Job Description
Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
The Trust Web team is a core part of Square's Growth product organization, focused on helping more sellers to begin using Square. Aligned with our strategy to Simplify, Automate, and Graduate seller experiences, we build and maintain web experiences that guide sellers from signup to first payment. Our work directly supports Square's growth by improving onboarding, engagement, and seller success.
We are looking for a product-minded Staff Software Engineer with deep frontend experience to serve as a Technical Lead accelerating our growth experimentation and improving how we learn from sellers. In this role, you'll blend strategic technical leadership with hands-on development by leading major initiatives, building key features, and mentoring engineers across teams as we scale Square's growth through continuous experimentation.
You Will
- Shape and lead initiatives that accelerate experimentation and unlock faster product learning across Square's web experiences.
- Build and scale React applications held to high standards for performance, maintainability, and accessibility.
- Partner with Product and Design to translate insights into simple, impactful user experiences that drive seller growth.
- Contribute to and influence the broader Square Web community, sharing context and best practices across teams.
- Advocate for platform and tooling investments that improve engineering velocity and system extensibility.
- Mentor engineers across the organization, fostering a culture of technical excellence, inclusion, and smooth execution.
- Explore and apply emerging technologies, including AI-assisted automation, to enhance developer workflows and experimentation capabilities.
- BS Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience; candidates in this role typically have 12+ years of industry experience
- Experience helping an organization to drive business growth by increasing experimentation velocity
- Proven record of driving collaboration and impact across an organization
- Deep expertise in React and modern frameworks with experience building and maintaining large-scale React applications.
- Great communication skills and an ability to work cross-functionally with partners in Design and Product
- A sense of customer empathy and desire to influence product direction
- Understanding and curiosity in creating well thought out, reliable, and performant frontend systems
- Languages: JavaScript, Typescript
- Frameworks: React, Ember
- Testing: Jest, Playwright
- Tools: LaunchDarkly, Storybook, Snowflake, Sentry, Datadog
