**GENERAL DUTIES**
- Under supervision, performs miscellaneous clerical, administrative, research or other work related to the operation of a College or other unit where such work is required on a part-time basis or for a period of limited duration.

Responsibilities

+ Ensures the accurate processing of insurance claims to resolve customer issues and prevent payment rejections. Follows- up with insurance companies as well as medical providers and participates in 3rd party audit.

**HE 1400 - Critical Issues in Personal Health (3 credit, 3 hour level course to junior and/or senior students enrolled in College Now Program)**
Critical health issues from chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus, to communicable diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted infections. Students analyze the role of health risk behaviors in the development of disease, injury and disability, and design a personal wellness plan for health promotion.
**HS 5200 - Human Sexuality** **(3 credit, 3 hour level course to junior and/or senior students enrolled in College Now Program)**
Information on the biological basis os sex, sexual behavior, attitudes and values, sexual problems, sex therapy, and the social, cultural and ethics aspects of sexuality. Teacher's are expected to attend professional development meetings, assessment of instruction and related events.

Summary
The Education Specialist’s primary concern is the improvement of learning opportunities for students attending the New York Edge After School Program. The Educational Specialist is an on-site instructional leader who collaborates closely with the Education Department and the Site Director to support front-line staff (Academic Enrichment Coaches and Activity Specialists) in delivering skill-based curricula and thematic projects. The Education Specialist’s role is to support program instructional/enrichment goals by ensuring activities are structured, age-appropriate, and aligned to school-day instructional practices and model effective classroom management (as needed). The education specialist has the role of coach and consultant in advising the site director, teachers, academic enrichment coaches, and activity specialists who work within the after-school program.

SCHEDULE:


  • 9-15 hours per week

  • Monday - Friday 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Essential Job Functions:

  • Ensures classroom instruction aligns with New York Edge quality standards during academic and enrichment activities

  • Provides oversight of curricula implementation to support school-day instruction.

  • Observe and provide feedback to activity specialists, teachers, and group leaders daily, providing advice and modeling lessons as needed. Maintains an observation/feedback log documenting the help provided.

  • Ensures activity lesson plans and projects are age-appropriate and have clear learning objectives.

  • Assesses the effectiveness and success of the approved curriculum and recommends changes based on student work.

  • Documents student progress and projects through multimedia, e.g., photos from cellular phone

  • Coordinates the administration and implementation of academic assessment systems

  • Submits a summary report of student achievements at the end of each cycle to the Principal, the Site Director, and the Education Department.

  • Provides at least six hours of on-site professional development based on the needs of the activity specialists and tutors.

  • Attends bi-monthly workshops.

  • Serves as an instructional coach and mentor for front-line staff

  • Plans and implements staff development as it relates to instructional strategies and classroom management

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualities we’re looking for:

  • Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of current educational trends in curriculum and instruction

  • Understanding and experience of education in an urban setting

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, and school partners, including school administration and staff

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills

Requirements:

  • Provide feedback from the observations to activity specialists at least once daily when they are in the role of the educational specialist.

  • Provide the appropriate paperwork weekly to the director of education

  • Assess professional development to activity specialists and line staff at the site at least monthly by individual, small group, or whole group.

  • Review, provide feedback, and approve lesson plans weekly.

  • Report to the director of education regarding the quality of educational service.

Qualifications:

  • DOE Teacher Certification required

  • Bachelor's Degree In Education Required

  • Advanced degree in Education preferred

  • Minimum of three years classroom experience in an urban setting

  • Proven track record of success in the classroom

  • Experience working with students with differentiated learning styles.

  • Experience supervising school staff is a plus.

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Education Specialist ensures that RTS youth development principles are reflected in the learning environment and programming. This role supports high-quality instruction across multiple sites by guiding curriculum alignment, modeling best practices, supporting lesson planning and classroom management, and fostering stronger connections between afterschool programming and the school day. The Education Specialist reports directly to the Program Director and works closely with Group Leaders, Activity Specialists, Master Education Specialist, and the leadership team to continuously improve the educational quality of program delivery. 

