Room to Read volunteers make it possible for young people all over the world to gain skills that enable them to become changemakers and create pathways to solve tough problems in novel ways.
Room to Read volunteers can do something no one else can: build a movement.
As a volunteer, your goal will be to engage your community on behalf of all children who face deep gender and educational inequities. You'll do that by raising awareness and funds. Our goal is to make that as easy as possible for you.
There are countless ways to engage your community and build support for global education. Your goal will be to encourage your community to GIVE to Room to Read, SHARE Room to Read’s mission or sign up to VOLUNTEER alongside you.

Description
The Health Education Assistant assists with clerical duties and patient education duties as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs assigned clerical duties in the clinic
- Monitors the Blood Pressure Desk
- Coordinates a wide range of health education services, including recruiting members, establishing referral system, providing scheduling and logistical support to promote the well-being of patients and the community
- Assists in distributing written Health Education materials
- May be required to work sometimes at satellite NEMS sites and/or at weekend events
- Provides assistance in the educating clients on the scope of services available at NEMS
- Participates in community outreach programs as needed
- Provides group class or one-on-one health education services to members and the general public
- Counsels patients on a variety of subjects such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, smoking cessation, substance abuse, teen health, Hepatitis B, preventive cancer screening and immunization, etc.
- Serves as a resource to patients and provides them with the best information available
- Collects, tabulates, and analyzes program data, and prepares monthly services reports
- Provides phone call services and schedules appointments for patients for the events and services such as classes and support groups
- Performs other job duties as required by manager/supervisor
- Minimum high school degree or equivalent
- Two years of work experience in a health clinic or a health care facility preferred
- Ability to operate a digital blood pressure monitor preferred
- Must be able to work sometimes at satellite NEMS sites and/or at weekend events
- Ability to perform clerical duties efficiently and in a timely manner
- Ability to present ideas accurately, concisely, and effectively both orally and in writing; assists in the promotion of public health education programs
- Ability to work with a computer on Microsoft Office and Outlook
- Current documentation of Basic Life Support is required
- Fluent in Chinese, both oral and written (Cantonese &/or Mandarin)
- Must be able to read and write English fluently
- This is a FLSA Non-exempt position.
- This is not an OSHA high-risk position.

Required Qualifications/Experience:
- 48 Credits or higher,or an associates degree or higher
- Experience working with children with special educational needs
- Experience working with personal care
- Passion for working within special education
- U.S. work authorization (Zen Educate cannot provide sponsorship for an employment visa or relocation assistance at this time)
- Applicants must be professionally proficient in English
- CPR and First Aid (certification will be provided for otherwise qualified candidates)
Physical Requirements:
- Comfortable being on your feet and moving around the classroom throughout the day
- Able to lift up to 20 lbs and safely assist students when needed (kneeling, bending, quick response)
- Additional physical requirements may be requested during your application process
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in special education
- Behavioral Technician or PCA experience
- Crisis prevention (CPI) training
Salary
Pay: $24 - $28 per hour, paid weekly.
Schedule: Monday to Friday, within hours of 7:30 am - 3:00/4:30 pm (no weekend work).
