational or equivalent requirements)** **:**
Three (3) to Five (5) years experience since degree. Must have a working knowledge of RCRA, DOT, and radioactive waste management pertaining to the packaging and management of hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste.

Leidos has an opening for a **Waste Management Technician** **at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland Ohio.** The **Waste Management Technician** will support the Waste Management and Environmental teams and spill response program.
The **Waste Management Technician** will ensure proper management of hazardous materials, including the completion and review of waste profiles for Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulated hazardous waste, universal wastes, used oils, and infectious waste; TSCA regulated asbestos-containing materials, and PCBs. Role will include sampling of environmental media for characterization, stormwater management, Underground Storage Tank inspections, spill response, review of property and equipment for hazards prior to disposal, and DOT transportation services.
**Must be available to work a flexible schedule and be on call.**
**Must be able to pass a Public Trust background investigation. U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent. Residence is required due to length of investigation required for non-U.S. persons.**

**Required Education and Skills:**

Responsibilities

* Operates the tow motor, picking up waste carts and universal waste containers from designated locations and transporting them to the Waste Management Center.

* Prepares landfill log and slips for landfill and weighs all medical waste and recyclables on scale to determine disposal charge to all components.

* Performs preventive maintenance as scheduled. Makes necessary minor repairs.
* Operates compactors and communicates with hauler when they are ready to be transported to landfill or other facility.
* Ensures proper operation of equipment.
* Identifies and reports improper disposal activities and unsafe conditions to address problem areas and safety concerns.
* Performs recycling program functions according to the Waste Management Program.
* Operates other equipment related to the transport, processing, and disposal of materials.

Qualifications

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Maintain adherence to Company policy regarding operations and safety issues.
  • May assist in investigation of accidents, injuries, or property damage claims.
  • May be required to drive and/or ride the back of route vehicles to cover shortages in staff or missed pick-ups.
  • Manage, direct and or implement coaching guidelines/specifics for personnel at your site.

**POSITION SUMMARY:**
This position is responsible for cleaning, drying, sanitizing, and tagging flats so they can be sent back to farms and be reused. This practice keeps replacement costs to a minimum. Plastic flats can be cleaned and sanitized much easier than paper flats which aids in the control of bacteria coming and going from the plant. This worker will be responsible in cleaning the Breaking and Transfer Department with the correct cleaning procedures. This position needs to always comply with Safety work rules as well as an obligation to reinforce Safety as a Core Value. Ensures that all policies, procedures, and activities, related to Food Safety & Quality, are followed, and complied with uniformly, in an effort to reduce product and process variability. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
+ Responsible for cleaning and drying flats before sending them out.
+ Monitor and oversee that stacks of clean flats enter and exit the spin dryer correctly.
+ Remove stacks of clean dry flats from a conveyor to a nearby skid.
+ Assist in the general good housekeeping of the area.
+ Responsible for correctly tagging flats.
+ Responsible for cleaning machines when needed.
+ Monitor automatic mechanical loading of individual flats into flat washer ensuring the machine does not jam.
+ Oversee entire procedure for flat washer enduring there are no jams from the time a flat enters the washing area until it exits and stacks at the other end of the machine.
+ Adhere to safe work practices, follow GMP's, maintain sanitary conditions and ensure that product quality is maintained. Report to management any conditions or practices that may adversely affect food safety, food quality or personnel safety.
+ Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:**
+ Less than high school education.
+ Prior manufacturing experience preferred. Willingness to work in cold, wet, and loud environment.
+ Have ability to bend, stoop and reach while lifting carrying stacks of empty flats.
+ Ability to repeatedly lift to 30 lbs.
+ Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
+ Ability to do several tasks simultaneously.

**Responsibilities**
Responsible for guiding refuse through the combustion process. Operates all systems to ensure compliance with USEPA, MPCA, USDA and the city of Rochester regulations. This includes adjusting refuse feed rates for optimal combustion efficiency, operating and monitoring the control panel to ensure the waste combustor, wet scrubber, WESP, wastewater treatment system, Urea, and caustic systems are functioning within their designed specifications and set-points.
**Primary Responsibilities:**
+ Oversees the data acquisition system and carries out adjustments to comply with the operating permit.
+ Notifies SR System Operator of potential failures and provides technical and mechanical assistance for repairs and modifications of facility systems.
+ Is relied upon in emergencies, repairs, and power outages.
+ Operates front end loader to stage refuse for the receiving conveyors and to clear the unloading area for the refuse trucks.
+ Operates articulating material handlers to keep refuse pits flowing to the conveyance system.
+ Performs ongoing checks on all systems using the computer operating system.
+ Provides training and technical knowledge to new facility employees and Systems Operator 1.
+ Operates the high-pressure boiler to provide steam to the smoke eater and infectious waste sterilizers.
+ Able to perform water quality checks for the water softeners, boiler, cooling tower and waste water system.
+ Conducts preventative maintenance and tasks as assigned.
+ Works on improvement projects for all systems and material handling equipment.
+ Performs record keeping on ash roll-offs, refuse deliveries, circular charts, customer regulated medical waste deliveries, regulated waste deliveries and daily logbook.
+ Operates forklift to dump ash and unload deliveries.
+ Loads and monitors the pathological waste combustor.
+ Attends on and off-site training for new equipment, MPCA certification, electrical, safety and permit changes.
+ Sanitizes waste carts, ensuring at least one load of sanitized carts is ready to return to the Clinic campus at all times.
+ Performs miscellaneous housekeeping in and around the work area.
+ Requires the ability to work rotating shifts, on-call and overtime, as needed, including some weekends.

**Qualifications**
High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of facility or industrial maintenance program degree or equivalency of 4 years of maintenance experience. Must be Registered as an Unlicensed Electrician and working towards a Maintenance Electrician License.
**Additional Qualifications:**
+ Must be able to safely and comfortably handle regulated medical waste.
+ Requires general computer operating ability.
+ Experience repairing and maintaining electrical equipment, 3-phase motors, and industrial maintenance preferred.
