We are seeking Wireless Communications Engineers to help us give our nation a significant advantage by controlling the wireless communications environment. You will be joining a team of engineers that provide the U.S. military and intelligence communities with operational advantages, using machine learning, software-defined radios and protocol reverse engineering to develop advanced capabilities for research and operational prototypes, applying innovative research to some of our government 's most critical challenges.

As a Wireless Communications Engineer.

  • You will conduct wireless communication systems engineering research activities in support of Cyber Operations, Special Operations, and Homeland Protection Mission Areas.
  • You will be responsible for researching and developing innovative solutions for military and Government sponsors.
  • You will apply problem solving and analysis to areas related to telecommunications, remote sensing, anomaly detection, etc.
  • You will lead the research and development of innovative solutions to solve complex problems in the field of wireless communications.
  • You will identify appropriate algorithms and approaches for solving critical communications problems using advanced signal processing, data processing, and machine learning techniques.
  • You will develop software prototypes of novel signal processing approaches.
  • You will document work in formal technical reports and informal memoranda and present work to sponsors and the technical community.
  • You will support testing of prototype and operational systems working closely with sponsors to ensure mission success.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you.

  • Have at least a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or another related technical field.
  • Have at least five years of relevant experience in wireless communications engineering/analysis.
  • Have demonstrated, strong teamwork and interpersonal skills along with effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Are capable of working on projects independently.
  • Have the ability to travel within the continental United States; Travel to sponsor sites local to APL may also be required.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Top Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

About the Team

You'll join Copeland's Controls Division, an expanding hardware/firmware development group supporting Cargo and Marine Solutions. The team is hands-on and collaborative, and everyone contributes across both firmware and hardware. We are looking for someone who thrives in active problem-solving and critical thinking!

What You'll Do

  • Own the Bluetooth (4.0-6.0) and 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi firmware stack for Copeland's wireless modem products.

  • Design and develop firmware for microcontroller-based products and cellular modem integration.

  • Drive the full product development cycle-from requirements and functional specs through testing, validation, and release.

  • Ensure robust communication protocols and performance for wireless products.

  • Create and maintain documentation: requirements, functional specifications, test plans, and product change notices.

  • Collaborate with validation and manufacturing teams to build and execute test plans.

  • Support manufacturing on new product releases as well as sustaining engineering: quality improvements, cost reduction, obsolescence, and root-cause failure analysis.

  • Troubleshoot product returns/failures to identify issues and corrective actions.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

  • 10+ years in embedded firmware/hardware development.

  • 3+ years hands-on experience with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or comparable communication protocols.

  • Strong proficiency in C or Embedded C programming (with compilers/toolchains).

  • Functional knowledge of electronic components and circuits: microprocessors, microcontrollers, op-amps, regulators, and digital logic ICs.

  • Strong understanding of software design and development processes.

  • Documentation and presentation skills (MS Office tools).

  • Self-starter with strong organization and a team-oriented mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with RTOS (ThreadX, FreeRTOS, Zephyr) and scripting (Python).

  • Cellular product development exposure.

  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills.

  • Solid working knowledge of C++.

  • Proficiency with laboratory test equipment.

  • Comfort working across multi-cultural/global teams.

This role is a hybrid opportunity (3 days onsite) and can report into any of the following locations:
