Overview

Support our government customers with artificial and machine learning project planning and execution for automated combat casualty care and clinical decision support. The candidate will analyze functional requirements from an engineering perspective and apply automated reasoning techniques to allow a computer system to draw conclusions from knowledge represented in a machine-interpretable form.

Responsibilities
  • Perform as a Principal Investigator for medical research.
  • Work with a team to design computer software that performs knowledge representation and machine-interpretable reasoning.
  • Work with knowledge bases to develop database schemas and to store computational models.
  • Performs market research into the integration of machine learning engineering with autonomous devices (robotics) for integration into military medical battlefield systems.
  • Research and prototype combat casualty care solutions in the multi-domain battlefield.
  • The ability to work with a diverse group of software developers, nurses, and combat medics working in geographically different locations.
  • The ability to understand how different systems or portions of systems can work together and share data, implement and design the architecture of the project, and when necessary, clearly document ideas and plans.
  • The ability to present information to audiences from varying backgrounds using verbal and written means.
  • Consult as a subject matter expert on other related research efforts within the organization that require artificial and machine learning expertise.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree (Computer Science or related field)
  • Secret Clearance or the ability to obtain
  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in knowledge representation and ontologies, AI/ML programming, and computer science.
  • Demonstrated success in design, development, and implementation of AI/machine learning capabilities, preferably in the emergency medicine domain.
  • Experience with any of the following:
    • AI/ML Frameworks - HuggingFace, PyTorch/TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, Pandas, NumPy, Prophet
    • Data & Cloud Platforms - AWS, GCP, Azure, Palantir Foundry, SQL, NoSQL
    • ML Ops - Docker, Kubernetes, Git/Github, JIRA, Postman, CUDA
  • Experience with medical or technology research is preferred
  • Experience with clinical decision support systems preferred

Basic Compensation: $130,000 - $135,000 yearly salary

The salary range listed reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of posting. The final offer may vary based on skills, experience, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity.   • Strong understanding of evaluation of ML models, grounded in statistics and measurement/decision science. Precision, NPV, Recall/Sensitivity, Specificity, the tradeoffs between them, and their applicability to various prediction scenarios.
  • Strong experience fine-tuning LLMs and multi-modal models using supervised and reinforcement learning. Skilled in both third-party API/SDK-based fine-tuning and custom training on cloud-based compute clusters for application-specific tasks. Experience optimizing GPU usage for model training and inference is a big plus.
  • Experience designing reward functions or graders for Reinforcement Fine-Tuning, especially with LLMs.
  • Experience building AI agents using agentic frameworks like LangGraph or AutoGen, and ability to create end-to-end agentic AI applications from scratch. Familiarity with the latest agentic tools, frameworks, and standards (e.g., MCP, A2A). Experience designing and implementing self-improving AI agents is a big plus.
  • Have experience building and maintaining reliable, secure and scalable software solutions using modern cloud-based paradigms including CI/CD, DRI, and on-call practices.
  • Most important: Is a quick and self-driven learner who knows how to proactively seek help, iterate and evolve in a changing product landscape.
Key Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience building production ML engineering systems in a team setting.
  • 1+ years of experience working on modern cloud-native platforms and languages (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Familiarity with crafting modular APIs and building engaging and intuitive web experiences, especially agentic AI protocols such as MCP and A2A.
  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven track record of publishing in leading AI conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL).

We are looking for talented Machine Learning Engineers to join Prescient Design, a division devoted to developing structural and machine learning based methods for molecular design within Genentech's Research and Early Development (gRED) organization. The successful candidate will manage projects deploying new techniques for machine learning based molecular optimization for the analysis and design of small and large molecule drugs within target-driven design campaigns. Special focus will be given to engineering pipelines for probabilistic molecular property prediction and Bayesian acquisition for active learning based drug discovery. Additional activities may extend to include engineering pipelines for molecular generative modeling.

The Role:

You will join Prescient Design within the Computational Sciences organization in gRED. Your peers will be machine learning scientists, engineers, computational chemists, and computational biologists.
You will closely collaborate with scientists within Prescient and across gRED.
You will develop machine learning and Bayesian optimization workflows to analyze existing, and design new, small and large molecules.
You will be expected to form close working relationships with small molecule and protein therapeutic development efforts across the gRED organization.
You will be expected to work on existing projects and generate new project ideas.

Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computational Biology, Physics), or MS degree and 3+ years of industry experience.

  • Experience with one or more of the following: React, Redux, ES6, JavaScript, CSS, HTML5, RESTful API, Node.js, Java, GraphQL, web technologies.
  • Experience with database technologies such as Amazon DynamoDB, MongoDB, SQL, etc.
  • Experience with AWS, or other Content Delivery Network (CDN).
  • Experience in understanding large and sophisticated code bases, including API design techniques to help keep them clean and maintainable.


Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The U.S. pay range for this position is $120,700 -- $228,600 annually. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