ORGANIZATIONAL ROLE:

Supervises: Academic Components and Educational Quality of Afterschool Programming 
Schedule: Part-Time, 27.5 hours/week 
Hours: Monday–Friday, 12:30 PM – 6:00 PM across 3–4 program sites 
Compensation: $30 – $32 per hour (based on experience and credentials) 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Instructional Leadership and Program Alignment 

  • Ensure all structured activities are enriching, developmentally appropriate, and connected to school-day learning experiences. 

  • Review and refine lesson plans weekly to ensure clear objectives, youth engagement strategies, and skill-building outcomes. 

  • Observe classroom activities and coach instructional staff through modeling, feedback, and planning support. 

  • Foster alignment between afterschool programming and school-day expectations through regular communication with school staff and administrators. 

  • Collaborate with the Master Education Specialist to implement instructional priorities and curriculum design across sites. 

  • Staff Support and Professional Development 

  • Facilitate at least six hours of on-site professional development annually based on staff needs and program goals. 

  • Collaborate with Program Directors to identify and onboard instructional staff with strong educational skills. 

  • Maintain observation logs and provide regular coaching sessions and real-time feedback to frontline staff. 

  • Support staff in effective lesson delivery, classroom setup, and behavior management strategies. 

  • Curriculum Development and Enrichment 

  • Collaborate with the Master Education Specialist to create and revise curriculum across subject areas including literacy, arts, STEM, SEL, and enrichment. 

  • Participate in ongoing curriculum planning sessions led by the Master Education Specialist to ensure instructional consistency and innovation. 

  • Design and adapt academic enrichment curricula that are engaging, culturally responsive, and aligned with youth interests and developmental needs. 

  • Create and distribute planning tools and curriculum binders that support consistency and quality across all sites. 

  • Provide differentiated instructional support for youth with learning or behavioral needs. 

  • Data and Continuous Quality Improvement 

  • Document student growth through informal assessments, pre/post surveys, work samples, and project reflections. 

  • Submit end-of-cycle summaries on instructional quality and student achievement to Program Directors and the Master Education Specialist. 

  • Use data and coaching insights to inform program adjustments and staff training focus areas. 

  • Ensure instructional activities meet compliance expectations from DYCD, OCFS, and DOE. 
     

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Child Development, or a related field required; Master’s Degree or NYS Teacher Certification preferred. 

  • Minimum three years of classroom experience, ideally in K–8 urban school settings. 

  • Experience designing and delivering engaging educational activities in formal or informal learning settings. 

  • Experience developing staff capacity through coaching, training, or professional development. 

  • Excellent communication, classroom management, and interpersonal skills. 

  • Familiarity with DYCD systems and expectations a plus. 

  • Proficient with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, and online tools such as Zoom or Google Classroom. 
     

WORKING CONDITIONS   

  • The position is based in New York City and requires travel to multiple program sites. 

  • Must be comfortable working in DOE school buildings and community-based locations.

JOB SUMMARY: As part of the Youth Services Department’s vision: all Youth Services Staff will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all young people at all of the Grand Street Settlement’s sites. The Education Specialists will promote and develop a safe and engaging learning environment for youth. Homework help, small group tutoring or individualized tutoring, creating literacy and STEM lessons, as well as supervising group leaders’ facilitation of lessons is included as part of the Education Specialist’s scope of work.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in Education or related fields, preferred.
  • Must have experience teaching and designing curricula.
  • Prior experience supervising staff required.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience and expertise working with youth (volunteer experience is acceptable).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee tutoring component of the program and supervise academic tutors.
  • Assess students academic progress: collecting report cards and entering report grids, communicating to parents, teachers, and school administration.
  • Create and develop individual educational plans.
  • Oversee group leader’s facilitation of lesson plans.
  • Conduct observations of lessons and meet with group leaders to discuss strategies.
  • Coordinate and facilitate academic activities such as games and events.
  • Prepare reports as required.
  • Problem solve and intervene directly with youth.
  • Perform special projects as assigned from time-to-time.
  • Engage children and young adults into conversation to determine their needs and interests.
  • Plan and facilitate all program activities to meet the individual needs of the participants.
  • Conduct staff training to ensure that all personnel are on the same page regarding achievement of program objectives.
  • Coordinate community relations campaigns to promote youth programs.
  • Provide literacy intervention materials and resources to members of educational programs.
  • Provide job preparation services individually and through workshops including training in resume building, dressing for success, and interview preparation.
  • Provide support for staff that are running other youth development or support service programs.
  • Develop and coordinate youth development programs as defined through grant contracts and community needs.
  • Coordinate annual workshop series for college applications and topics including financial aid, scholarships, and personal statement writing.
  • Evaluate programs to ensure that they meet the needs of the youth and are effective in producing their intended outcomes.

