Job Goal: The Transportation Special Education Routing Specialist supports the Supervisor of Transportation in the safe, timely, and equitable transport of all students. This role is responsible for coordinating daily transportation operations, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal transportation regulations, assisting with staff supervision and development, and resolving issues involving students, parents, drivers, and district
personnel. This role has a heavy focus on McKinney-Vento and Special Education Support.
Job Qualifications:
- Associate's degree or 60+ college credit hours in Business or related field.
- Valid Delaware driver's license with a clean driving record for the past five years.
- Eligible for or holder of a Class B CDL with school bus endorsement
- Demonstrated experience in transportation-related scheduling and safety compliance.
- Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills.
- Experience in student support services or crisis management is preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of Special Education services and McKinney Vento, including knowledge of IEPs, transportation accommodations, and legal compliance under IDEA and ADA preferred.
- Experience working with diverse student populations, families in crisis, and community agencies.
- Extensive understanding of student behavior supports, trauma-informed practices, and de-escalation techniques relevant to transportation contexts preferred.
- Familiarity with community resources and ability to leverage partnerships to support students and families.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to document services, communicate with families, and present to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and transportation software platforms.
Essential Functions:
Special Education and McKinney-Vento Student Support
- Coordinate transportation services for students with disabilities in accordance with IEP (Individualized Education Program) requirements, including specialized equipment or accommodations.
- Collaborate with special education case managers, school staff, and families to ensure safe and appropriate transportation plans are in place for students with behavioral, medical, or mobility needs.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations related to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) as they pertain to school transportation.
- Oversee the assignment and training of drivers and attendants working with students requiring specialized services, including training in de-escalation, medical protocols, and use of safety equipment (e.g., harnesses, wheelchair restraints).
- Monitor and update seating assignments, pickup/drop-off protocols, and staff communications for routes serving students with special needs to ensure consistency and safety.
- Coordinate timely and equitable transportation for students identified under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, including students living in shelters, temporary housing, or outside of school boundaries.
- Liaise with the district McKinney-Vento liaison and building administrators to address emergent transportation needs and ensure minimal disruption to educational access for displaced students.
- Maintain confidential records and documentation related to student transportation accommodations and support services.
- Participate in IEP meetings or case conferences when transportation is a related service, providing expertise and updates on operational feasibility and service planning.
- Ensure all drivers and attendants transporting McKinney-Vento or special education students understand legal obligations, safety expectations, and proper communication channels.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor to support the operational needs of the department.

Additional Duties
- Assist with route bidding, staffing rotations, and field trip assignments.
- Participate in weather-related decisions and emergency response planning.

- Coordinates and maintains the van fleet for safe and timely transportation of students.
- Perform all duties as they relate to billing, compliance, maintenance, and scheduling as they relate to Special Education and McKinney-Vento.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, use hands to the finger(s), handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, use fingers to type and/or write; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, and color vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds. If lifting in excess of this weight is necessary, the assistance of a second person is required. Must remain alert and able to respond to emergency situations while on duty. Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and reaching; occasional climbing or balancing. The physical demands of this position will also include the ability of the individual to perform all of the essential functions and related responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
