**Position Purpose:**
The Data Science Manager is responsible for leading a team of data scientists (individual contributors), ensuring that their efforts drive business profitability, increased efficiencies and improved customer experience. This role leads overall programs, maximizing resources, partnering with project teams and business partners, and supports problem solving efforts. Data Science Managers provide leadership, mentoring, and coaching to team members, along with supporting their development of business and technical skills.
This team works with forecasting possible outcomes of price and promotion actions at different levels, including AI solutions, and would need to be Proficient in deep learning and forecasting techniques.
As a Data Science Manager, you will provide executive summaries to all levels of the organization and leverage your business knowledge and network to identify opportunities to leverage data science solutions. This role is expected to collaborate with other Data Science Managers across the organization for aligning strategies and effectively managing talent. These responsibilities require effective communication skills, building relationships and partnerships, and leveraging business proficiency to solutions and recommendations.
**Key Responsibilities:**
+ 40% People Management & Team Leadership - Provide leadership, mentorship and coaching to Data Scientists (individual contributors) and evaluate performance, execution, and contribution; Attract, retain and develop top talent to build an effective and high performing team; Support team in development of business knowledge and technical skills with clear plans and regular assessment of progress; Ensure appropriate processes and job-specific requirements are properly documented; Develop onboarding and training plan for both technical and soft skills that will ensure high level of capabilities within the team; Manage resources effectively to align with strategic initiatives and business needs; Foster collaboration with team members to develop a supportive and engaged team; Support team in the design and development of algorithms and models to use against large datasets to create business insights; Drive team's results and celebrate accomplishments
+ 25% Project Management - Prioritize and assign projects by striking a balance between a variety of factors, like funding, return on investment, innovative or challenging work, among others; Manage programs for the team to ensure consistency of execution, balance of resources and quality solutions; Collaborate with program managers and business partners to align on objectives and expectations and ensure project teams deliver against them; Serve as escalation point for any issues or difficulties with specific projects; Provide executive updates to leaders at all levels of the organization on program effectiveness, team accomplishments, summary of findings and recommended solution, and explain internal and external impacts
+ 20% Technical Exploration & Development - Seek further knowledge on key developments within data science, technical skill sets, and additional data sources; Participate in the continuous improvement of data science and analytics by developing replicable solutions (for example, codified data products, project documentation, process flowcharts) to ensure solutions are leveraged for future projects; Ensure best practices and vision for data analysis and model productionization are leveraged
+ 15% Strategy & Business Development - Leverage extensive business knowledge and relationships to seek out new business opportunities to leverage data science and advocate for team's skills; Effectively develop trust and collaboration with internal customers and cross-functional teams; Ensure alignment with IT support model, collaboration, tools and governance to enable data scientists to be most effective in executing their roles; Collaborate with other data science managers across the organization to establish high level strategy and optimize talent management

**Travel Requirements:**
+ Typically requires overnight travel 5% to 20% of the time.
**Physical Requirements:**

The newly-created Data Science Platform (DSP) supports and advances the research objectives of Rockefeller Universitys faculty and staff by providing training and consultative support in the field of data science especially in the areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML/AI) and deep learning (DL).
Overview
Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, and working primarily with Faculty, Research Staff, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Graduate Students, the Director leads a team of seven (7) Machine Learning Engineers that identify and work closely with internal and external resources to determine how to most effectively support University researchers' needs for applying ML/AI and/or other quantitative approaches to new and existing data sets across a wide variety of disciplines, including structural biology, imaging, microscopy, "omics," neuroscience, immunology/virology, and the physical sciences. The position also includes leadership of the Fisher Center AI Platform, which seeks to apply AI/ML techniques to understand the causes of Alzheimer's disease, improve the care of people living with it, and find a cure.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
+ Consult on experimental design and best usage, with emphasis on best practices for proper analysis and reproducibility;
+ Recruit and manage Data Science Platform staff members;
+ Develop and lead training/classes in ML/AI fundamentals and techniques; adapt and evolve training to best serve the changing needs of the research community;
+ Identify, improve, and/or create appropriate training data sets for ML/AI projects;
+ Advise researchers and collaborators on method selection and implementation, as well as on how to direct research projects to ensure alignment with emerging advancements in deep learning;
+ Maintain awareness of advances in the field and their applicability to problems of interest to members of Rockefeller's research community;
+ Identify and apply for appropriate grant funding opportunities;
+ Additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Ph.D. or equivalent degree in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics or a related field.
+ A minimum of ten (10) years of research experience in identifying, formulating and solving biological problems through the application of advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
+ At least two (2) years of leadership experience.
+ A strong publication record in top-tier venues focused on machine learning, artificial intelligence or their domain-specific applications, such as AAAI, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, IJCAI, KDD, ICCV, ECCV, CVPR, EMNLP, ACL, MICCAI, IJCV, TPAMI, TIP, ACM-MM, Nature, Nature Methods, Science and equivalent conferences and journals.
+ Broad knowledge on recent advances in artificial intelligence, such as foundation models (including large-language models, vision-language models, genomic foundation models, etc.), generative models, self-supervised learning, large-scale distributed training, efficient deep learning, with research expertise in at least one relevant field.
+ Basic knowledge of the deep learning tool stack, such as PyTorch, Python, CUDA, Linux, and computing cluster management.
+ Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

+ Prior work experience in a research related, academic environment is a plus.

The Hartford is seeking an Assistant Vice President (AVP), Data Science to lead the Generative AI (GenAI) Data Science teams within the Personal Insurance organization. This pivotal leadership role will be responsible for driving our Customer Centric strategy, with the two major focus areas being Price to Risk and Customer Experience. The AVP will oversee the development and execution of advanced analytics and AI capabilities that enhance pricing accuracy, feature development, operational efficiencies, and customer experience across the Personal Insurance lifecycle.
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work schedule. Candidates who live near one of our PI HUB office locations (Hartford, CT. San Antonio, TX. Scottsdale, AZ. Charlotte, NC. Tampa, FL. Columbus, OH.) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. Key Responsibilities:
+ Lead 11 FTEs in the GenAI Data Science teams focused on Price to Risk and Customer Experience within Personal Insurance.
+ Develop and execute a research agenda to embed AI and automation into pricing, underwriting, and customer interaction processes.
+ Manage the development and enhancement of pricing and operational models, integrated into the scaled agile framework of the Personal Insurance business unit.
+ Serve as a member of the Personal Insurance extended Data and Analytics leadership team and provide thought leadership across data science and business domains.
+ Lead the development of Agentic AI and LLM-based solutions to optimize business processes and enhance decision-making transparency.
+ Hire, train, and develop a high-performing team, including budget and resource management.
+ Identify and integrate new data sources and AI tools to improve business outcomes and customer satisfaction.
+ Collaborate with technology, data, and business partners to embed AI capabilities into end-user technology and business processes.

Required Experience:

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
