Position Summary

Olivet Nazarene University seeks a full-time faculty member in the Department of Engineering to support a growing Chemical and Biochemical Engineering concentration. Responsibilities consist primarily of teaching core engineering courses and chemical and biochemical engineering courses. Appointment will also include laboratory development. The ideal candidate would support engineering missions and/or also contribute to environmental and sustainability initiatives in the program. Candidates should exhibit a commitment to undergraduate teaching, scholarship, the integration of Christian faith and engineering practice, and support of Olivet's mission. The Department of Engineering at Olivet Nazarene University seeks a full-time faculty beginning August 2024.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach core engineering and chemical/biochemical engineering concentration courses.
  2. University service, including advising and mentoring students, supervising senior design projects, advising student organizations such as AIChE, meeting with prospective students, and serving on University committees.
  3. Support of the program's continuous quality improvement, assessment, and ABET accreditation activities.
  4. Scholarly research, engineering education initiatives, consulting, grant writing, engineering mission projects, and presenting at technical conferences are encouraged.
  5. Appointment will include laboratory development to continue to integrate the Unit Operations Laboratory into the curriculum.
  6. The ideal candidate may also contribute to environmental and sustainability initiatives in the program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  1. A lifestyle in agreement with the ONU Statement of Mission, Faith, and Lifestyle Covenant.
  2. A passion for teaching and support of Olivet's mission are essential.
  3. Professional practice and/or industry experience are highly desirable.
  4. Should be able to articulate the integration of the Christian faith and engineering practice.

Additional Information

EDUCATION

Ph.D. in engineering with a specialty in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Candidates with the M.S. and significant industry experience will also be considered. PE licensure is desirable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Located on the main campus of Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.

Olivet offers the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) degree with concentrations in Architectural, Chemical and Biochemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Walker School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and is located in a facility that includes the Ken Johnson Engineering Technology Center. The Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET accredits the Engineering Program.

The Chemical and Fuel Cycle Technologies division at Argonne is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join a multidisciplinary team developing molten salt-based chemical and electrochemical processes geared towards applications including advanced nuclear systems, electrometallurgy, chemical production, and national security. Under the guidance of a supervisor, the postdoctoral appointee will develop fundamental understanding of reaction mechanisms in molten salts and apply insights to process development and scale up. Project activities will include the design and development of online monitoring tools (e.g., electrochemical and optical sensors) for molten salts, the development of innovative processes and technologies for recycling actinides to support sustainable fuel cycles, and the application of chemical and electrochemical principles to control and improve product morphology, product quality, and process efficiency at engineering scales.
With guidance, the appointee will:
+ Develop novel process monitoring and control technologies applicable to molten salt and liquid metal systems
+ Develop and test new materials and cell configurations for the production of salt and metal products.
+ Perform experiments with electroanalytical and optical measurements to advance the technical understanding and application of molten salt chemistry
+ Perform experiments to understand and quantify reaction pathways and kinetics for molten salt systems
+ Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and Laboratory management through status updates, technical research reports, project presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and other regular channels.
+ Develop technical ideas and proposals to advance the application of molten salts to chemical and electrochemical processes.
**Position Requirements**
+ This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field at the PhD degree level with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
+ To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
+ Skill in devising and performing experiments to acquire identified data, using and maintaining research equipment, compiling, evaluating, and reporting test results.
+ Knowledge of the principles and technologies associated with chemical and material processing.
+ Experience working safely with hazardous materials using engineering controls such as gloveboxes is desired.
+ Knowledge of the use of instrumentation and data acquisition systems to analyze and interpret experimental data.
+ Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

We are hiring a hands-on, detail-driven Research Engineer with a strong background in chemical engineering, polymer chemistry, or materials science. This role combines wet-lab experimentation, 3D CAD design, and prototyping—ideal for engineers who thrive at the intersection of science, technology, and global impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct lab-based research on polymer materials and sorbents for water harvesting

  • Design mechanical components using SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Onshape

  • Assist with prototype fabrication and testing (3D printing experience is a plus)

  • Maintain detailed lab records and project documentation

  • Track project deliverables using MS Project, Jira, Asana, or Monday.com

  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to solve design and performance challenges

Minimum Qualifications
