About the Department
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) received a Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) in 2014 and was accredited through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) in 2018. The FCFRD is a premier all-hazards fire and rescue department providing basic and advanced life support (BLS and ALS) emergency medical services (EMS), fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention, and arson investigation services. Approximately 1,400 highly trained uniformed personnel work in 39 strategically placed fire and rescue stations. FCFRD field personnel work one of three 24-hour rotating shifts. The FCFRD staffs 38 ALS engines, 14 ALS trucks/towers, eight ALS rescue squads, five tankers, a hazardous materials unit, a hazardous materials support unit, and 42 emergency medical transport units. Several other types of apparatus, such as brush trucks, boats, and support vehicles supplement the needs of the FCFRD. Additionally, the FCFRD is home to VATF-1/USA-1, part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) response system, and one of two internationally deployable Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Teams in the United States.


Duties include:
  • Responds to emergency calls to protect life and property;
  • Combats, extinguishes, and prevents fires;
  • Participates in rescue extrication operations and provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured;
  • Provides basic and advanced emergency medical care to stabilize the condition of the critically ill or injured prior to transport to a medical facility;
  • Drives emergency apparatus, including, but not limited to transport units, engines, trucks, rescue squads, and tankers;

  • Responds to fire alarms and a variety of emergency calls

Emergency Medical Services
  • Drives a Basic Life Support Unit or Advanced Life Support Unit in response to emergency calls, transporting victims to a medical facility
  • Conducts primary and secondary patient survey
  • Provides and assists in rendering emergency care, such as opening and maintaining a victim's airway, giving positive pressure ventilation and cardiac resuscitation in a pulseless, non-breathing patient, controlling hemorrhages, treating for shock, immobilizing fractures, bandaging wounds, assisting in childbirth, and initiating poison and burn treatments
  • Performs triage assessment in a multi-casualty incident
  • Inspects scene of poisoning or drug overdose to determine nature of poison, and identifies antidote or treatment procedure
  • Treats a range of injuries requiring emergency care techniques within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • Assists in the extrication of entrapped victims, using prescribed techniques and appliances for removing the patient safely
  • Assures prompt medical care on delivery by reporting via radio, directly to the emergency department or control center, the nature and extent of injuries or the medical situation, as well as the estimated time of arrival
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on the rescue vehicle
  • Stocks and maintains and participates in the inventory of supplies and medical equipment in the vehicle

In Each Functional Area
  • Attends training sessions, participates in drills, and participates in the physical fitness program;

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:

During their probationary period, they shall complete an ALS internship to become FCFRD-authorized ALS providers. The FCFRD also provides continuing education to personnel with paramedic certification during and following the probationary period. Following successful completion of ALS internship, paramedics are eligible for ALS incentive pay ($,740) and additional ALS riding pay of 2-3/hour depending on apparatus assigned.

If unsuccessful in completing the ALS internship, candidates will be moved to a firefighter position and their pay will be reduced by two steps.

The Firefighter will perform firefighting, rescue and emergency medical response activities to protect life and property. He/She will respond to a variety of fire, emergency, and non-emergency calls for service. Job Responsibilities:

  • Responding immediately and safely to emergency calls and requests for assistance.

Qualifications Required:

  • Minimum H.S. diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required; Associate's degree or higher preferred
  • 5 years of experience as a professional firefighter
  • Possession of a valid Fire Fighter I & II certificate required
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license required
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid C.P.R. certificate required

Job Summary

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue is currently seeking qualified applicants to establish an eligibility pool for the position of Firefighter/EMT. Selected candidates are expected to provide skilled emergency and non-emergency related services, including, but not limited to: fire suppression, basic and advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care, hazardous materials incident response, technical rescue operations, life safety, public education program delivery, and other duties, as assigned.

All candidates will be required to successfully complete a Fire-Rescue Recruit School before assignment to a fire and rescue station. Generally, traditional recruit schools last approximately six (6) to seven (7) months and accelerated recruit schools last approximately 12 weeks which may be offered based on Department discretion and qualified candidate availability. While in Recruit School, Recruits will be assigned to a 40-hour work week. Upon successful completion of Recruit School, and considered minimum staffing, Recruits transition to Probationary Firefighters/EMT's and will then move to a 48- hour work week. This schedule equates to 24 hours on shift, 48 hours off shift with an assigned "Kelly day". (Kelly Day- A regularly scheduled day off at a scheduled interval to ensure a consistent 48-hour average work schedule). Employees' salaries will remain the same upon transition from a 40-hour schedule to a 48-hour schedule.

