Principal Associate, Financial Analysis

The Card Services Finance team, within Card Finance, is seeking a Principal Financial Analyst to deliver almost always-on transparency into Card Tech and Product capacity, and its value generation, to help the Card Business and Finance with dynamic planning and vigilant prioritization. With product leaders now distributed throughout the Enterprise and an ever growing list of imperatives and tech modernization delivered by Card, it is more critical than ever to have dedicated support for this part of our business. This role includes data analysis and strategic partnership with the business and our tech partners, where storytelling on top of a deep understanding of the complex revenue and cost components of the Card P&L will be needed. The ideal candidate is someone who is analytically curious, thrives in relationship building, enjoys white space and is excited to stand-up a process that does not exist today. This role will also support the headcount and discretionary budget for our Card Chief of Staff and Card Association Management teams.

As a Principal Financial Analyst, you will work for a company that invests in ways to tell stories, view trends, and diagnose results in a more compelling and visual nature. You will have the opportunity to partner with business and tech customers on driving strategic business direction that leads to sustainable performance, and you will be asked to challenge our current well-managed processes to be more proactive, effective and efficient.

Principal Financial Analysts perform financial data analysis in preparing Profit & Loss or other statements and frequently build reports for higher level associates. They provide management and business clients with project statuses as well as perform reporting and analysis to support presentations and ad-hoc requests.

The role requires strong analytical, communication, problem solving, strategic thinking, and influencing skills in order to effectively:

  • Conduct analysis and articulate outcomes and relevant insights

  • Develop presentations to senior audiences to communicate insights and to influence business and financial outcomes

  • Partner with business teams to assess the financial implications of ongoing and proposed efforts to optimize business performance

  • Foster trusted business partnerships

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams

Responsibilities:

  • Financial reporting and analysis, including budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, financial reporting, and Profit & Loss (P&L) management

  • Coordinate and collect input data from Financial Analysts in different departments, check data integrity, summarize and convert data, run models, verify, analyze, and communicate output data

  • Assist in development of business presentations to communicate analysis results to senior audiences; clearly articulate outcomes of analysis to leadership teams

  • Independently manage and prioritize workload

  • Address and deliver on ad-hoc requests and special projects, often in an ambiguous environment

  • Demonstrate a passion to learn and continuously develop FP&A and technical skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or military experience

  • At least 4 years of experience in financial analysis

  • At least 4 years of experience with financial modeling

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) Accounting, Finance, or Economics

  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) license or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license

  • At least 5 years of experience in financial analysis

  • At least 5 years of experience with financial modeling

  • At least 4 years of experience in strategic analysis and planning

  • Experience in Microsoft Excel and G Suite

  • Demonstrated independent problem solving and strategic thinking abilities

  • Strong teamwork skills; ability to positively contribute to overall success of the team

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $117,300 - $33,900 for Principal Financial Analyst


Richmond, VA: 106,700 - 121,700 for Principal Financial Analyst










Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