Summary
The Education Specialist’s primary concern is the improvement of learning opportunities for students attending the New York Edge After School Program. The Educational Specialist is an on-site instructional leader who collaborates closely with the Education Department and the Site Director to support front-line staff (Academic Enrichment Coaches and Activity Specialists) in delivering skill-based curricula and thematic projects. The Education Specialist’s role is to support program instructional/enrichment goals by ensuring activities are structured, age-appropriate, and aligned to school-day instructional practices and model effective classroom management (as needed). The education specialist has the role of coach and consultant in advising the site director, teachers, academic enrichment coaches, and activity specialists who work within the after-school program.

SCHEDULE:


  • 9-15 hours per week

  • Monday - Friday 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Essential Job Functions:

  • Ensures classroom instruction aligns with New York Edge quality standards during academic and enrichment activities

  • Provides oversight of curricula implementation to support school-day instruction.

  • Observe and provide feedback to activity specialists, teachers, and group leaders daily, providing advice and modeling lessons as needed. Maintains an observation/feedback log documenting the help provided.

  • Ensures activity lesson plans and projects are age-appropriate and have clear learning objectives.

  • Assesses the effectiveness and success of the approved curriculum and recommends changes based on student work.

  • Documents student progress and projects through multimedia, e.g., photos from cellular phone

  • Coordinates the administration and implementation of academic assessment systems

  • Provides at least six hours of on-site professional development based on the needs of the activity specialists and tutors.

  • Attends bi-monthly workshops.

  • Serves as an instructional coach and mentor for front-line staff

  • Plans and implements staff development as it relates to instructional strategies and classroom management

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualities we’re looking for:

  • Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of current educational trends in curriculum and instruction

  • Understanding and experience of education in an urban setting

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, and school partners, including school administration and staff

  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills

Requirements:

  • Provide feedback from the observations to activity specialists at least once daily when they are in the role of the educational specialist.

  • Provide the appropriate paperwork weekly to the director of education

  • Assess professional development to activity specialists and line staff at the site at least monthly by individual, small group, or whole group.

  • Review, provide feedback, and approve lesson plans weekly.

  • Report to the director of education regarding the quality of educational service.

Qualifications:

  • DOE Teacher Certification required

  • Bachelor's Degree In Education Required

  • Advanced degree in Education preferred

  • Minimum of three years classroom experience in an urban setting

  • Proven track record of success in the classroom

  • Experience working with students with differentiated learning styles.

  • Experience supervising school staff is a plus.

  • May be required to walk up and down stairs.

Over the past years the Y’s Youth and Family Department has significantly expanded its programmatic offerings to include several government-funded programs, mainly through the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). As such, we are currently running two SONYC (Middle School) After School programs, a COMPASS HIGH (High School) After School, and Summer Youth Employment Programs (SYEP) for Younger Youth and Older Youth, all of which require an Education Specialist to support them. As we continue to expand, our commitment to educational excellence, alignment with school objectives, and clarity of programmatic outcomes remain the same. We are therefore looking to hire a Full Time Education Specialist to enhance the Y’s educational quality as a whole. While the focus of the position will be on our externally funded programs (mostly DYCD), the Educational Specialist will also interact with the directors of our other youth programs, namely: Youth Hub (funded by New York Presbyterian), Summer Day Camp, fee-for service After School program for Elementary-aged children, Jewish Life Department, Inclusion Programs, Literacy Programs, and others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