ALS Benefit: We are seeking Advanced Life Support (ALS) Providers to join our department. Upon local authorization following successful completion of Recruit School, an Intermediate or Paramedic will become eligible for a $10,000 one-time, lump sum incentive, in addition to an ALS Specialty Pay Adjustment. The current ALS Specialty Pay levels, in addition to base salary are as follows: Advanced (A-EMT) - $,000, Intermediate - 12,500, and Paramedic - 15,000.

Education Benefit: The starting salary of Firefighter (F1), Step-1 is 62,000. LCFR's Education Benefit offers additional compensation for candidates who possess a four (4) year degree or higher. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree will start at Step 2 ( 65,100.00), and a Master's Degree at Step 3 ( 68,355.00).

Experience Benefit: Applicants with career fire and rescue experience from Departments with an established recruit training academy will receive year-for-year credit 1 step. Effective 7/1/2025, they are eligible for 2 steps credit. Applicants with career fire and rescue experience from other jurisdictions without recruit training experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants who completed an LC-CFRS Volunteer Fire School Program and are active LC-CFRS Operational Volunteer Members will receive one (1) Step for every two (2) full years of Volunteer Member experience up to 1 step credit. Effective 7/1/2025, applicants will receive up to 2 step credits. Step credits earned for career and volunteer experience may not be combined.

Applicants may receive both educational and experience step credits. Total step credits may not exceed placement of Step 8.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, must hold a valid driver's license, and possess a High School Diploma or GED by time of hire.

As part of the selection process, applicants may be disqualified for use of drugs, certain driving violations, or other factors based on selection criteria. qualifications for hire include: MA registered EMT-Paramedic (at time of hire)*, valid class D

with pro board certification in Firefighter I & II will be given preference.

The Lexington Fire Department is a progressive full-time career department that provides fire
suppression, hazardous condition mitigation, emergency medical services at the advanced life
support level, and community based fire prevention activities.

The present wage for a Firefighter/Paramedic is $72,045.99 (including hazmat and paramedic
stipends), plus eleven paid holidays, education stipends, and paid vacation and sick leave.

As a condition of employment, qualified candidates will be subject to a background
investigation, pre-employment physical exam including drug test and physical abilities test
(PAT), and a psychological exam.

SUMMARY: Performs responsible work related to fire suppression, fire prevention education, rescue, hazardous material, and basic and advanced emergency medical services.

Examples of Duties

Performs work related to fire suppression, fire prevention education, rescue, Hazardous Material, and advanced emergency medical services.

Conducts searches of fire building interiors for rescue of trapped persons; performs ventilation, overhaul, and advancement of hose lines to apply water to fire.

Evacuates people from hazardous areas such as burning buildings, hazardous atmospheres, damaged motor vehicles, and areas pending weather damage.

Drives, positions, and operates firefighting and rescue vehicles and watercraft independently and under direction.

Conducts basic phases of rescues from heights, building collapse, confined space entry, swift water, trenches/cave-in, ice/cold water, and extrication of injured persons from machinery, motor vehicles, and heavy equipment.

Performs basic and advanced emergency medical care for both the sick and injured; records personal and medical information of patients.

Completes digital media and medical-legal documentation of every patient care contact under the auspices of a state law requiring completion within twenty-four hours of event.

Provides direct supervision of Firefighter/EMTs while mitigating every medical emergency as the primary caregiver; directs all staff on scene toward the common goal of immediate stabilization and transport of the patient.

Determines and documents the medical necessity of emergency medical care for each patient under the federal Medicare and Medicaid requirements.

Explains to and documents for each patient the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Develops, operates within, and reports findings on emergency medical pilot programs, including treatment modalities and equipment trials.

Operates a variety of general office equipment and communication equipment.

Ensures the continual access to fire hydrants year round, including removing ice and snow.

Maintains station, grounds, and equipment/apparatus; cleans and disinfects medical and rescue equipment; restocks supplies.

Completes requisitions, reports, repair orders, and maintenance checklists as required.

May serve as a member of a specialized team.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
