**Job Summary:**
+ Under general supervision of a BD Excellence Manager, the intern will work in a variety of assignments to provide help reduce waste on manufacturing lines.
+ The intern's assignments will make a positive contribution to BD Medical as well as give the intern opportunities to gain **"hands on"** work experience with the intent of training the intern for the potential of starting a successful career after graduation.
+ This is a part-time internship at BD's Sandy, UT location.
+ Interns are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week while also enrolled in school.
+ Candidates must be able to commute to Sandy, UT.
**Responsibilities:**
+ Work with several departments including injection molding, operations, engineering and others to review tolerances of material being produced vs what assembly line can manage with minimal scrap.
+ Work with molding team to optimize machine setting for material delivery to internal customer.
+ Determine Centerline settings and proper cleaning and maintenance schedule of newly established machine parameters.
+ Create a master plan for production associates and maintenance personnel to adapt to keep line performance at optimal levels while maintaining target levels or below or scrap produced.
+ Design a planning schedule to optimize material produced from specific machines to run on lines attuned to those settings.
+ Provide daily project support to engineering, operations, or maintenance departments.
+ Work with production personnel to understand and improve operation of production equipment.
+ Work with production maintenance to develop the ability to perform routine troubleshooting and repair of production equipment.
+ Assist an engineering project leader by completing technical tasks such as design and solid modeling, coordinating purchasing or assembly of components, and implementing improvements using standard validation processes.
+ Intern will learn validation principles through BD validation training and then apply them under the supervision of a project engineer.
+ Intern will learn the basics of the Lean Manufacturing methodology through Operational Excellence training and will apply Lean tools in day-to-day problem solving.
+ Act as a team leader for smaller engineering projects or short-term production support projects.
+ Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures.
+ Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures including RCRA Hazardous Waste regulations.
+ Comply with all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance principles.
+ Other duties as assigned.
**Minimum Requirements:**
+ Must be currently enrolled in an accredited University/College Engineering program; preferred majors are Mechanical
+ Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Biomedical Engineering.
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
+ Must be able to commute to BD Sandy, UT office.

Position Purpose:Under minimal direction from supervisory staff, performs a wide variety of often strenuous physical tasks associated with the collection, sorting and disposal of waste and recycled materials from the Dartmouth campus. In support of departmental operations and on an as-needed basis also performs snow and ice removal and labor-related activities including movement of furniture, equipment and supplies to various locations and providing support for set-up and take-down of events on campus throughout the year. Must be capable of proficiently operating a variety of medium and light equipment. This specifically includes the safe operation of compactor and other trucks associated with the collection and transport of waste and recycling in constrained locations as well as the operation of fixed compactors.
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:High School or equivalency

- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain medium and small equipment.
- Strong communication skills and customer service orientation.
- Ability to work autonomously.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activities in all weather conditions.
- Willingness and ability to work overtime as required.
- Must be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
- Must be willing to take and pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.
- Must pass an annual hearing test.
- Must successfully complete the following training prior to undertaking work to which training relates including Driver Safety, Forklift Operator, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Spaces and Hazard Communication.
- High level of knowledge regarding and ability to operate and maintain a wide variety of powered equipment such as jackhammers, snow blowers, pumps, and electric snakes.
- Ability to understand and apply Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines relating to excavation, drainage, and confined space entry.
- Ability to direct the work of and provide hands-on leadership for small work parties assigned to specific projects.

Quick Link: Description:Primary Responsibilities
- Assists with the collection, sorting, and disposal of bulk and contained solid waste, compost, universal waste and recycled materials.
- Removes debris, discarded items, and other waste material from outdoor areas and loading docks and transports for disposal.
- Assists with the set-up and take-down associated with major events on the campus, such as commencement and reunions, conferences, picnics and concerts. Includes activities such as the transport, assembly, disassembly and storage of furniture, platforms, barricades, public address, sound and lighting systems.
- Packs, loads, transports, unloads, unpacks, arranges, and stores furniture, equipment and supplies between College locations.
- Performs assigned custodial and maintenance tasks to maintain shop area vehicles in a neat, clean and orderly condition.
- Performs snow and ice removal operations using medium and small equipment and hand tools.
In support of duties as assigned above, operates medium and light-duty equipment including but not limited to types as described below:
- Light Duty Equipment: Snowblower
- Medium Duty Equipment: Sidewalk Plow with accessories; Medium Tractor with accessories; Forklift; Box Truck; Pick-Up Truck with snowplow or sander; Stake Bed Truck; Trash Compactor Truck; Telehandler

Performs the handling, preparation and disposal of various waste streams and materials according to the Medical Center’s Waste Management and Diversion Programs. Operates and maintains the waste autoclaves following prescribed safety and health procedures.
Responsibilities
* Responsible for the proper handling and disposition of all Medical Center discards.
* Keeps autoclaves operating at required temperature and pressure.
* Operates the tow motor, picking up waste carts and universal waste containers from designated locations and transporting them to the Waste Management Center.
* Removes bags and containers of various waste streams from carts, identifies contents, and properly processes or disposes of materials into designated compactor, storage container or area.
* Removes bags of co-mingled recyclables from carts; identifies by category, sorts into designated categories, placing them in proper containers, and then moving them to designated areas.
* Shreds all recycled white and colored paper to ensure confidentiality.
* Prepares landfill log and slips for landfill and weighs all medical waste and recyclables on scale to determine disposal charge to all components.
* Prepares paperwork for the hauler’s pickup of regulated medical waste.
* Maintains cleanliness of autoclaves, loading dock, and Waste Management Center.
* Performs preventive maintenance as scheduled. Makes necessary minor repairs.
* Operates compactors and communicates with hauler when they are ready to be transported to landfill or other facility.
* Ensures proper operation of equipment.
* Identifies and reports improper disposal activities and unsafe conditions to address problem areas and safety concerns.
* Performs recycling program functions according to the Waste Management Program.
* Operates other equipment related to the transport, processing, and disposal of materials.
* Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
* High school graduate or equivalent with 2 years of demonstrated work experience required.
* Computer capability required.
* Must be knowledgeable in the types of waste materials for proper autoclaving and recycling.
Required Licensure/Certifications
- Must become a Certified Solid Waste Operator through New Hampshire's Department of Environmental Services Solid Waste Operator Training Program within 1 year.
- Once certified, must participate in annual Professional Development trainings to maintain Certification.
