**Job Summary and Qualifications**
**As a Medical Assistant, you will:**
+ Prepare patients for examination and treatment by taking patient histories and vital signs
+ Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments for your patients including preparation and maintenance of supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization
+ Give injections, and assist with lab testing and phlebotomy needs
+ Assist physicians in applying splints, dressings, and bandages
+ Assist with transfers and scheduling of follow-up care
+ Coordinate patient physicals and work place injuries for partner accounts
+ Screen incoming calls for referral to physicians and practitioners
**You Should Have:**
+ 1+ year of experience in a clinical patient setting is preferred
+ Experience using an EHR system is very helpful
+ Graduate of an accredited school of Medical Assisting or completion of an approved program (BOTP) is required
+ Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) is helpful
+ The ability to obtain a Federal Breath Alcohol Screening Certificate and Federal Drug Screening Certification within 30 days of start preferred

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Measures and records patient vital signs; records patient interview and medical history.
+ Catalogs and communicates patient needs to the PCP, Clinician, Specialist and/or other clinical personnel.
+ Prepares patients for examinations and performs routine screening tests; assists physician with exams; explains treatment procedures and physicians' instructions to patient.
+ Observes patients and reports any changes in patient conditions to the PCP, Clinician, Specialist and/or other clinical personnel.
+ Perform non-critical medical and therapeutic procedures based on medical instructions. Collects phlebotomy and other lab specimens; performs basic waived lab tests.

+ Upon physician approval and authorization, calls in prescriptions to the pharmacy. + Provides health coaching to a defined group of patients to support healthy lifestyle choices. Follows up with coached patients via weekly calls.

At Houston Methodist, the Medical Assistant Certified (MA) position is responsible for assisting in the examination and treatment of patients under the direct supervision of the clinical or administrative leadership. This position is responsible for assisting providers in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas. The MA position assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes.   • Contributes towards improving department scores for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients. Assists with maintaining equipment and supplies.
  • Reports observations, conditions and problems of patients to the physician or nurse to achieve desired patient outcomes. Provides for the privacy of patients and families, keeping the safety of the patient in mind.

  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Knowledge of medical practice and care of patients and ability to assist with examinations, diagnostic and treatment procedures, knowledge of medical equipment and instruments
  • Skill in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance to maintain accurate medical records
  • Demonstrate a learning attitude toward solving problems, using good reasoning and judgment
  • Provide safe patient-centered, compassionate and competent care
  • Proficient in computer skills for documentation and work-related purposes
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department-specific requirements. Maintain current certifications
