What is an Art Specialist:
Extended Day Activity Instructors - Performing Arts Specialists are responsible for leading after school programming for children and teens at New York Edge after-school program sites. The activity instructor will teach or co-lead activities in one of the following areas: performing arts, visual art, media art etc. They will foster self-expression, creativity, and artistic skill development in a supportive and engaging environment. Additionally, they will guide students in exploring different art techniques while ensuring an inclusive and inspiring space for all participants.
What will you do:
- Build strong relationships with and among students
- Teach or co-lead daily activities with clear objectives for lessons, projects
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests
- Support the coordination of program events
- Input data and prepare reports
- Administer pre and post-assessments and evaluations for student activities
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- College credits and/or degrees are highly preferred
- Physical requirements include the ability to climb stairs, lift children, and monitor events.
- Experience working with children strongly preferred
- On Site
Schedule:
Part-Time
Monday- Friday (2:30 pm - 5:30 pm)
Pay : $20-25/hour (based on experience and credentials)

**HUM 1: Modern Humanities: Arts and ideas (3 credit, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
Course explores literature, drama, art, and music in today's world. Attempts are made to place 20th century developments into a historicl context and illustrate the continuity of culture. This class is in addtion to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day. Teacher's are expected to attend professional development meetings, assessment of instruction and related events.
**MCF 40: Film: The Creative Medium** **(3 credit, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
To recognize the film medium as a creative art, students are introduced to the key elements of cinematic form: narrative, mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, sound, and acting. Key concepts are illustrated through the viewing and analysis of select short and feature-length films. This class is in addition to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day. Teacher's are expected to attend professional development meetings, assessment of instruction and related events.
**MCM 30: Mass Media** **(3 credit, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
Analysis of mass media to discover the way information is perceived and influences behavior. Extensive use is made of film and video resources to examine the message systems employed by individuals, groups, institutions and politics. Focus is on books, news, radio, film, television, advertising and social media. This class is in addtion to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day. Teacher's are expected to attend professional development meetings, assessment of instruction and related events.
**THA 50: Foundations of Theatre Arts** **(3 credit, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
This survey course is designedsf to provide students with a thorough understanding and greater appreciation of the theatrical form. Readings and lectures will focus on the relationship between theatrical theory and practice, the various creative/production roles essential to theatre, as well as major artists and movements throughout theatrical history. Students will analyze major works of dramatic literature to offer context for course content, as well as attend a live theatrical performance on campus. This class is in addtion to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day. Teacher's are expected to attend professional development meetings, assessment of instruction and related events.
**QUALIFICATIONS**

A baccalaureate or graduate degree (master's degree preferred) in Humanities (Art, English, History, Literature, Music, Speech and Theatre, etc.) A minimum of three years teaching experience is preferred.

Function of Position:
To give students experience in all aspects of what it takes to run an art gallery, from deciding on an artist, to how the works will best be displayed to capture the artists vision to packing up the show. Also to be stewards of the exhibits to make sure nothing is damaged in anyway, as well as learning about the current artist(s) to answer questions gallery visitors might have.
This is a Federal Work Study position. Eligible applicants MUST have received prior approval from the Financial Aid Office. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please contact Financial Aid before applying.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
Assist with the set up and performance of campus events. Assist with the installation and de-installation of artwork. To welcome visitors to the gallery (open to the public). Answer phones. Light cleaning and clerical work. To help maintain the gallery as a clean and safe facility. Students will learn how to install various types of artworks, while assisting in the installation and deinstallation of exhibits both in and Gallery and around campus. They will learn how to prep the site for the next exhibit, such as fill holes and paint. They will also assist the Gallery Director with the layout of the shows to create a setting that best displays artists' works, as well as document and label artworks as well.
